Club Sussed Erection Section

As discussed on ILM, the concept of the 'erection section' is RRRRRRRIPE for revival (the 20 minute or so burst of SLOWIES towards the end of a niteklub session when you COP OFF or rather don't). And where better to revive it than Oxford's pioneering indie-on-the-flyers-pop-on-the-decks Club Sussed?

The questions is: WHAT WOULD WE PLAY?

Tom, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Swans: "Cop"

mark s, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Cheree" - SUICIDE. (Getting *closer* on that tune actually happened to me 2 weeks ago, and I must say I loved the erec, erm, the experience).

Simon, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooooh.... 'Love To Love You, Baby' by Donna Summer. More orgasmotronic than erection section. Maybe that's just me...

Johnathan, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In the cheesy clubs of Norwich, the dancing belonged to the girls for nine tenths of the evening, while the boys would sit in inarticulate, lustful misery around the perimeter watching them sing to Abba. Two beats into Chris De Burgh, however, and the lads swang to their feet like animatronic mannequins and invaded the dance floor, moving at a rate of a girl every three seconds until one would have them.

So the tip from Norfolk is that Lady in Red is a guaranteed floor filler.

Otherwise, pretty much any version of Polkadots and Moonbeams by van Heusen & Burke.

Magnus, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will *always* associate this kind of thing with Blue Rodeo's Try and Tragically Hip's Long Time Running. Ahhh Kingston...

Kim, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't give a fuck about that nonsense. Just play Spacemen3 to end the set and I will go home a happy girl.

masonic boom, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Muscle of love" by Alice Cooper
"Sloop John B" (I feel so broke up, I wanna go home") by the Beach Boys
"Take On Me" by A Ha
"Look But You Can't Touch" by Poison

Of course, this song selection would probably raise a few eyebrows...but then I've never been to a nightclub.

james e l, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The answer is SLOW 80s. Start with the pop and then wind down into a smooth, suave COME HERE YOUNG MAIDEN, I will tempt with you reference to the hair of Limahl (MUST make a cocktail with that name, it shall be green) and then back to my silk sheeted boudoir.

I can't think of anything better than Lady In Red right now to be honest.

Although, to be a horrible indie kid, I reckon some Magnetic Fields slowies could work. Uh huh uh huh. And what the hell, slow moody ones. Oh dear. I'm having a flashback to a time with me, he, and a bit of Rox-ee.... music, that is. Do the Strand indeed!

sarah, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wasn't there a club in London called the Erection Section? I've got a feeling one of the St Etienne chaps was involved. Don't know if it's still going, but if they were playing a whole night of this stuff, I can't imagine it'd be terribly popular. After all, slow songs are for drunken swaying and attempted fumbling, aren't they? What would you do all sober and shy at the beginning of the night?

Three songs to end the night (in reverse order): Crazy For You by Madonna, The Power of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Drive by the Cars. Please, please, please not Chris de Burgh.

Madchen, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely the Human League cover of 'You've lost that loving feeling' would get any of today's young trendies all hot and bothered.

alex thomson, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh, ooh: 'Wrecking Ball' by Emmylou Harris (and why isn't there a club called The Wrecking Ball btw?)

stevie t, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Lady in Red", by whoever it was who perpetrated that horror, cross fading into "EE AAH OOOH" by Throbbing Gristle. The message being get off, and get the hell out, our cleaners have work to do!"

xoxo

Norman Fay, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Throbbing Gristle = rather appropriate for an erection section, no?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Know It's Over" by The Smiths, because odds are that lyric is going to resemble reality. (Of course, it does depend on the girl; I had several friends in high school who would molest anyone who knew the words to that song.)

You could also throw on "Adore" by Prince.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clearly this is NOT EVER GOING TO HAPPEN, so all discussion is purely hypothetical. Rumours that this stems from childhood memories of NEVER GETTING TO DANCE WITH GURLS at the end of the school disco are completely unfounded...

frankly it could only ever be "how soon is now" anyway...

oh and trews the reason there isn't a club called the wrecking ball is because you didn't suggest it three weeks ago innit ;P

carsmilesteve, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The 'Derry, a club in Portrush N.Ireland, used to end their pretty tacky friday night with some track unknown to me, the chorus going 'do the masturbation boogie', (female vocalist, anyone recognise it?). Piss-poor joke aimed at those still single at chucking-out time. Only time I can consciously recall 'copping off'to a song was The Source feat. Candy Staton 'You've got the Love'.

stevo, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As I said on ILM 'Careless Whisper' is THE erection section anthem. "Guilty feelings GOT no rhythem" Y'see? Clarrsic!

'True' by the Spandau's and the Godlike 'I'm Not in Love' by 10cc are the others. Nowt else - do NOT play 'Wonderful Tonight'. That's for Mums and Dads.

Ahhh, it takes me back... I can just imagine me and a girl called Tracy who works in Boots who's here with her mate, shuffling around in circles, getting sweaty palms on her polyester dress and trying to pick stray strands of her hair out of my mouth, weighing up if it's 'safe' to go in for the snog or not. And than she goes off to the bogs... and doesn't come back.

Bollocks to it. Another long walk home alone. Maybe next week. Maybe...

DavidM, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As I understand it Steve, Club Sussed is already Romeo Central! Give in to the power of LUV.

B & S have got plenty of slowies to get the fans hands wandering.

Tom, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Indeed they have, Tom, s'got 2B SLOW GRAFFITI!

Mark Hester, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gotta be "Slow Graffiti" B&S followed by "True" Spandau Ballet followed by "Orinoco Flow" Enya

MarkH, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"guilty *feet have* got no rhythm", shurely...

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes. I said "feelings" didn't I? Odd that. What-a mistake-a to make-a.

DavidM, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate slow songs at the end of a club. Most people have gone home do there's finally proper room to dance, and suddenly you're completely deflated by something that drones on and sends you off into the night on a downer. And it's no use giving me the 'good for trying to cop off' line. I never pulled before I had a girlfriend, and now that I do have one I don't need to. I WANT TO DANCE.

Ally C, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What if your girlfriend wants to slow dance with her boyfriend? Sniff.

Madchen, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Slow dancing is for wimps. Falling over and making a fool of yourself is the way to go.

Ally C, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hush, you, that's my job.

masonic boom, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

or Jonnie and disco Dave's at Strange Fruit on Saturday night. Ally you would have been soooo proud.

cabbage, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did they manage to beat my record of falling over in hilarious circumstances on the dancefloor twice in one night at SF?

Ally C, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was Jonnie and Disco Dave the ones who freaked out during Moldy Peaches and knocked the DJ booth flying?

masonic boom, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Upstairs at the Garage has a very slippery floor, especially when it's wet. Ahem.

Madchen, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not really an answer but more of a Question... Is all you folks do on this site is knock people down? Some of you can be pretty mean. I feel sorry for you! Chris de Burgh is a very good man.His music is every bit as good and maybe better than most and he deserves to do what he does the best.. You fellows out there shouldn't be jealous... I hope to hear every one of his songs played every day... How about that?

Gale Deslongchamps., Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does that include "The Lady In Red (Is Dancing With Meat)" by V/VM

And yes, all we do on this site is knock people down. That's why it's called I Love Fisticuffs.

Tom, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I found this site quite by accident but wouldn't mind telling you that I have met Chris de Burgh a couple of times, and he is a gentleman no matter what any of you think... Good luck to you all and when you can write music as well as Chris does, then you have a reason to knock him down. Yes he also has many cd's that all you folks have been missing... Sorry for you! Please try to be nicer to people... Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it has to be said, Chris does make a smashing salad. i mean, you can't knock him for that, really, can you?

gareth, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

LOOK GALE LOOK - we love C De B really!

Tom, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

five months pass...
Gale - DID YOU EVER get to hear "The Lady In Red (Is Dancing With Meat)"?

Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Tom , No I haven't, and unless it's done by Weird Al, I don't wish to. I don't listen to radio that often. I probably missed the new version!

Gale Deslongchamps, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's Meat? a new group or something?

Gale Deslongchamps, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gale! though I really love CdeB and his Muse and I strongly admit his adeptness through singing but I think even Chris doesn't like to debate about his adeptness, his candidness,etc... as he said:"It's all about honesty. I like to think that what people see behind the music is a person who is sincere and honest. The kind of songs I write and record are different from the mainstream. Like it or not, here is someone rowing his own particular boat, in a particular direction that he knows..." let these guys knock him down but it would really can't detract his dignity...that's what you and me and our ilk can "see" in him...these guys can't "see" that 'something never changes' coresspondingly we can't "see" what they can "see"...and as Ludwig Wittgenstein, perhaps one of the most influential philosophers, wrote in his 'Tractatus': "What we cannot speak about, we must pass over in silence."
