i like it, and i don't plan on stopping. but i don't seem to be getting any "better" at it (i.e. i can't really go much further than i could when i started a couple months ago) and underpants are still constricting me.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i feel like a fucking yuppie even asking this question.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't your legs fucking tired as hell?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate bicyclists with a passion.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(except for you, jessy wessy)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess that means I won't be riding my bike to come visit you, JBR.

hstencil, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

eat my peddlin' fuc rosen

no they're not! (nb: the only muscle tone i've ever had in my life has been in my legs, so this might be why. i need some kind of bike where i can do pullups simultaneously.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess=The Donger

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh i thought it was one of those indoor bikes.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

haha no no its a real bike. i'm still boughetto

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

if your legs feel wobbly and weak when you walk around later, you're doing it right < /kate >

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the bike is my vagina

yeah i guess i'm just not riding long enough

i just realized what a weird question that is in the subject header

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

A fitness guru who I met professionally said that spinning is the only thing better than running/treadmill. He said simple bicycling is good too - and this was a guy selling miracle fat burning pills, soloflex type machines etc. He said don't buy my BS, just get a walkman and start running.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

also, it's too fuckin windy! i almost got blown off the bike today!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm more concerned about your underpants.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

How often do you ride? I'd guess that you'd need to do it 3-4 times/week for a few months before you notice any improvement.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i ride every day pretty much, into and sometimes back out of time, only about 2-3 miles a day tho.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

So what's that, like halfnhour of serious pedaling? Probaly not long enough to do much good, unfortunately.
If I had time, I'd try to take a little more convoluted route ea. time until eventually your passing through Terra Haute.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah no more than an hour tops. maybe i should ride across country and have david lynch follow me around

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No. You should move heavy objects around, like JBR and I do.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't want breasts tho

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

HA!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

So just lay off the chest flys, Harvell. Excuse me, I confused you with someone who wanted exercise.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

aw

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course you're getting exercise. If you want to lose weight though, you still have to STOP EATING SO DAMN MUCH.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

how did you know?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

2-3 miles a day is practically nothing, though, and that's probably why you're not feeling it (dawg). I needed to do 10-15, 3-4 days a week to see results. Most cyclists who do it for exercise do it for at least 7 miles a day.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(nb: it's not that i eat a lot it's just that i eat total crap)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately, I'm in the suburbs, so I can't do that anymore. I'm gonna switch to blades, I feel safer that way.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, olympia is nice because there are bike lanes on almost every road. i mean, it's not perfect - i saw someone get totaled by some big old buick last week - but it's better than when i was in PA and i had to dodge SUV's every two yards.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw someone get totaled by some big old buick last week

excuse me for a moment.

*goes over to corner, covers mouth*

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(you were saying?)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope you get run over

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget i fucked your girl.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i think of it often

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

so does she.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I kinda will too.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't want breasts tho

What kind of man are you?

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

in fact i'ma go to the restroom and think about it right now

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

You should ride the bike naked; not only will your underpants worries go away, but you'll never have to lock the bike up.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

brings a whole new meaning to the phrase: banana seat

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

you wouldn't even need it.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the bike is my vagina

I'm substituting "jess's vagina" for "bike" everywhere in the thread, which makes Dan's post funnier.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

if only this bitch had a search and replace function. ah well

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember, Jess: the next time someone mistakes you for a girl, you've only yourself to blame.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i need to cultivate my mysterious betweenness

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Telling us you wear underpants is a good start.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

actually today i'm going commando...nothing clean

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

why do my honest to goodness threads always descend into foolishness?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

See: 'underpants'.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

blast my infernal truthfulness

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Strange thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have thought that riding a bicycle is a good form of cardiovascular exercise. Plus if you cycle in the countryside you might get some fresh air.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Quit talking about his underpants, Ned.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Here in London we have buses and tube trains => I do not need a bicycle.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I picture Martin pulling the tube trains as if they were rickshaws.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

well, the central line did just open.....

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I read Oops's last post with the UK definition of "pull" and was very confused.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

UK def.=?...

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My understanding is that if you pull someone in the UK, it means you've slept with that person.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to pull my mom before I got my own crib. (Hah! Decipher the levels of slang in that one!)

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess you'll only see results if you increase distance/intensity/resistance or all of the above. 2-3 miles is nothing especially if it's an easy ride. If there are hills hit those, and try riding harder faster and in a lower gear. Feel the burn! (I just got done with my spinning class, can you tell? I have an ass of steel!)

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

PICTURES!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Last summer, tried riding bike for 2-3 miles 5-6 times a week while eating shitty food. Result: better stamina, but not much weight loss, and when I stopped biking, PLOP the fat came right back. (Note: most of my ballast is attached to my derierre unt midsection. Plump & juicy, c'est moi.)

This year, after losing my job in early January, and not being able to afford to eat shit (that is, fast food) every day, I've been partaking of home-made sandwiches, cooking every so often, and limiting my run-ins with the Grilled Stuft Burrito to once or twice a month. The exercise I've been getting involves haulin' ass from the parking garage to my 10 AM class (which I'm always late for, naturally), which amounts to 10-20 minutes of walking a day. Result: loss of nearly 2 inches off my waist, the emergence of knees on legs, vaguely improved stamina.

What this means: I shouldn't've eaten Taco Bell for lunch.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope nobody minds me unloading the bike thoughts running thru my brain on this thread. i rode my bike to work today for the first time in ages, and the weather was beautiful for much of the day. but come quittin time, there was this evil cloud system passing thru - the big daddy cloud was GREEN (!) - so i'm looking up at the sky and thinking "aight muthafucka, IT's ON!" and start pedaling like a madman, trying to race the rain. coming thru the headphones was "ess gee", which sounded appropriately frantic. anyways it didn't rain, but it hailed, which was nice because i didn't get wet.

plus i got a new saddle on the way home

jess, you should ride yr bike up here when matos is in town - guaranteed exercise!

ron (ron), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Riding a bike is better than not riding a bike. But if you ran the same distance or for the same amount of time, you'd get more exercise. Bikes are great machines and save time and energy, thanks to inertia and gravity.

If you want to lose weight, eat less, exercise more. If you want to help your heart, exercise more. If you want to fight osteoporosis and look better, lift weights 2/3 times a week and continue to eat less and exercise more. Doesn't really matter how. Kind of trite and far easier said than done. That's how you can tell it's true.

Skottie, Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ten months pass...
how's it going jess? with the underpants, and the bike i mean..

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 28 February 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Dude, I want a bike. I'm thinking about getting one from this guy.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 12 April 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

If those bikes have had any tuning at all, the prices are well worth it. They're probably all stolen, but if you don't buy one, somebody else will.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 12 April 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm buying a bike next weekend! my budget is $150. can you get anything for that? i don't care if it's used.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 12 April 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

my budget is $150. can you get anything for that?

Yes. Three blow jobs.

Skottie, Monday, 12 April 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it true that you never forget how to ride a bike?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 12 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

there's that rapier wit again

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 12 April 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

between this and the "grapesoda" threads i am rethinking my "ilx is a-ok" stance of late

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 April 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

in that case, do your best to stay away from roger's pearls of wisdom over on ilm

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 12 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

you know i have mad love for teenage groupie whores

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 12 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Dumb bike-hater stances are very, very unattractive. Please be sure you never say that to someone who has lost a biker friend under a lorry.

Minneapolis is great for biking - my mom's house is about two miles from the lake system, each lake is three miles around with 1/4 to 1/2 mile between. City has really high property taxes but at least it's palpably being spent on the park system. I start at Lake Harriet and go around once, then ride to Calhoun and go around once, then back to Harriet for water (Victorian gingerbread snack hut next to cute steam railway) and another lap. So when I'm home to visit and it's nice out, I can easily do about 12 miles each morning. And no contretemps with cars or walkers because these are dedicated bike paths. I think you have to do five miles to get any burn going.

If I could find a London bike route where I could ride without being in danger or inhaling the world's blackest fumes, I'd be so happy.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

I had a freind killed two years ago yeasterday by an asshole who thought like you. Should I tell his daughter what you said? How about this, "Go To Fucking Hell, you stupid cunt."

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why the italics tag didn't close, but the sentiment is still there. To all you that think that abusing cyclists is fun, the redneck that killed my freind is getting fucked up the ass for 12 years on a 2nd degree murder conviction.
Keep in mind that most of us cyclist now carry cell phones. I have personally caused a truck driver with a local construction company to lose his CDL and therefore his job due to his running me and my girl off the road intentionally, and refusing to apologize.
I may be a bit hostile in this area, but not only do I beleive that cycling can change the world, I also don't like thinking about a guy I knew being drug underneath a truck for 400 feet until he was so mutilated that he had to be ididentified by the serial # on his bike.

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately people are now being shot on their bikes for their cell phones.

Is it getting worse in evry possible respect?
