This is the thread where you bitch about software bugs that you live with because you don't know how to fix

Aargh. Winamp 3 crashes every time I playlist all my mp3s; and my Opera browser for some reason takes a full three minutes to launch but I live with it 'cause it's still the best browser despite that! Shit!
I know other people must deal with stuff like this.
(oh yeah and if anyone happens to know how to fix these problems that would be very cool too)

More memory? More hard drive space (swap space)?

Even the best coded programs will fail in the absence of the above.

The most annoying one for me is when you get to the top rank in Space Cadet pinball, completing one of the missions often crashes the game - I've lost games with over 150 million on the board. Also, higher still, something goes wrong with the flippers and anything but a very oblique angle shot (these continue looking pretty natural) suddenly becomes a much more acute angle, making shots up the middle nearly impossible. At this point I can't hit anything, and generally give up. I guess because this happens somewhere up towards 200 million, it's not a problem that bothers many people.

Windows keep opening in Photoshop Elements 2.0 for Mac too high up - the top of them is hidden by the lower toolbar, which you have to temporarily close in order to be able to move them down.

There's a fix for that Winamp 3 bug - downgrade to Winamp 2.8x

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 6 April 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Soulseek could stop devouring memory whole... or its developers could have a more user-friendly response to it than "if it's a problem just restart it now and then."

Acrobat Reader could go ahead and kill itself when you close the window the plugin is loaded in when you view a PDF through Internet Explorer, instead of hanging around using 25+ Mb of RAM. You have to either end the task or start the standalone Reader and then kill it.

Other than that I'm pretty pleased with just about everything I use regularly.

Stuart (Stuart), Sunday, 6 April 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, not a bug, but this computer is so crappy that Photoshop (only 4.0) won't open sometimes if lots of other stuff is open. It just sort of hovers on the splash screen interminably.

(That will teach me to buy second-hand. My old computer blew up in November '01, and it was an emergency. Donations to my New Computer Fund™ are welcome!)

BTW, what's so great about Opera? No scarcasm, serious question. Never tried using it, just curious.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Sunday, 6 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Not so much a software bug as a current annoyance. I just update my computer to Windows 98 and it has trouble connecting to the internet. It connects but has trouble receiving date (ie doesn't) and sends very little, it looks for the page then comes up with a dialog box saying "Server not found" or somesuch. Anyone know what I can do? I've tried re-setting up my internet connection, but beyond that I'm flummoxed.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Winamp 3 suXors. Even the people who made it don't recommend using it. Get v2.9 instead.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, I now use v.2.9. Opera's good because it tends to load pages faster, but it's not that good that I'm going to put up with waiting so long just to use it. And all this confuses me 'cause I have, like, hella memory.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 6 April 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

which opera? i recently reinstalled 6.06 because the bugs in 7.03 were killing me. although i still use 7 most of the time, cuz it's where i have my email. the main things that bug me about it are that the startup dialog (do you want to: continue from last time? start with home page? etc) comes up all the time, even though each time i check "don't show this dialog again"

winamp3 only lasted a few hours on my computer, then it was banished forever. the ONLY thing good about it was that the volume slider works with my soundcard, unlike winamp2.

I guess because this happens somewhere up towards 200 million, it's not a problem that bothers many people.

This an obscenely high score Martin. I can't believe you can endure that game for so long. I may have said it before, but you should buy Big Race USA for a fiver, which is about a billion times better, or download Visual Pinball for free. 1000s of tables, including *all* arcade tables - free for the taking - and you can design and program your own games.

Simeon (Simeon), Monday, 7 April 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a bug, but I spent a lot of yesterday evening being frustrated by the fact that there doesn't seem to be a "p in a circle" special character (used on UK records for phonographic copyright or something) anywhere (in any fonts?!) on my mac. Any help?

marianna, Monday, 7 April 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't the P in a circle just a gag made up by the Beatles for Parlophone? Or shorthand for publisher?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 7 April 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no - explained here.
http://www.music-law.com/demotape.html

If you have MS Reference as a font - its ctrl 0174.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 7 April 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Simeon, where can I download that set of pinball games from? Though I confess, I do like getting the hang of a layout, knowing how to get free balls/replays, blocking out channels and stuff - you can't get really big scores without that.

Sorry, i meant to say that the above is a good place to start, just go to the downloads section. Also, check your mail for more info!

Simeon (Simeon), Monday, 7 April 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a cool chess game--I suck at chess but have actually managed to win a couple of times, and it's in 3D and has animated pieces fight it out. It was working just long enough for me to like it, then has refused to start since. It's in DOS. It won't run normally, or from the run command, from a DOS window in windows, or from a window in DOS.

Though maybe this is a problem of hardware more than software, as my computer can be cranky with DOS programs, and it's not that important as my machine may well be close to death anyway. Still--annoying.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

corr that circle P is something i've never noticed. it's unicode 02117 http://www.w3.org/TR/MathML2/isopub.html and is available on very few fonts

i'm gonna try the entity: ℗

http://desktoppub.about.com/library/faq/bl_circledp.htm has more info including a link to a mac font with it on! The only font I have with it on is the exhaustive Lucida Grande on mac os x.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

how about ℗

Alan (Alan), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

stunningly that works in Safari!

Alan (Alan), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I was always noticing the p in the circle. It would have a different date to the copyright c one if it was a reissue and stuff.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Revive!

I keep having Kernel 32 errors that shut down my programs (Netscape, Word, Adobe, Quicken). Windows 98. I have 255 MB ram.

Can anyone help me stop the madness?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

how does one get 255MB RAM?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:15 (twenty years ago)

i dunno. that's what my system info says. I installed some extra memory a couple of years ago. I forget what increments it came in.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:16 (twenty years ago)

stop running windows 98

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago)

hah.. jon otm.

but really maria, your best bet is to back up all important shit and wipe that slate clean

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I can't help I'm afraid, but this revive has happened just as I discover my work computer doesn't like audio-streaming and opera at the same time. And I'm trying to listen to the football on the radioweb while working late. Boo.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:20 (twenty years ago)

x-post
i was afraid of that

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:21 (twenty years ago)

or buy a new computer?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:22 (twenty years ago)

are you a computer salesman, cutty?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago)

no, but i used to sell weed in high school

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Anyone know a way to "persuade" MSDE (fake SQL server) to go beyond its 2gig file limit?!

Maybe not the place, but ya never know. This is giving me nightmares while I await my SQL server...

___ (___), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:30 (twenty years ago)

___, that's the point of SQL server

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:40 (twenty years ago)

I am aware of this. But while some bloke in technology tells me my proper SQL server will be here in "10 working days" (for the past x days), my project is running towards a deadline that won't move. And my database getting bigger. I am most concerned...
