LEONARD PART FIVE

(my saddest post ever)

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 4 April 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Notable mostly as a cinematic butt-of-joke. The kind that Billy Crystal might reference in an Oscar monologue, to much knowing chuckle.

Other examples from its era: Ishtar, Howard the Duck, Hudson Hawk

jaymc., Friday, 4 April 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But he had a stick of butter!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 April 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I was kind of obsessed by these Leonard Part Six promotional mini-cameras they were selling or giving out at the time.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 4 April 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Obsessed with, I mean. Obsessed with.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 4 April 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Hudson Hawk is entertaining. "George! You promised no more old CIA/new CIA jokes." And the romantic angle is... a singing cat burglar and a nun! Plus, Richard E. Grant.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 4 April 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember seeing Howard The Duck. I enjoyed it, but then I liked all kinds of crap movies at that point in my life (I was about 7). I'd quite like to get hold of one of those anthologies of the original 70's comics it was based on, which I gather are a kajillion times better.

Hudson Hawk was Bruce Willis' pet project, wasn't it? He thought it all up himself. Apparently for a period before he was famous, whenever he'd answer the phone at his home he'd go "Hello, Hudson Hawk Productions..."

Later on I always saw Leonard Part 6 in the local Circle K (now Alldays) video rental section. I sometimes thought about getting it out but I would plump for Weird Science or something instead.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

James, you meant Par 5, didn't you? It's ok. No biggie.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

Sad

Dr Morbius,, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

Dan, FB, and I all saw Leonard Part 6 together in the theater. The great thing about this is that this is when our town's shitty movie theater closed down, and as a result, "LEONARD PART 6!" was on the marquee to greet visitors for at least three years afterwards.

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

Bill Cosby plays Leonard Parker, a former CIA spy who is recruited by the CIA—again—to save the world from an evil vegetarian who brainwashes animals to kill people... The film ends with Leonard infiltrating the vegetarian base, fending off the vegetarians with magic meat he received from a magician, freeing the captive animals and flooding the base using dish soap. He escapes by riding an ostrich on the roof of the building, with the ostrich flying him down.

kenan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

From wiki:

The Roots wrote a song entitled "Leonard I-V", the eighth track on their debut album, entitled Organix. The lyrics of the chorus include a repetition of the phrase "Whatever happened to Leonard parts one through five?"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 11 March 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

From imdb:

Bill Cosby purchased the television rights for this movie to make sure it was never shown on TV.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 11 March 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

whoa

get bent, Sunday, 11 March 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

It was not the project he expected it to be, but any actor under contract is obligated to complete that project or face legal action. However, as the film was about to be released, Cosby appeared on several talk shows denouncing it as a terrible movie and advising people not to waste their time or money on it.

i would love to see clips of these

It's no "Mother, Jugs & Speed"

Surprising that Bill Cosby hasn't had this taken down yet.

:-O

strongohulkington, Thursday, 12 July 2007 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

OMG there is so much wrong just in the opening credits, including but not limited to:

The ridiculous voices for each of the credit animals (by Mrs. Johnson's third-grade class)
"Music by Elmer Bernstein" with what appears to be a Rototom solo
"Cinematography by Jan DeBont"
"JOE DON BAKER as Snyderburn"

Somehow this led me to calling up the Wikipedia page on Ghost Dad and I am now thoroughly confused:

Elliot Hopper (Bill Cosby) is a recently widowed father of three who has nearly bankrupted the family in attempts to save his lingering wife. Elliot is working on a business deal to get the family out of debt when he climbs into the taxicab of a maniacal Satanist.

In an attempt to end the ensuing mania, Elliot proclaims that he is in fact Satan and orders the driver to stop the cab immediately. Overwrought with the confrontation, the driver releases the steering wheel. The taxi slams into the barrier of a bridge and teeters over a river. As Elliot frantically tries to exit, the vehicle topples into the river, an incident which appears to kill both occupants.

Rather than awakening to a day of reckoning, Elliot finds himself floating around the lab of a scientist studying the paranormal who agrees to "send (him) back".

Elliot, who had neglected to get life insurance before his accident, fears that his children will grow up impoverished without him. As a floating spirit that can only be seen in darkened rooms, Elliot returns to his house and concocts a scheme to somehow finish his business deal and be approved for health coverage before his body is discovered and news of his death is made public. His children are in on the plan and try their best to keep their father's secret.

I mean...the Satanist part alone.
