personal attacks from strangers (internet mentalists and IRL): classic or dud?

this comment today on my live journal:

yo dude..

[some record company dude] wouldn't piss on your band if they were on fire...

[some record company] doesn't support mediocrity

..from some anonymous person who may or may not actually have any idea what my band sounds like. tremendously amusing, not least because the label in question could support mediocrity for Australia.

any stories to share of some complete stranger having a specific dig at you to your face/inbox?

dud if they wouldn't say it to you in person; classic if they would.

God, just search the ILX for some stunning psychological attacks on my persona. I'm conversational, me, if I say it online, more than likely I would say it in person. So I agree with you there, Clare.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Monday, 7 April 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i cant find it right now unfortunately, but there was another great one from some guy that said

"if you are ever in king's lynn i will give you a kicking"

!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 7 April 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the ben one is great because they gave me an actual phone number in the email, which doesnt seem to clever

gareth (gareth), Monday, 7 April 2003 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I had something like "you can talk, you're the worst offender of what you're whining about that I know" from some anon git in my LJ once. Never did find out who that was... someone from Brisbane, and I don't even know anyone up there all that well!?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 7 April 2003 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and this classic txt message last summer:

"if you talk to this girl again i will break both your arms. tosser"

gareth (gareth), Monday, 7 April 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(i should point out i have asterisked names and numbers and emails, because they are private conversations, and none of the people have given consent for me to identify them)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 7 April 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow Gareth, I'm interested to know what you're getting up to that you get such grate fanmail! :D

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 April 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I had some lovely fun with an internet mentalist who kept sending me creepy and threatening emails a few years ago - turned out he'd also been doing something similar to a friend. So seeing as though for some reason my friend had his address, he got somebody who lived nearby to go round and put a note through his door saying "dear ****, we are closer than you think - love j0e and ******"

he threatened to call interpol

it was quite funny

j0e (j0e), Monday, 7 April 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Back when I used to do the fan fiction site, I got quite a lot of weird random "Oh you horrible person you! I *KNOW* < Pop Star X > and he's NOT LIKE THAT AT ALL!!!" Usually accompanied by threats to tell the pop star and have him institute libel procedings.

Equally scary were the ones from desperate teenagers saying "Oh my god, do you *KNOW* < Pop Star X > oh my god, introduce me, I wanna f*ck them..." Uuuuuhhhh... yeah.

Erm... did you perhaps MISS the bit where it said in big letters Fan FICTION?!?!?

kate, Monday, 7 April 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a pm on IRC once from someone called maddieweg simply saying "i'll get you".

Madeleine (Madeleine), Monday, 7 April 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I kept getting ims from someone named stinkybeerfart## who would know all about my name, residence. classic since i was bored when it happened, and it cured that

Vic, Monday, 7 April 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I get a lot of ebay grief, mostly from people who don't want to pay for postage and want to meet me somewhere in London to exchange goods for money. I don't understand why they take it so personally. But they are idiots.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 7 April 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I got one email from some ilm mentalist that was "u suck u suck u suck" written about a million times because I said something nice about Destiny's Child. Oh well.

And of course my all time favorite is from this very board, but I don't feel like bringing it up again.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 7 April 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to put out a comics fanzine, and it was reasonably big in the UK. Whenever we would say anything negative about any popular mainline superhero title, I would get hate mail. It was always from idiots. Sometimes it was very threatening, but since it was only comic fans I can't say I was terribly scared.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 7 April 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Once I got a mail from some guy simply saying: "You are a fucking freak mate."

Chriddof (Chriddof), Monday, 7 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had a handful of sarky/nasty comments left on my site, but not recently. Someone leave nice comments!

And when I was dumb enough to have a guestbook... well, that was lovely. One msg implied I had sex with dogs. I got rid of the thing. Guestbooks are crap.

This stuff is dud; how could it be anything else?

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 7 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And a couple of people, during my worst periods of depression, have said to me: 'Next time you think of suicide, do the world a favour and do it.'

Two different people, though. The world loves me!

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 7 April 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Funniest personal attack from a complete stranger: "You know nothing about music!!"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I once played a practical joke on one of my good friends for a few months . I would send him emails from this junk yahoo account I set up, most of them were threatening to beat the shit out of him for banging this girl I made up. I pretended to be a thug, he was all nervous in his first couple of emails "I think you may have the wrong email address, Im sorry" . Than he started to get pissed off after getting swamped with emails. "Yeah mother fucker come down here and fight me, I'll kick your ass." Its was great fun. I began to drop hints in the emails, like inside jokes and crap that only he would know, and he still didn't pick up on it. One night we were at a wedding and I started reciting some of the emails and he though i was spying on his email account. Finally I let him know. I would get emails from his fiance all the time too asking me how he could stop these threatening emails.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 7 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

shit man that's way worse than yelling out a car window at strangers, as far as I can tell.

A few weeks ago I was at my friend Dan's party in Brooklyn, and it was winding down. Me, Dan, and a pair of women who also write for the Voice were in Dan's bedroom, as was a tall, drunk guy from Chicago named Lloyd, whom none of us knew and who was hovering over the proceedings to no discernible effect. Dan began typing all of our names into Voice.com's search engine to see what we'd written recently; he did mine last, and when he did, Lloyd saw it and snapped. "Dude! Don't fucking type that guy's name, he SUCKS! That fucker writes for the Chicago Reader, and he has the worst, most mainstream taste in the fucking world! God, he's fucking horrible!"

The others were cracking up; I was shushing them, saying, "Quiet! I wanna hear what he's saying!" Pretty soon he figured out that I was the guy he was talking about and spent the next hour hanging on me, going, "Dude! I didn't mean it!" B-b-b-but YES YOU DID and that's what was interesting about it! I wanted to hear more! Instead, he told me a story about how he and a friend were standing in line for a show at the Metro when someone walked by that the friend thought looked like Steve Shelley. Lloyd said, "That's not Steve Shelley--Steve Shelly is a big fat fuck." Then the man standing in front of them in line turned around and said, "I'm Steve Shelley." Which proved that this guy does this kind of thing ALL THE TIME!

A week after this happened, Keith Harris called me to tell me about a piece of fanmail I got at the Reader: someone had filled an entire side of an index card w/spleen, invective, and near-psychotic ramblings because I'd had the gall to criticize Dead Prez for being racists (specifically their comments about how white women are only good for sucking dick). It was very chilling, and of course Keith said, "You know, this person really writes with a lot of energy! It really moves." Thanks, pal!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

("being racists" is overstated, actually--make that "making racist comments")

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos, maybe the guy mistook you for Peter Margasak?

hstencil, Monday, 7 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

no, he mistook me for me!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan began typing all of our names into Voice.com's search engine to see what we'd written recently

This sounds like the worst party ever!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

'Lloyd' = John D. in disguise.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, Matos, I was just trying to make a funny. I always liked your stuff in the Reader, myself.

hstencil, Monday, 7 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

A few weeks ago I was at my friend Dan's party in Brooklyn, and it was winding down.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

You bet!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

For the record, you didn't write anything about Dead Prez's "racism," just their "foul dismissal of white women." And that guy's letter was top-shelf vitriol!

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah when the party was full-on going they were typing way cooler things into search engines -- y'know, like "Jenna Jameson".

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

there were like 8 people left; I got there really late (had been at a party w/Tracer and his roommate for the roommate's birthday) so missed out on most of the fun, but Lloyd made up for it big-time.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

that was lame even by Sterling Clover standards

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ouch.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(sorry, Sterl, it was too easy to pass up. now you owe me, natch.)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that catching-someone-attempting-to-make-personal-attacks-behind-their-back-when-unbeknownst-to-them-you're-right-there-in-the-room-with-them shit. I was at a coffee shop a few months back and overheard someone reading a little blurb from a local paper about my band: "they sound like 'System of a Down, Primus, and Eminem'? Ew, God, how could a band possibly get any worse?" I just giggled.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 7 April 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

*although now that I think about it that's not really so much a personal attack*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 7 April 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Less amusing... that happened to me with someone I thought was a friend. They told lies about me on a list I wasn't on, only someone forwarded the postings to me!

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 7 April 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You gotta admit the fella has a point, tho- and that's not an insult to your band, it's an insult to some writah's *vision* of yr band.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 7 April 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey! What if Nick was happy with that description?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Some anti-ILM Weblog Superpals (like two guys or so) keep posting things about how I need to be beaten up and how if they came to the city I lived they'd like totally kick my ass and how I'm a shitty writer and their indie rock dicks are throbbing and horrific and have HR Giger teeth that will tear out my throat*. I think the motive is either my public mockery of Pitchfork or (b) their assumption that I'm friends with Jess.

*actually they didn't say that.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Last week, some photo student came into my office with a portfolio.
He was flipping through the newspaper, looking at some of the photos, when he singled out a portrait I had shot of a local soccer player, saying "at least the spirit was there."
I still don't know what the fuck that means.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

any mail is good for me - even hatemail. anything beats the constant penis mockery.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only ever copped hate mail from the Sultan Ahmet on Essex road, (very good kebab house), I metioned eithe ron ile or in my blog that they once had a quite disparaging nick name and that they weren't as good as the yeni guzelgun on kingsland rd. Unfortunately I can't find the mail because it was quite funny.

I also think that they are the reason I got so much Turkish spam in my old email address.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

jw, how many stalkers have you had in your entire time here? Because I can think of two off the top of my head (both in that email) but could probably think of some more if I tried.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

I had some off board stalkers finding ILX.

JW (ex machina), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

Jinx, you owe Ambrose an apology. In the UK the word he used is the equivalent spelling of *snickers* as indeed most people who read a bit widely in books and online already knew.

People who've insulted me online for whatever reasons NEVER do so once they've met me. Which says more than I could.
