what do you do if you need to connect to more than 26 network drives?

alright, so I mean, a floppy drive, a hard drive, a CD-ROM drive and (since there's not normally a drive B:) 22 network drives. I have most of the letters mapped and I need most of them most days. Is there any alternative, other than disconnecting from one and connecting to another on the same letter?

buy a mac/run linux

I knew it wasn't going to be long before someone suggested using a different operating system! But just suppose you can't or don't want to.

sorry, I honestly don't know although I have wondered. Can you map drives to AA:\ or similar.

Ed (dali), Monday, 7 April 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that's exactly what I was wondering!

There is no way.

which is a bit pathetic isn't it?

welcome to computing 80s style

You'll be wanting to address more than 640K of memory next.

Just don't map the drives. I mean, you don't need to, do you. (Unless you're some sociopath still running Novell under MS-Dos) With all modern Windows applications you can use the \\hostname\share format to access shares.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 7 April 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

but that is tedious, mapping dives means that they're there all the time, and you don't need to remmeber hostnames/ip addresses.

Ed (dali), Monday, 7 April 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely it's easier to remember hostnames than drive letters? Eh, if you have trouble remembering hostnames or IPs set up a few shortcuts on your desktop or something.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 7 April 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I can call mapped drives whatever I like.

Ed (dali), Monday, 7 April 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

XP I don't think has mapping to letters, just to named folders in the network places folder. Just like on a mac.
