Bill O'Reilly less of an asshole than previously thought!

Apparently. This got posted on an ILM thread about musicians and politics:

And if you listen closely to O'Reilly, you would realize that he's neither liberal nor conservative. He's even been interviewed by The Advocate and revealed himself to (a.) be a friend of homosexuals and (b.) be anti-death penalty.

'Friend of homosexuals' has its own patronizing sense, admittedly, but I figure that The Advocate wouldn't be interviewing him if it was only lip service, hopefully. Meanwhile, anyone against the death penalty is all right by me. Anyway, is this at all true? I was never a fan of the guy for many different reasons, but personally I think anyone who, despite his own carefully created image, even slightly disrupts the absolutist binary vision of mainstream American politics has to have a certain something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope you're right, but he still turns off the mike of his guests so that he can pretend he's winning the arguments. that's pretty nasty, even if he is going against the grain of left versus right.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Sunday, 6 April 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill O'Reilly is great because he helps me further appreciate Ludacris.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 6 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

you double your possible guests if you're always a contrarian.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 6 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Nate's reasoning! It also applies to The Boondocks, of course.

Teeny's point makes me think of Woody Allen's comment on bisexuals.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

What was that, Ned?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

the advocate is all about lip service, its the uncle tom breeders love us journal for semi closet cases who are too stupid and/or banal to read any real queer journals.

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 6 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Has its reputation collapsed that badly? My.

Martin: the exact line was something about how Woody was jealous of bisexuals since they had twice as many people to ask out on a date on Saturday night, ho ho.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill OReilly could want to suck my dick and he'd still be a loser.

Kris (aqueduct), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I really hate the expression "Uncle Tom."

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the fox news guy?

robin (robin), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

While we're on the topic, does anyone here know WTF "No Spin Zone" is supposed to mean?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Dictionary.com defines the colloquialism "spin":

To provide an interpretation of (a statement or event, for example), especially in a way meant to sway public opinion: “a messenger who spins bogus research into a vile theology of hatred” (William A. Henry III).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(it can also be used as a noun -- to colloquialize things even more!)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"spins bogus research into a vile theology of hatred" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

as with everything in conservative-media-land, it means exactly the opposite of what it says

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 6 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

so when they say they wanna lower rich people's taxes they actually wanna raise them?

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

O'Reilly had Dan Savage on there and apparently took a very pro-bathhouse position, though whether O'Reilly actually meant it or was just trying to provoke Savage is debatable. If the anti-death penalty position thing is true I'll have to give him alot of credit for that. All those guys - O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity - see themselves as talk show hosts first and ideologues second, I'm always amazed movie stars are afraid they'll get ambushed on O'Reilly cuz whenever any of them are on there he immediately goes into gushing starfucker mode.

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

O'Reilly is a total asshole no matter what his minor deviations from neo-con dogma are. Try and find a transcript of his interview w/ the son of a victim of 9/11. The guy killed was a lefty and his son was too. The discusion veered off into how the US supported the Mujadeen in Afghanistan, etc etc, then O'Reilly pulled out the "why do you hate America?" crap, then said that the son was insulting the memory of his own father(!), then finally cut his mic. Real nice guy there.

fletrejet, Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw O'Reilly do a piece on his show about how deplorable "lesbian chic" was and how society is TELLING young girls that being a lesbian is cool. When the guest asked why that was SO bad, he rolled his eyes smugly, said "come on...you know" and then said the girls would have a hard time getting jobs.

That's what friends are for.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill O'Reilly is a cunt, not because he is a "liberal" or a "conservative" or any other label you choose to apply, but because of the sort of theing that Anthony Miccio describes. O'Reilly is the sort of fellow who will use so-called common sense as an argument and believe that the case is closed.

-M, Monday, 7 April 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I still find it really bizarre people take the guy from Inside Edition this seriously

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I never waste my time watching this dude but he sure does piss off fletrejet so I think he's cool

Millar (Millar), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

you think that's funny - a couple of weeks ago FoxNews had a fullpage ad on the backcover of The Nation saying "Thank YOU for making us America's #1 New Source!", really funny, adn the letter's page for The Nation this past week was just lefties taking the bait hook, line, and sinker - canceling subscription, wailing hosannas, the whole nine yards. Really funny. You know Roger Ailes was like 'well that was forty dollars well spent!'

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Billiam is a demagogue and IT'S THE "NO WIN" ZONE!!

Vic, Monday, 7 April 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it how all these people on AOL message boards from Tennessee actually think he is a journalist and his opinions are "the news." Actually, I don't like it.

Vic, Monday, 7 April 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

No. Bill O'Reilly is a supreme asshole. But he is the voice for those who have increasingly little power in the first place. Now, he says protestors should keeps their mouths shut unless the war is proven immoral like Vietnam. Great at doublespeak though. A true ratings bitchwhore that makes fun of non-experts in foreign policy when he is a non-expert himself.

But not nearly as dim as Sean Hannity.

Cub, Monday, 7 April 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect for bill o'reilly:

Unprotected anonymous gay sex = more aids devistates the community = god's vengance is served.

[totally unproven of course but as I recall savage is pretty spot-on on this issue]

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

my roommate has the oreilly-savage tape, and it's certainly nothing worth noting. he challenges savage on a few issues, which savage goes libertarian on, but when it comes to bathhouses, savage is vehemently against. oreilly suggest by savages logic that if he wants to go to a bath house, he should be allowed to. savage concedes and thats it. later savage makes a big deal in his wack column, hinting that he tricked oreilly into outing himself or somesuch. it's crap.

jonas lefrel (jonas lefrel), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

so Whoopi and Joy Behar walked out of a View appearance by O'Reilly.

Way to buck that rigid, humorless, unwilling-to-engage asshole liberal image, ladies!

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 October 2010 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

They both looked terrible, for sure. What killed me was the audience. O'Reilly says something: wild cheering. Women walk out: wild cheering. Barbara Walters sort of castigates them: wild cheering. I think the audience was on loan from a Simpsons episode.

clemenza, Friday, 15 October 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

O'Reilly should've worn a Polanski mask for Whoopi's sake.
