What's the most romantic thing somebody's ever done for you? And what's the most misguided 'romantic' thing somebody's ever done for you?

Tom, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think flying 12,000 miles qualifies in both cases

cabbage, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I phone a friend?

Ronan, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Less distance than cabbage went through, I think, but same thing in both instances for me. Jane flying out for Christmas last year was wonderful. :-) The 'misguided' instance happened in 1994 and I won't go into that.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Glass Head or Flowers or Jewelry. Little random gifts .

anthony, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking nude pix of me and posting them on the net. Don't get excited, they're not there anymore

dave q, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The comedy gorillagram I got Kodanshi to organise for me = dud, romantically

mark s, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I once saved the pubes from my teeth. Ah...those first pubic remnants of the cunniligal moments.ahhh...sweep me away, you sweet hole of life. By gum. I also give flowers

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So long as they aren't crappy carnations from the garage. Or roses with all that gypsophilia crap.

Emma, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean ladies can tell when flowers have come from the garage? SHITE.

Tom, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i. one cold night someone got me up onto the ironwork of a train trestle, where we clung to one another for warmth and kissed as the trains flew overhead. i will never forget that night. all it takes is someone who's not afraid of train trestles.

ii. inviting me to a cabin at big sur. two years after we'd broken up. which offer i took her up on, to my permanent chagrin. backbiting and recriminations = dud.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Snogging in the middle of This Is A Low by Blur at Glastonbury as the sun went down.

I wish I knew who she was.

Pete, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That isn't you doing a romantic thing, that is you doing a thing in a romantic situation (well, you thought it was) which was not of your making. Did you ask Blur to do that song? Did you make the sun set? No. I think not. Romantic = doing totally unnecessary but incredibly thoughtful things.

Emma, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Romantic = doing totally unnecessary but incredibly thoughtful things.

Is that why John and Kate had that copy of LOGIC PROBLEMS in their bathroom for ages?

Tom, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most romantic thing done for me - making and painting two wooden bookends.

Most misguided romantic thing - writing me a poem. This was not in itself misguided at all indeed it was a very lovely thing to do but I am a bastard and criticised the scansion or something so the entire thing was a disaster and I have perhaps rightly never heard the last of it.

Tom, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Petes story was beautiful and moving Emma, you bitter cynical bitch you.

Ronan, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's cynical about saying that just snogging someone isn't that romantic in itself? Of course it can be but not always.

Emma, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was joking so I can't really back up what I said at all.

Ronan, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As words go, snogging is particularly unromantic, so I agree with Emma. A better description would change my mind.

maria, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most romantic thing: I suppose continually travelling 400 miles and shelling out lots of cash. Either that or tying my shoelaces together.

Most misguided romantic deed: Making me a chocolate cake for my birthday using a duff recipe off the internet, and burning it to a crisp. Very amusing though. I still ate it, btw. How great am I?

Ally C, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There seems to be a lot of long distance travel involved in romance. Is is because it lends it a certain kind of epicness?

Magnus, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Precisely, Magnus. That's *exactly* why I'm love.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I once bought a girl a packet of Love Hearts and a Curly Wurly, which probably fits both categories. But no one can call me stingy, they were Giant Love Hearts. I'm like a Roger Sanchez video.

Graham, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Erm. I think a lot of this could be down to context. But the most romantic thing anyone's ever done for me was turn up at my place of work with a packet of Transforma Snacks. No, really. But you have to know the rest of the story, and I'm not telling.

Not sure anyone's pulled any failed romantic stunts on me, but my biggest failure was attempting to break into a girl's boarding school, being mistaken for an axe-murderer and being carted off by the police.

alex t, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For what reason, Alex? Because you were sexually aroused by the uniforms or because you disapproved of the private education system or both? (seriously, both the above descriptions apply to me)

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just got into an argument with my fiance. We worked it out. He called 20 minutes later to make sure I was really okay. It was very sweet, that's romantic. I hate flowers and shit.

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Woah, Robin, TMI!

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

TMI?

(a genuine question, Richard: what does that mean?)

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever about flowers theres definitely nothing romantic about shit. Although if you were given flowers and shit, you could grow the flowers better possibly.

Ronan, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

IAUT'TMI'SF too much information. TRTAHAFY!

gareth, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do that kind of thing all the time Ally but I always assumed it was unhealthy co-dependence rather than romance.

Tom, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1) Bringing 30 Red Roses from Amsterdam to Glasgow.

2) Giving me a tape full of crap romantic songs when I was already in a relationship.

stevo, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevo, next time bring pot from Amsterdam. ;-)

nathalie, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or tulips.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Robin -- I'm not sure either of the possible reasons you suggest would count as 'romantic.' The actual reason was that I was really worried about the girl (ongoing self-harm saga) I wuvved but wasn't going to see for a couple of weeks. That I believe to be a romantic reason. And that I was really pissed. That's not romantic. And that it was a feat supposedly unachievable in the myth and legend of the school that I was at. That's not romantic either.

alex t, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No they're not, you're right Alex. One is arousement, the other is convinction. I succumb to both these emotions more readily than I do to romance, obviously.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm really down on the misuse of the fine word "wuv" to mean actual romantic "love".

Tom, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nobody has ever done anything romantic for me, ever. And the only Valentine's Day gift I have ever recieved was a chocolate heart that had been deliberately squashed.

rainy, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I was at work being annoyed at being at work per usual and I got a phone call. "Do you like ice cream?" "Yeah I guess so." 5 minutes later I had ice cream, it was awesome.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

:)

I like surprises.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the most romantic thing somebody's ever done for you?

I think it involves Vietnamese pork sandwiches, but don't hold me to that.

Annouschka (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

most misguided romantic gestures ever thrown my way are all unfortunately from the same person. this boy, whom i may have kissed a couple of random times at parties while intoxicated, has completely embarassed me on several occassions.

he once ran after me as i was leaving a party with my then boyfriend screaming, "emily, don't go! you look just like elizabeth shue in adventures in babysitting. please stay and talk to me." he then fell down out in the yard. i went over to make sure he was okay, and he extended one arm towards me. in his hand he had a flower from the shrubs. "at least take this" he said. and passed out cold.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

My story isn't the most romantic thing ever but I was trying to keep to the strict guidelines set up previously. Emilymv's story makes me laugh! It is kind of sweet in a horribly embarassing way.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

fourteen years pass...

tfw someone talks to you about one thing but their eyes are saying something else - something romantic
Probably just my imagination tho

calstars, Saturday, 28 April 2018 11:26 (seven years ago)

a cry from the distant past when we spoke of banh mi as "vietnamese pork sandwiches"

ziggy the ginhead (rushomancy), Saturday, 28 April 2018 13:03 (seven years ago)

yeah we call it ‘flag post’ now
