hmmm...someone said on the championship manager thread that one of their mates used success in championship manager to apply for actual football management positions. suppose the fa / fai / sfa or whatever decide computer management games whizzes are the way forward, and appoint YOU as manager.

outline who would be dropped, who woud be in for the next game? who would never play for their country again? who would still have hekey as england's first choice striker?

as for ireland, i would do my best at banishing ian harte. i would either play finnan at left back (which may work as he is quite good with both feet) and go oshea and cunningham in the centre. if finnan doesn't fit in, i would try oshea on the left, and put breen in the centre again. anything but harte.

duff would go back on the left wing where he belongs, and i'd be tempted to have connoly up front with keane up front, as hes the only other striker in good form (in div1 admittedly). reid would take over on the right wing.

but thats enough from me.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 06:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Every match, I would start with a 4-4-2, try and get an early goal, then bring on a defensive midfielder and revert to a 4-5-1. From then on I would play exclusively on the break, and if in doubt boot it out. Forget total football, I'm all about negative tactics.

oh and if they have a star player, give him a kick.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

If I was Sven, I would pick Beattie. I wonder why he doesn't?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

because they have prolific strikers like heskey and vassel obv

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

tbf i think vassel could yet be great, and he has always been at the top of his game in the england shirt. heskey gets a harder time than he deserves (he can be brutally effective sometimes) but i think england could do better.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Sven likes the idea of using Heskey as a traget man, to get knock-on's to Owen, but the thing is this isn't his game. I dunno if Beattie could play this role, and wouldn't just get in Owen's way. Vassel will be a squad player unless he decides to leave Villa (sorry Villa). And Seaman, just retire already!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

what about rooney and owen for a nice merseyside combo?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

killian is otm about ireland
kilbane should never play again
duff is worth 25 million on the wing, not up front
(although to be fair he played well up front against georgia)
i think anyone who followed ireland during the mc carthy era would have had a lot of changes they'd like to see-id like to see kerr given a chance to sort it out though,i have a lot more faith in him..

robin (robin), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

and if england are going to play heskey up front, for whatever reasons they might have, they should counterbalance his complete lack of creativity by having rooney play just behind the front two
of course this would be quite a tactical reshuffle, but scholes could also play in this position, and i think england need to do something to make themeselves more of a threat

robin (robin), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

hmmm, I'd stick with Heskey and Owen, Rooney can be super-sub for now. Midfield is a problem, perhaps England would be better off with with a 5-3-2, have Beckham, Scholes and Gerrard in the Centre, and have Southgate, Ferdinand and Campbell as the three main defenders. Wingbacks, I dunno, Neville on the right (boo!), Bridge on the left, just coz Ashley Cole is injured.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

One of the biggest problems with England at the moment, and in the World Cup at times, is the lack of decent service up to Michael Owen. Paul Scholes has never really looked his best playing for England under Sven, and I think he could do really well in the behind-the-front-two knock up role earmarked for Rooney above, if he was given a free role, similar to his one at United. I suspect Rooney will force his way into the starting eleven sometime soon, and then its bye-bye Emily.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Drop Heskey, play Rooney alongside Owen. Never, ever allow Gerrard to be injured again. Teach Paul Scholes how to pass or drop him - replace with Jenas. Wait 18 months for Carlo Cudicini to become British, or install Paul Robinson and keep him there. Vassell has never been good enough - Beattie should replace him on the bench.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

but Vassell gets goals...he's got the same karma fix, or 'score-aura', that Steve Stone had (as you can the utilising of Eileen Drewery would be paramount if i was in charge)

i think a 4312 will suffice, i doubt sven will consider playing without a "targetman", and there's not much width there now so play to yr strengths. dyer's always gonna cut in, murphy too and beckham will prob be more influential still further infield. england are suffecated by their system more than anything, a little fun n' flexibility will inspire the kidz! also try out smith instead of heskey more

alternatively drop scholes!!! and risk jenas or joe cole (who i suspect would be a better international playa than domestic)

persist with woodgate and ferdinand at the back

hard to accomodate + has never played THAT well for england. in sven's opinion, that is. i'm guessing, anyway.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 09:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

zemko makes some good points (for a QPR supptr!)

1. Don't play people out of position. We need a left sided midfielder, so make a shortlist and pick one. It's NO GOOD picking a right footer - you need someone who plays there all the time and can go outside the defender and cross at speed NATURALLY.At international level you haven't time to fart around getting the ball onto the correct foot, and any decent defender can defend easily against a one-footed 'winger' as you know which way they'll go all the time. Jesus - pub players can do this! A shortlist might include Thompson (Celtic), Bridge (OK, he's a full back maybe but looked good when Sven tried him there), Gareth Barry? There must be a few more. The key point is that the player may not be an outstanding individual, but makes the team as a whole more balanced and effective.

Don't even think about fucking MacManaman.

2. This knock-on effect of this is that there is more competition for places in central midfield. If you only consider players in the position they normally play you'd have Dyer, Cole, Murphy and Jenas pushing Scholes and Gerrard. More competition means you'd better be outstanding or you're out. Scholes gets too many chances on the back of past goals and the fact that he plays for Man U.

3. Up front. Heskey - no, thanks. Honest and full of effort he may be, but he's miles off being an international striker. Nowhere near. Owen is another problem - I'd play him for now, but his style of play makes it very difficult to decide who to pair him with. I'd love to see Alan Smith get another go, but could he play with Owen? Maybe stick Rooney in from the start against Turkey? He has no fear and might just grab a goal early on.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Keeper - Robinson. James doesn't inspire confidence. Longer term Robinson and Kirkland to battle it out like Shilts and Clemence did in the 70's?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 09:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think sven is quite keen on rooney, and he clearly doesn't have a problem with his age, so i think him and owen will become the strike pairing before long...

but you have to admit that scholes is the weak spot in the england team at the mo. he just goes missing during games

I think the problem is the way he's being used for England, rather than his current form. He's been arguably Man United's most important player this season, so it's not as if he's turned shite. Whether the problem's more psychological or tactical, it's still down to Erickson to try and get the best out of one of his few world class talents.

(I wish it was the case that he's just showing the right level of priorities - put in the effort for the important United games and deliberately coast it while turning out for England - but I don't think it is.)

I agree with Dr C's point number 1. The bleeding obvious choice would be Le Saux, but given that looks unlikely now, why not give Barry a go?

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think barry is looking like the sensible choice. he's had a good season...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 11:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

we have so much talent coming through and yet established players aren't shitting themselves about there positions, if i was Paul Scholes, David James and Emile id be scared in to playing well but they are not.

Sven drops Jenas - big mistake, Sven did't play Robinson against Leichtenstien - big mistake, Beatie or Smith cant get a game (although Smith's sending off didnt help) Southgate is ahead of Woody (although his injury didnt help).

Sven seems reluctant to really blood youngsters when even Whitney knows "children are our future"

Robinson in goal,

Neville, Rio, Sol and hmmm is Bridge better than Cole, will Cole finally have a good game for england like his ability would suggest he could??

Jenas on the left, Gerrard and Dyer in the centre, Beckham on the right.

For the moment i dont see to much trouble with Owen and Heskey but the big man needs a couple of goals soon or he's gotta be gone (incidentally Owen seems to be becoming more of a drifter outwide so i think someone like Beatie could come in to the squad and fit in well)

james (james), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 11:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

How was playing David James a big mistake in a game where we didn't concede? How is Sven reluctant to blood youngsters, when he has created the youngest ever capped player?

I think we are strong in the middle and with few good players on the flanks (not just left midfield but right back), so I'd go for 3-5-2. Robinson in goal until Kirkland starts convincing us otherwise or we can nab Cudicini. Ferdinand, Campbell and Woodgate across the back - a trio that could last. Beckham is a naturally hard worker,m so I'm leaving him on the right of midfield now, with Cole and Bridge fighting it out for the left side. I think Le Saux's as good, but I'm disinclined to go backwards now. Gerard and Jenas joined by a very attacking midfielder. I'd like a look at Joe Cole in this role (Zemko may well be right, but I'd suggest he gets some shooting/finishing practice), and Dyer outplayed Scholes on Saturday and on other occasions. I'm slightly reluctant to rely too much on Rooney so soon, but there really isn't anyone making a stronger case to partner Owen, so that's my pair. I'd regard my front three as being pretty flexible - I don't want the opposition to know where they are. If they man-to-man mark the front two, they must pull wide and leave space through the middle for Cole/Dyer/Scholes.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

scholes played centre mid for manyoo in years gone by; his role is entirely different there now. gerrard does not play to scholes' strengths like keane did, and it looks like neither knows quite exactly if they should bomb forward or hang back a little more than they usually do, thus blunting both. anyway perhaps james ball would like to speculate why sir alex deciding that taking manyoo up to the next level meant replacing him with veron and moving scholes further up. i never liked this whole "oooh lookit scholes daring runs into the box" because it was always so bloody vague. ljungberg's runs seem scripted, trained, scholes' do (or did) not

agreed about barry. again, another player who might be more at home internationally. very shoddy treatment of him so far.

zemko (bob), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wouldn't play 3-5-2 'cos none of the big clubs are playing it now.

My team if everyone fit : Robinson : Neville, Ferdinand, Woodgate, Bridge : Beckham, Gerard, Scholes or Jenas, Barry : Owen, Rooney.

Bench from : Jenas or Scholes, Smith, Southgate, Lampard, Dyer, Vassell, Terry, J. Cole, A Cole, Beattie, Kirkland, Murphy, Defoe.

No David James. No Campbell. I can't think of a third keeper who should be there. The U-21 keepers are either reserves (Bywater) or Div. 1 (Murray) so who else is there? The only other regular English premiership keepers are Hoult (not for long) and Richard Wright.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 06:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Joe Cole was a bit of a menace last night, he kept losing possession in very dangerous places, in a top level game they would have been very costly. Of course he was showboating. Gotta love him though

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 06:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah i only watched the first half but i remember him trying to do a flick in his own penalty box, making a hash of it and turkey almost scoring. its too early for the international stage, methinks.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 07:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Risky - but wouldn't you like to see someone try something unexpected for England? I would! We're so unimaginative. I agree that it's best done in the opposition's box rather than yr own though.

I though Rooney showed real poise and flair when he got the ball in the Liechenstein box and let it run onto his left foot before shooting. Pity the second defender blocked it cos he hit it well. I'd play him.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 08:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

gerrard does not play to scholes' strengths like keane did, and it looks like neither knows quite exactly if they should bomb forward or hang back a little more than they usually do, thus blunting both. anyway perhaps james ball would like to speculate why sir alex deciding that taking manyoo up to the next level meant replacing him with veron and moving scholes further up. i never liked this whole "oooh lookit scholes daring runs into the box" because it was always so bloody vague. ljungberg's runs seem scripted, trained, scholes' do (or did) not

Agree on the first point - Erickson clearly isn't getting the best out of Scholes. The comparison with his performances last year (for United) is interesting. It took him a while to settle into a new role further forward (god knows why, it's not like he hadn't played there before - when he broke into the team it was as a mini ginger Cantona), and now he feels he has to stay further back for England, making his performances more confused. You could make an argument that change initially inhibits Scholes, that he needs his manager to more clearly define his role. (btw, I should point out I didn't see Saturday's game, so I'm relying on reports as to how he played.)

You asked me to speculate about buying Veron. I don't think he was bought as a 'replacment' for Scholes - he was bought to add to the strength of the squad. I don't think Ferguson had settled on an ideal first XI in his mind when he bought him (and how often do you have a chance to field that nowadays anyway with injuries, suspensions etc?). I think it was a case of wanting to add Veron's stengths to the team rather than any deficiencies of specific players.

Your point comparing Scholes and Ljungberg seems a little nonsensical. Scholes makes 'effective' runs into the box because he often scores from that position (whether it looks 'scripted' to you or not), as does Ljungberg. Scholes also scores a lot of goals from hanging back outside the box and getting on the end of knockdowns/clearances/deflections. His scoring record (equally strong in internationals, albeit not recently, and in European games) suggests he often gets the balance right.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 09:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Am I the only person who thinks that Joe Cole flatters to deceive when he's playing much of the time? I think I'd go for the majority of the midfielders mentioned so far over him at this stage. It's probably too early to plonk Jenas in at the deep end, although I'd certainly set him up as competition for Scholes.

Midfielders haven't been named yet, and Barry could be in there. I doubt it though, even if I think he should be.

Phil Neville is in because he can play in three different positions on the pitch, even if he's only really any good in central midfield. I'm surprised to see Southgate in there, but Matthew Upson, how your stock has plummeted.

Stay away from Ulrika Jonsson in future

replace Trezeguet by Saha and get Rothen in the starting XI at the expense of one of the DMs.

Am I right in thinking a Sylvestre blunder led to the Swiss goal? Why is Santini still playing him?!?!??!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:53 (twenty years ago) link

I know. Resp for two penalties and last night's goal. Only Boumsong could replace him though (Desailly being obv not an option).

The worrying thing about that squad is the continued reliance on Michael Owen to be getting goals. If he's not getting goals then Heskey, Rooney and Vassell aren't exactly goal machines, which is why Defoe should've been in the squad. - Matt DC

You still think so?!

Matt's not doing too well on these threads!

ha who needs Sven to spot players !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Why is he called Zat? Is it a misprint?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:26 (nineteen years ago) link

short for Zataday, as in 'alright for fighting'.

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:31 (nineteen years ago) link

No, but seriously, what is Zat name all about?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Yep, if our best six or eight central defenders aren't available, Knight will do to warm the bench.

Just like Shaun Derry, eh Martian?

It must be a great honour knowing you're the best English centreback that isn't Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, John Terry, Jonathan Woodgate, Ledley King, Wes Brown, Jamie Carragher, Matthew Upson or Michael 'five games for Spurs' Dawson.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Shaun Derry got a big move to play for a club that represents the 3rd largest city in England ;-)
