In This World - what do you think?

Okay, its not on many places but has anyone else seen Michael Winterbottom's new one - In This World. I thought it was terrific (with reservations). A simple road movie, given a degree of relevance being the journey from Afghanistan to Kilburn High Road. Refugee, economic migrant or person?

The music was a bit overdone in places, and the early voice over was odd, but the thing looks terrific, the drama sucks you in and you leave gobsmacked. Go see.

just saw it.... what happened to this thread?

it's an extraordinary film, i was moved and stunned throughout. the rest of the audience seemed gobsmacked as well, and lingered breathless for most of the credits.

the DV images are often breathtaking. The cameraman also shot "Dancer in the Dark" and "28 Days Later..." two milestones of DV but this film far surpasses either.

i don't know about a "simple road movie"...it's about a refugee and his very specific sort of journey (though it really only ends halfway in a certain sense). it's a fantastic example of a cinema of social concern.

the music seemed like a kind of compromise, one that i could accept.

i think this opens in the US soon.

the lead character is himself a young afghan refugee who was denied official refugee status in england. the film essentially retraces his journey (or a version of it) and was shot in pakistan, iran, turkey, italy, france, and england with several crews.

Haha!

Well, I guess everybody already said what I was going to say re:the music, Winterbottom, the film in general. Still, the best film I have seen so far this year, probably.

So, to recap:

I can't believe it was shot on DV. Iran and Turkey look incredible.

Some flaws, though. Notably the wall-to-wall music. What were they thinking?

Michael Winterbottom is quite a fascinating filmmaker, IMO. Even if he has yet to make a truly great film.

It is amazing and powerful, but I think the power had more to do with the story being told rather than how it was told.

That may have been the only option, given the way it was filmed and imagined, and maybe going too far in a more fictional/dramatic direction would have been too much. But I don't know if it was a great film all the same.
