Getting Fucked Over By People You Don't Know But Are Forced To Trust, C or D?

So I haven't heard from the guy who said he'd take my room since Monday. I am in the midst of packing up all my belongings to move out tomorrow. I've paid the April rent here because the guy who said he'd take my room didn't show up Wednesday for our agreed-upon meet-up. So I might have to pay rent for two places, and I'm more than likely going to have to scramble to find someone else, if I even get the chance. I've sent a couple of polite emails to this guy asking what's up, and called his house, to no response. I'm a little freaked, but don't have the time for it (or fucking around on the internet, either, but I have to check my email in case this guy writes me).

Does anybody hate as much as I do being put in the position where you have to trust people you don't know at all? It's one thing to be let down by people you know, because you might have an inkling that they're not trustworthy, but what about complete strangers?

This thread is pretty applicable to my work, too.

hstencil, Friday, 4 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

so no one has an opinion on getting fucked over by complete strangers?

hstencil, Friday, 4 April 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh...dud?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough. Anybody got any good stories so this thread doesn't completely die?

hstencil, Friday, 4 April 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! There was once this guy I knew from this webboard who got fucked over by, like, some guy who was going to rent the apartment he lived in. Or I guess he was moving out of it. Anyway I don't really remember the details but I guess the guy was a stranger and he didn't do what he said he would so he (the guy from the webboard, not the other guy) seemed pretty upset about it.

OK, maybe this doesn't qualify as a "good" story but I think it's on-topic.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

gee, thanks for sharing.

hstencil, Friday, 4 April 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

that sucks. I'm always terrified when things like that aren't put into writing. Also, I would probably actually worry about the guy, "what if he's dead, or something" only to find out that he's just a dick.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Did this guy sign any sort of lease or give anything more than his word? If not, look for someone else to take your place. If he was interested he should have got back to you by now even without you contacting him first.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No Sundar, we just had a verbal agreement. I didn't have a lease for him to sign because I'm not on the lease either, and have just been subletting since October. I have already started looking, and fortunately one of my roommates has helped out (some people will be coming by in the next couple of days), but there's only so much I can do as I'm packing to leave tomorrow. Obv. if this guy wasn't a dick, he'd have gotten back to me by now.

hstencil, Friday, 4 April 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Assume that he's not going to take it. If you haven't gotten any money from him then he's gone. Really. Put up another Craig's List ad today, and then go ahead with your move. Check back on Monday. You might end up being out half a month's rent, I guess, but it's better to take action now rather than wait around.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, Yanc3y I'm assuming he isn't gonna take it, and we've already got another craigslist ad up. That's why there's six people coming over in the next three days. Best case scenario is at this point being out half a month's rent.

hstencil, Friday, 4 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh which Craigslist ad is yours? I've been scoping it out for a couple of days in preparation for when I move in July/August.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, the one in Astoria?

hstencil, Friday, 4 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine switched jobs and took a pay cut. The verbal (d'oh!)understanding was that his salary would be increased within a few months so that it would equal his former salary. They dicked him over for over a year until they finally gave him a raise to the salary they'd initially promised.

More recently, when bonus time came up, they gave him a tiny bonus, since he'd gotten that "big raise" already...the raise he was owed much, much earlier as part of the hiring agreement.

The key to keeping this thread alive is to remove the word "over" from the title.

donna (donna), Saturday, 5 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, Saturday, 5 April 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah for hstencil! Especially getting yer net fixed up on the day of the move -- after all that idiocy back in January I am resolved not to let it happen to me again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

*bows in acknowledgement of this great power*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got this same sort of problem. I'm moving in a week and need to find someone to rent my leased place so i don't have to pay two rents at once through the end of summer (an impossibility). So your story is particularly scary to me. :(

Dan I., Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yay hstencil!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Sunday, 6 April 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I had the reverse happen.
I had subletted an apartment for the summer while taking a couple of classes. I needed to move out for the beginning of the fall semester and find a new place. Went to the university, got some listings and found a room in a house. Now the house was owned by the parents of one of the future roommates, but she was taking care of renting the rooms. We came to an agreement, but she didn't have a lease on her. She told me to come by the day before I had to move with first and last months rent and we'd take care of the lease.
When I showed up, she had rented out my room. We had an argument, which she, of course, won, being that I never signed a lease. I did call her names. This gave me about 16 hours to find a place to live and move.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Sunday, 6 April 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and big fucking dud.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Sunday, 6 April 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 6 April 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Good job hstencil. Now when's the vegetarian bbq?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 6 April 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

whenever landlord and family heads to Italy and we can comandeer the backyard.

hstencil, Sunday, 6 April 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I was gonna say 'trust no one.'

No, really, I don't. Feels like I've had it abused too many times. I think this is a bad thing and I'm hoping for experiences that give me a better outlook.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Sunday, 6 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud. Happens very often to anyone who owns a car that's not in good shape, and doesn't know anybody who's a mechanic, and has to get it fixed eventually.

(I figured no one in this thread thus far is a car owner, so I thought I'd fess up here.. heh)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 6 April 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to own a car, so I can sympathize.

hstencil, Sunday, 6 April 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm lucky to have car-savvy friends whose advice keeps me from getting ripped off.

Seems that this thread title could pertain to anyone who's owned a car, had a job, dealt with insurance of any kind, rented/bought a place, paid taxes, etc etc...
