Insurance Problems

One of the most popular venues for bands to play at here might have to close soon (story here) because no one will insure them. It's not a question of money - they're solvent - they just can't get their policy renewed. Any crap like this happening where you are?

A certain rather nice non-profit group here in Portland has been helping to get the permits for the war protests, and their insurance freaked out and dropped them.

Lots of insurance companies are changing their underwriting guidelines right now, and are not insuring a lot of risks...especially things to do with live music. It's not a good climate to have to look for insurance in; one thing I do is get people special event liability policies for one-night events, and lately the companies that would insure that kinda thing are getting away from it like it smells of death. But because of it, there's lots of events being cancelled (a recent hip-hop talent contest, a few punk shows, even a stand-up comedy showcase) 'round here.

fifteen years pass...

not really an insurance problem so much as a horrified fascination with the techniques that some of its salesmen deploy: in this case -- the housing association i'm in is shopping round for competitive building insurance -- the guy just unendingly reels off utterly boring examples, as often as not abt aspects not at all in question (ie we've already said YES), until all everyone in his presence wants is for him to be quiet and go away and the world to end, YES WE'LL SIGN SHUT UP… and then when we've finally wound the meeting up and said goodbye and we'll get back to him he starts chatting, in downtime as it were, about everyone he's learnt from rugby and cricket and terrible teachers he had when he was a boy in the 1950s :0 :0 :0
