Housework - Classic or Dud?

Now that I'll soon have my own apartment, purchased with my own money, I've been extremely anxious to immerse myself in a subject that I didn't take too seriously when I lived in my parent's house -housework. I figure that I'd BETTER take care of those oak floors and those nice bathroom tiles because if I don't, the apartment resale value won't appreciate.

In fact, with the helpf Cheryl Mendelson's Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House, I've even begun to soothe myself to sleep each night, imagining how I'll wake up early every Saturday morning in my apartment, and have the bathroom scrubbed, the pantry restocked, the clothes washed and ironed and the floors vacuumed by noon.

Ms. Mendelson (a philosopher by trade, it should be noted) says that when a person finds a routine and a level of commitment they're comfortable with, housework becomes perhaps the least alienated form of work of them all, and hardly the font of mindless drudgery that, say, being a lawyer often is.

Is she right? And what's your stance on housework? What's your housework routine? Do you even have a routine?

I do not like housework. I am not good at it. And I do not do it much.

I'm sure all the people who know me and have been to my house are just reeling in shock at that answer.

Darn you for getting a place, Mike, if only because what looked like a sure purchase for me fell through because of a lawsuit, and now I'm dealing with a housemate who can't immediately pay his share of the rent. GAH!

Housework = roXoR. I like getting into a stage of organizing and cleaning up, the end results are very nice. Vacuuming, dusting, dishwashing, the works.

Ned is hereby invited to move in with me and Joei any time he wants to.

I'm flattered, but it'd be *so* much nicer if you could move out here and take your movable assets with you. Yes yes.

I reckon there's a mathematical LAW for this. People who OWN a house always seem to have them kept obsessively neat. Scrote wot rent their own place like wot I do throw things all over the place. Unless you are the Arsemonkey in which case you are rather neat.

In fact, I'm just a slob. I'll tidy tonight, after Buffy, I promise.

My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first is hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint.

Love that Erma.

Laurel? Laurel? Blimey, I hadn't noticed you here before. Hello!

Nick, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello yourself, Slinky! Been a long time, eh? You should come and visit us sometime -- all the best people do. Right Sarah?

Pyth, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah if you saw my house you'd realise that your law had been disproved, or I may be the exception to the rule.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, there's me as well. Sarah's law = poo.

I think I've said before I don't mind hoovering. But, it's a half hearted hoovering, just do the wide bits of carpet you can see, forget about under tables and chairs etc. Laundry is okay, I like sitting in front of the tumble dryer on a cold day.

My policy, if I can write my name in the dust, it's probably time for some cleaning.

Stuff gets done when it needs doing (ie x days after Katie says: 'this is a mess, sort it out'). I dislike housework unless it's cooking.

two weeks pass...
We have too much stuff to keep it cleaned to surgery standards.

It always makes me sad to think of housework because my mother, whenever she was mad or angry, she'd never talk about it. She's just clean and clean all night long, often never sleeping.

There is something nice about doing it, it has a comforting repetitiveness. Plus cleaning toilets is the best, it is so dirty before and clean afterwards and does not take long to make that sparkling transformation. That satistfies!

five months pass...
It's classick because it's good for clearing your mind. I get into a very meditative state when I'm cleaning the house. It stops me obsessing over stupid shit like money and relationships..
