What do you all do?

What do all of you do for a living? Do you like it? Do you have some secret desire to be doing something else? I'm starting University in a few weeks to study Journalism, as some of you know, thats what I do. This may have been asked already, but I was too lazy to check.

Ronan, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dg was right about getting stuff on the new answers page.

Ronan, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i study ( art history and this year english), teach, write (in fact have something published tomorrow), assist a professor, cook, keep house ( except vacuuming) , cook and am a lector.

anthony, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where is Hannibal these days?

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't you mean What are your job titles Ronan, as it is perfectly clear that most of us piss away the day arsing about on ILE.

Emma, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That comes under the secret desire to be doing something else.

Ronan, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(surely NOT arsing about on ILE comes under that secret heading)

mark s, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ah touche. I don't know how to do the accent.

Ronan, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm an "Internet Analyst". I might try and get my job title changed to the equally meaningless "Editorial Co-ordinator" since that sounds much better in the time of the dotcom bust.

Tom, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What are you meant to do or qualified to do? Is that ok with everyone? I'm going to start getting a solicitor to check my posts in future.

Ronan, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My job title is Student Union General Manager. What I actually do is anyones guess.

Pete, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a software developer in an investment bank. I want to get a more techie, engineery job, but I am scared of the pay cut. This leads to a spiral of self-loathing as I sit alone in my bedroom surrounded by gleaming consumer goods, crying.

Sam, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Somehow this seems deja vu to me. Didn't we already talk about our jobs? Anyhow, I am a slave for my parents. They torture me but pay me royally. I tried to escape my fate but alas I was sucked in the sales world. We have a jewellery and antique lace shop. Before I worked for my parents, I did two years of psychology.

nathalie, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't see it so it won't kill you all to talk about them some more for my sake.

Ronan, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a bicycle repair man.

x0x0

Norman Fay, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shh, what about your secret identity?

Pete, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In the middle of September I shall go and pick apples for 3 weeks, then I shall probably go and work in Sainsburys until Christmas, go to Egypt, come back, work in Sainsburys some more, then go to university to do Egyptian Archaeology.

Bill, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am a novelist: you are my novel, or will be heh heh

Ch.28. Ronan and Pete have an affair

mark s, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At the moment, technically I don't exist. I just finished my masters degree, but I'm not signing on, therefore I'm not registered as anything! I once worked in a library. I'm not really qualified to do much, I wrote my dissertation on "online diaries: identity, community and youth". I would like to do a PHd one day, and go into research or teaching. Though first I need money. So, I recently applied for a library job and got an application form for a 'communications assistant' job. Today, I walked the dog, and did laundry, so maybe I do have some skills after all.

I wouldn't mind being a writer, artist, musician or film maker, but who wouldn't want to be one of those things!

jel, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chapter 1: Marks novel fails miserably and he is left with no friends or money in the street.

Ronan, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I program computers. It is currently extremely dull.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I work in a job where people know how much I loathe and despite Excel and then give me shedloads of work to do involving lots of Excel knowledge. I can be found GLARING at Excel often and typing in "I HATE YOU" to the little Dog Help Thing.

Today is more of the same. BUT IN FRENCH.

Oh, temp typist is official title. My secret desire is a SECRET you fule.

Kris, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Retired.

duane, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I calculate the commissions of the sales people at the company where I work. The highest earners get ten times what I do each month. Don't enjoy it that much, but it's not all thankless drudgery. Heck, it gets me a trip to Denver on a burning death trap aeroplane twice a year, doesn't it?

Madchen, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I go to school as of yesterday and do three to five hours of homework a night, which leaves me maybe half an hour a day for the computer. I am jealous of all you people who sit at work and check ILE all day.

Lyra, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Student (=nowt) + occasionally this.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I edit text files for a living.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello. I am arguably a student, or at least between bouts of studentdom, but am spending more and more time daydreaming about how it would be preferable to change that particular job description to "dropout". In the meantime, my current job title is HTML Monkey, Company Scapegoat and Database Mangler Who Also Usually Ends Up Doing All The Cardkey Data Entry And Then Having To File It Numerically Which She Is Quite Shockingly Bad At Considering She Was On A Course Which Shared 20% Of Its Lectures With The Maths Degree. Catchy, eh?

Where is your shop, Nathalie? I mean, what town/city? I was in Bruges recently and saw many lace shops but didn't go into any; it would be weird to think that a fellow ILEr and pavelister might have been working at one of them. Not that I would have arrived stalkerishly at the counter if I'd known or anything, I'm just curious...

Rebecca, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oooo did I get vaguely insulted by Ronan up there? I'm not quite sure as it wasn't funny. Ronan, you're going to HAVE to get better at this before you start your Sordid Hack Stewdent course.

I have a few interesting facts about Foot and Mouth Disease if anyone wants to know, but more interestingly I can talk about the Common Agricultural Policy which I believe Ronan has also mentioned fleetingly elsewhere. However as I am now even boring MYSELF, only ask if you are both sadist and masochistic and... MENTAL.

Sarah, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Compuders

gareth, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No I wasn't insulting you, I'll do my best in future though ok? Just so you don't feel left out :)

Ronan, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"only ask if you are both sadistic and masochistic and mental" Is this a lost Ron Atkinson quote??????

Ronan, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a lawyer. I work in trusts and estates, mostly in estate planning (lots of tax work) with some occasional trusts and estates- related litigation.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
I'm going to own up to being a librarian (though I have probably mentioned it elsewhere), because I just want to say that I HATE MY FUCKING JOB! I am telling you, because the people I regularly communicate with are tired of hearing it.

DeRayMi, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I spend most of my reference desk time signing people up for the internet, rebooting computers, and the like. It's ever so slightly tedious.

DeRayMi, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I run a bar. It's great.

Matt, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

queenoftheharpies, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't realize you were a librarian, DRM. You and Nicole can compare horror stories (as a library assistant, I can share the burden ;-)).

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm on a sickness benefit. plus my dad died. also i arrange contract hits.

unknown or illegal user, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Still a student, occasionally interning at software engineering firms.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't realize you were a librarian, DRM. You and Nicole can compare horror stories (as a library assistant, I can share the burden ;-)).

I decided when I introduced myself (on the ILM introductions thread) to pretty much leave out nonmusical personal detail. I'm not entirely happy that I've put so much information about myself online, but then, it's not as though I am guilty of any terrible crime, just easily embarrassed about certain things.

Anyway, I hardly get a chance to do real reference work, and even that has turned out not to be my favorite thing. I often find myself feeling that I'd either like to do the research myself or truly teach someone systematically how to do it, rather than holding someone's hand as they stumble through their research, which seems to be a lot of what reference work is. I do enjoy the collection development side of my job.

DeRayMi, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, also, I'm not sure I know who Nicole is (with apologies to Nicole). I don't really even lurk at ILE very often, let alone post here, but I guess you have probably noticed that I mostly turn up on ILM.

systems analyst for i.t. finance wing of gigantic company lawfirm. Can't stand it. Trained as a graphic designer, but was looking in vain for a job around the time the economy started to tank. Now, I'm right on the brink of quitting and, I dunno, waiting tables for a living while I jump whole-hog into theater stuff. Because...why not? I'm not getting any younger and I've got the whole back-end of my life to be boring and safe.

I was a "health care provider" in various capacities (licensed nurse, then in unlicensed/"counselor" capacity when I moved to a state that didn't have Psych Tech licensure) until 2003, more or less - there were several years there when I tried my hand at other things, but nursing is sort of What I Do in my mind - I will always think of myself as a psych nurse & there are things about my old work that I miss so bad I couldn't begin to put it into words. mainly the kids I took care of. being there for kids in crisis, being able to provide any small help: that's a blessing from God right there.

in late 2003 I became a full-time musician. it has made me insane & completely wrecked my health in a whole bunch of ways, but it's also pretty much What I Dreamed of Being (although: the "become a super famous novelist who changes lives & blows mind" precedes the Makes Music For A Living dream, and is still, like, possible, if I work hard) and that's something I feel every day, so I try not to complain about the Now I'm Crazy and My Health Is Permanently Wrecked, though I am kinda whiny sometimes and given to complaining if I don't check myself.

moonship journey to baja, do you like your job?

Right now I am a 'peer educator,' meaning I teach students of ~20 students 1/3rd of the week's biology 111 info @ my university. (ie instead of 3 lectures a week, there's the 200 student lecture hall gig 2x a week, and on the third I do the teaching to a smaller group). It is a pretty groovy job.

I am also a student, undergrad, working on it since 2k1 and I *might* graduate a year from now if I am lucky.

abbott,

it's a tough job but i like it okay. the hardest thing about it is that adolescents are really cued in to your emotions and reactions, and having to keep up a very professional front can be very exhausting, especially with the demands of the job. i mean, the plus side is that i get to talk and think about things that i find fascinating (really) for a living, the downside is the same one i imagine real-estate agents face: the constant pressure to keep it positive, be upbeat, be happy-peppy, etc. you really gotta be a cheerleader for the teenagers, and for me that's been tough this year because i'm going through a divorce. so i've sucked pretty hard at that aspect of my job, though i hope to be better at it this upcoming year.

there are a lot of threads on ilx about becoming a teacher or being a teacher and i talk at length about it on most of them, but let me know if you have any other questions.

ps - there's a huge maturity gap between college students and teenagers, so i'd try doing what you're doing with teens for a while, maybe as an afterschool tutor or a substitute teacher or whatever before you get any preconceived notions of what it's like.
