I rented the Wertmuller original years ago. It is kind of shocking how the rich bitch falls for deck boy or whatever he is after he slaps her around so much and verbally abuses her; I don't recall him getting that much bad treatment before the tables were turned. And the heavy political theme didn't really resonate with me, but probably not that many Americans identify with a socialist main character either. I think it had pretty location photography.

The remake sounds like a cool idea you have when you're stoned or something. I mean sure, I can picture Madonna in that role. But to actually spend the money and go through with it and make the movie?? If I recall, Wertmuller had a real socialist agenda to push, and that's what drove the making of the film. I can't imagine Ritchie and Madonna have the same agenda. I didn't see the remake, btw.

Most of Wertmuller's other movies push a vaguely socialist agenda, but in The Seduction of Mimi, Giancarlo Giannini's character falls in with the socialists just because he's after Lena Wertmuller and eventually becomes pretty disillusioned with the whole thing.

I was thinking about this film, and then yesterday quoted a line from the trailer to Knockaround Guys, and wondered when oh when is that film coming out here, and then walking past the video store on the way home saw posters advertising the presence of both of them. Oh well.

As today's Onion says, "DVD Contains 87 Minutes Of Previously Unseen Movie"

I just remembered that I talked about this movie for 5 minutes with my mother while drunk at my cousin's wedding in Santa Barbara. Despite not having seen either version. Oh dear.

It's horrible. The guy isn't bad, though. He deserves a better movie. He is the son of the guy in the original. I kinda like the original, but I'm not a big wertmuller fan. I've been a madonna fan/watcher for like 20 years now and she still makes me cringe. Records=beautiful. Videos=great! Everything else? She makes me want to hide my eyes like i'm a little kid watching a horror movie. All her press appearances make me want to hide under the sofa. I have hours of old videotape that is like a worst-of. Madonna on Arsenio making me cringe. Madonna on nightline making me cringe. Letterman. MTV. It's endless. And fascinating as well of course. The weird accent. All of it. I find it so hard to believe that a woman with that much money can't find someone who can teach her how to act like a human being in a movie. It's so strange. I mean that's how bad she must be. I can't believe that she would allow that movie to come out with her looking the way she does in it, either. She looks truly bizarre. Not just old/no makeup/harshly lit-which is true, too-but like an alien or something. Like nobody that you would ever want to see in a movie! Oh, I could go on, but I gotta run.

Abel Ferrara's comments on her performance in his film Dangerous Game are amusing. He said he's never met anyone who was moer selfconscious in front of a camera, and eventually he decided to incorporate this discomfort into the character rather than try any harder to get Madonna to act.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 23:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, than maybe she should work with more freakish junkies who like to make people squirm. Too bad it's my least favorite movie of his. It would go, Ms.45, King of New York, Driller Killer, Bad LT., the Addiction, The Funeral, China Girl, Miami Vice Pilot, and some others I can't think of and way, way, way, way, at the end would be dangerous game. too bad annabella sciorra didn't play that part. It might have been watchable. And I love Madonna, mind you!!!!!

nine months pass...
Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie sued over panned 2002 remake of Swept Away
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A lawsuit alleging that Madonna and her husband, director Guy Ritchie, stole the idea for the 2002 film remake of Swept Away will go to court May 4.
In the lawsuit, Vincent D’Onofrio, self-described singer, songwriter, director and actor, alleges Madonna and Ritchie took his idea for a remake of the 1975 Italian comedy and then cut him out of the credits and compensation.
D’Onofrio is not the actor of the same name who plays Det. Bobby Goren on NBC’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
The movie, which bombed at the box office and was panned by critics, was directed by Ritchie and starred Madonna as a wealthy woman stranded on a desert island with a sailor.
D’Onofrio sued Madonna, Ritchie and Sony Pictures in Superior Court in October 2002, claiming he pitched the idea to Madonna in April 1997 and had several meetings with her and Ritchie.
Lawyers for the couple have said D’Onofrio has no proof of a contract with Madonna or Sony. D’Onofrio’s lawyer said he would seek $10 million in damages.

In a train wreck kind of way? Or am I missing something? My first impression is that it's like L'Avventura in color - which is very wrong.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't think it was so bad. The part where they were on the boat seemed to drag on and on. I loved the way it was shot and I actually found the ending quite sad. Madonna is pretty horrible in it, but like above, I just chose to believe it was the character that was one dimensional and stiff. I also found it fascinating that no one involved in the movie put any kind of stop to it while it was in production. Who exactly are their friends?

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago) link

Meh. I think Wesley Snipes' blonde hair is a little 'over the top'. But it was a decent movie overall.
