Christopher Lowell: WTF?

He's some kind of histrionic uber-homo who does a decorating show on the Discovery Channel. The one episode I saw was about how to shop for home decorations at Target, and his aesthetic seemed to involve covering everything with ugly, patterned fabric Bea Arthur style. Is what he does gay minstrelsy? If not, why not? This question also probably applies to Rick Steves (travel show on PBS), to a much lesser extent. What is it about stereotypical gay behavior that appeals to the elderly (the target demographic for both shows, far as I can tell)? Martha Stewart could easily kick both these clowns' asses; she's gotta be the Britney Spears of domestic engineering.

Martha Stewart is HORRIBLE. Bitchbitchbitchbitch.

suzy, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think she's graceful, yet strong.

Kris, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Martha Stewart is awful yet compelling. I want her to come smack my condo's bitch up.

If you want true OOT campy vamping, turn to any random show on E! "Fashion Emergency" in particular is EGREGIOUS.

Is christopher lowell married????

Adrian, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't understand the appeal, either.

His presence on TV is a weird historical blip. He should've been born twenty-thirty years earlier and joined the great wave of gayish folk that inundated talk shows back in the seventies and early eighties. Wayland Flowers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Liberace, Rex Reed, Richard Simmons, Rip Taylor, Paul Lynde, Boy George (and Truman Capote, maybe?) – truly a great era for funny, self-loathing, sexless gay men. Maybe Lowell appeals to the same folk, now a quarter-century older, who helped buoy those aforementioned careers. Or maybe he just appeals to trolls.

How about Jm J Bullock? The problem is that there aren't any good variety/game shows anymore. That's where these guys really seemed to shine. All that stuff they show on the Oxygen network doesn't count, because no-one watches it and it sucks.

This just in---I heard from what I consider to be a reliable source today that Christopher's gayness is just a put-on. It seems he felt that a gay decorator was more credible than a straight one. My source says that he read an article that revealed that Christopher is both straight and married. Go figure....He deserves an Oscar...I really thought he was gay although it doesn't really matter to me one way or the other. I enjoy his show. My son says he suspected all along that he was a phony because no truly gay man could possibly be THAT flaming....

Well then it's minstrelsy, pure and simple. But I don't buy it.

Mr. Lowell, regardless of his "background" is a genious in design. His ability to design without spending thousands is a blessing to us "middle of the road" folks.

The question is not what his preferences are, but his sense of good design.

Home decoration wise: Ooh, no. Too fussy, too frilly. As bad as the style of that Anna Wintour wannabe on Shabby Chic.

Nicole, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That woman on "Shabby Chic" is from SATAN. I don't understand why Joei watches these programs; she spends almost as much time cursing them as I do.

Dan Perry, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I could just slap her. She's smugger than Albarn. And those design tips! Yeah, paint everything white and surround it with knickknacks...

Nicole, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was this other show we watched once where this woman took a perfectly lovely enclosed porch (complete with jacuzzi) and turned into an IMITATION GOLF COURSE. We were transfixed by the sheer horror.

Nothing beats "Trading Spaces" for pure comedy value, though. The frozen, crestfallen looks on those poor people's faces when they see the havoc wreaked upon their previously-functional rooms is pure entertainment.

I think Christopher Lowell has great ideas just love his show.. He has given me so many ideas in updating my 96 yr old home and has saved me loads of money since I can do most of the work myself... I just wish they would hurry up and do some 2002 shows...

I now have a mental image of Martha Stewart in this outfit. Yikes.

He is the coolest person on the planet. These are some gay things he says: "Ohh, for heaven sakes" and "fabbeeless". He seems to wear girley clothes.

Mr potato head, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah. He's gay. The other day i saw part of the show and he and this other guy were making something and when they were done he grabbed the guys hands and continued talking....still holding the guys hands...HE's VERY GAY!

christopher is absolutely gay, speciallly when he has so much fun dressing up as a woman, who said this was humor... this does not affect his abilities as a decorator , he gives you great ideas thatv are not expensive, but please when are we going to stop seeing re-runs....
