I just had somebody dial up and without introduction play Mark Gardener from Ride doing a solo show somewhere over the phone

Which is nice and all, but who did this? Donut Bitch is the obvious suspect, except that show was last night...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone once called me and my mom and played Henry the 8th over the phone, it was probably that guy.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I called a friend once in the middle of a Black Dice show and just held the phone for a while so he could hear it. Then I asked him why the fuck we didn't have a band.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

hey ned, if you post your phone number, i'll call and play you black flag at impossibly high volumes

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe it was Andrew WK?

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Before you die, you hear the Ride.

(Sorry.)

bnw (bnw), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

don't be, we've all gotta go sometime

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess I kill you. Er, kiss you. Uh, never mind, good night.

If this was the Grim Reaper sending a message I would have thought he'd try a different approach than a gently aging idol of my youth.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

he'll take you to heaven before taking you to hell..

< /sideshow bob >

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It was your CONSCIENCE Nedikums, calling you from your Supereho's favorite heavenly hang-out to hypnotize you into getting over your Loveless, fetish and appreciating the other "ethereal" albums out there!!!!!

OR IT WAS STEPHEN THOMAS ERLEWHINE TRYING TO ASK U OUT ON A DATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OR IT WAS THE PSEUDO-GOTH GIRL WHO CALLED ME IN THE SUMMER BETWEEN 10TH AND 11TH GRADE AS AN "IRONIC" GESTURE OF ASKING ME OUT ON A DATE, EVEN THOUGH SHE DIDN'T REALLY WANT TO DATE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vic, Monday, 7 April 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

your Supereho

SUPERHO! A comic book hero for our times.

My conscience is busy with other things, Tom Erlewine wouldn't be so abrupt and your high school psuedo-goth person is now married to some middle-management guy. Maybe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

If this was the Grim Reaper sending a message I would have thought he'd try a different approach than a gently aging idol of my youth.

For some reason, I'm having grave problems trying to picture Mark Gardener as "gently aging". NoooooooOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo! He can't get old, it's just not on!

I mean look at Thurston Moore, he's like 75 and he still looks 15, there must be something in that?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that if the Grim Reaper were trying to send Ned a message, he'd have someone call who was playing "blasphemous rumours" on a really cheesy, plinky casio synth and with singing a la Jandek!

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a vision!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

Um, that show was tonight, Ned. :-B

I dropped something in the middle of that set, and while trying to retrieve it, I must have accidentally pressed my cellie against a railing and dialed your number. Ooops!

That said...

The Mark Gardner set was alright. If you hope to see him do Ride songs, you won't be disappointed. I think he's touring to plug a few solo songs (which unfortunately sound less distinct and more singer songwriterey in an Noel Gallagher kinda way) and the Ride best-of CD, or something.

Pinback was GREBT!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 April 2003 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

was he accoustic ? surely not.
did he only do the ride songs he wrote ?
or is he allowed to do the
ones he sang on aswell ?
did he do 'dreams burn down' or
'mouse trap' ? i bet not.

it was always hard telling mark and andy's vocals apart
so i get confused over who wrote what.

piscesboy, Monday, 7 April 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a call on Friday and Public Enemy was playing, I got one last night and it was some nice dub type stuff. The culprit was our own Chris Cabbage.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 April 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't this an aborted plot line from Back To The Future part III?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 April 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

was he accoustic ? surely not.

haha, um...

did he only do the ride songs he wrote ?
or is he allowed to do the
ones he sang on aswell ?
did he do 'dreams burn down' or
'mouse trap' ? i bet not.

i don't remember "Mouse trap". otherwise, haha, um...

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

and I don't know if "gently" describes Mark's balding pattern. "haphazard" and "cruel" is more like it, and unfortunately the bleaching of what's left didn't help him in this case. but hey, I understand that completely. and at least Mark is hot HIDING IT *COUGHDAMONCUNTCOUGH*

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(not, not hot, sorry)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"hot-hiding" sounds kinky.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you should stick with hot, much more entertaining. Yeah, I was sorta hinting at the balding more kindly than some -- I've seen the photos and the fringe is gone gone gone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, I'm glad I haven't seen those pictures, that would make me feel sad.

I wonder if the boy I used to know who looked exactly like MG now has the same baldness.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

an opportunity to hear an acoustic ride set by mark gardner = pretty cool. plus, he was joined by an attractive women (who?) with raven tresses for superb back-up vocals and another guy on another twelve-string acoustic. and yes, pinback was grebt.

j.a.e., Monday, 7 April 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Ride were all that ethereal.

Slowdive and Cocteaus and Chapterhouse, Yea.

But not Ride, apart from Vapour Trail. They were noisy fuckers, as were MBV - just thought I'd clear that up.

chris sallis, Monday, 7 April 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

& "kinky love" by pale saints was quite floaty too, but i'm just being pedantic now.

bang bang machine! now THERE was a single!

chris sallis, Monday, 7 April 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Whilst we're on the subject, can someone explain how spiritualized and verve escaped the shoegazer backlash?

chris sallis, Monday, 7 April 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

they were more psychedelic than the rest

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 April 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I never ever saw Spiritualized as a shoegazer band, personally...

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

One thing about the Mark Gardner performance that bothered me was that he would play out all the long, "freak out" parts of the Ride songs, despite the lack of other dynamics or other band members of what have you, which just sounded like he was extending a bridge for far too long -- for no good reason. Some nice songs, but I think that era of Ride was heavily dependent on the texture and noise.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed. any money they reform
when andy's finished touring with oasis.
didn't/doesn't loz work in homebase ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
Um, that show was tonight, Ned. :-B

I dropped something in the middle of that set, and while trying to retrieve it, I must have accidentally pressed my cellie against a railing and dialed your number. Ooops!

You know, this was a lie. I actually called Ned purposefully. There. Everything is all cleared up.

Confession is good for the soul.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool! It's a Scantron setlist!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I got him to play "In a Different Place", too!

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

EURGH. I think it's the tan that disturbs me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I like his glasses tho'

winterland, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

This sounds like a Calum thread.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ack! Ack! My eyes! My eyes! My evil ex-boyfriend and his evil band have truly destroyed him.

Ah well, at least he's not fat any more. God, look at all those teeth.

The blond. The tan. It's so... WRONG.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like someone ripped away my dreams of my youth, that picture. All those fantasies I used to have about Mark Gardner, and he grew up to look like...like...someone help me out here...

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ralph Lauren?

Bryan B Sure (Bryan), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Grg.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

His setlist is reminiscient of the pap smear log at work -- well, the paper, you know, not the words. Except maybe "Different." And "Vapor Trail."

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish that life could be just like a photograph,
One moment captured as you laugh your perfect laugh.
But that's a daydream, things could never be so right,
There's so much more to think about than black and white.

rest of my photos here

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Gardener looks like Simon Pegg!

Gosh, I really did have the same cut as MG in 1991, didn't I?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think both of you look much better now. 1991 looks like a parody of a crap indie singer.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

1991 Mark Gardener, that is.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't we all Stevie, didn't we all.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, who wants to burn me a copy of the 2001 3-song EP/BBC thing?

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Picture of Cabs with Shoegazer bob to thread now!

(Shoegazer Bob sounds like he should be a friend of Rattail Jim)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

He still looks pretty good for someone of his age...

and that tan.. that's just an english person on holiday/being in the sun isn't it?

I still can't believe I actually played with him last year

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Only one exists to the best of my knowledge, and I have no idea of where it is. (and in it, if I remember rightly am wearing a Shamen T-shirt)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I was scrolling down this and thought 'he looks like simon pegg.'

so do I what?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)
