be gentle with me, this is only my second question EVAH.

a screw fell out of the bottom of my chair, and i delivered this fantastic 80s movie quote perfectly, without batting an eyelid, to the hilarity of NOBODY. uncultured swines.

so, when have your well-timed & hilarious references to greatness gone unnoticed in this way?

raar.

Your colleagues just thought it would have worked better if you had been commenting on someone else's screw falling out.

What film?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, the uber k-rub one.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you're irritating them by being clever all the time and they're ignoring you?

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

did i say "be gentle with" or "brutalise"?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I get so confused. I met your friend Marcia - she is nice.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

As we all know, movie quotes don't always cut it. That is all.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i have no friends named Marcia, but i think i know who you mean.
and aye, she is much, much, much nicer than me.

As we all know, movie quotes don't always cut it. That is all.

ok, i'll go now.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought I'd got her name wrong somehow. Don't go!

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I could say it was my cleverness that makes people ignore me, though!

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

oooh, you need me now you're getting names wrong, eh?

ha!

say nice things about Ally Sheedy and i'll stick around.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The trick is to say things that amuse YOURSELF... and screw everyone else.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, i was trying to lighten up and get out of the 'fuck everyone' thing.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You didn't get my little pun! I amused only myself!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

But there's that old quote, isn't there... man is man's delight or something... so I guess we all want to get attention, really.

I don't want to screw everyone, anyway. *Anyone* would be okay. :)

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

damn right i want attention. sheesh.
it's not like i try to hide it....

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I'm getting embarrassed about it. It's Catch22... if you act like you're desperate for it, people think you're a sad creep and steer clear -- but if you act like you don't care, people think you're cold and distant and... steer clear.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a sad, cold, distant creep, though.
'tis important to find a balance.

I have had a three-day layoff of ILE due to work being manic. This was the thread I read first. The title drew me in...... If only the person at the National Accident Helpline or whatever had said that to the woman in the advert whose chair falls to pieces, the world would be slightly less imperfect.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's ever worse with song lyric quotations. They actually anger people sometimes. Every 18th century poem and novel had obscure (probably even then) quotes from poetry heading each chapter/stanza. I wonder if that made the 18th century reading public angry. But always make yourself feel good:

...we got the munchies and we made some spaghetti...

Skottie, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

well if it makes you feel even the slightest bit better, I would have laughed.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

he thought it was 'marcia' because of my great accent or something like.

I don't recognise this quote but I have never properly seen the film.

I love living on my backwards little island, because I can just say stuff like "nothing to do, nowhere to go" or "I wanna Rock & Roll all night and party every day!!" and my friends will just go "right on, dude!" cuz they don't know the songs (they're used to me saying stuff in English when I feel like it)
