Mohammad al-Sahaf is my new hero

Did anyone see the wonderfully entertaining Mohammad al-Sahaf, the Iraqi Minister for Misinformation, giving his press conference this morning from the roof of a Baghdad hotel?

There he was, insisting that the British and American donkey imperialist wankers were sick in the head and lying, because THERE WERE NO AMERICAN TROOPS IN BAGHDAD OH NO NOT AT ALL, and in the background you could clearly see American tanks trundling past, with American soldiers waving hello.

When this is all over, I want Mr al-Sahaf brought to the UK and given his own television show.

It's a really sad spectacle with 1,000x more pathos than all of the "human interest" stories running on CNN every 20 minutes.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

He's the Iraqi Tommy Flanagan.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It may be funny, but perhaps his family is being held under duress (sp?) or something else like that, behind the scenes. It would be hard for him to keep a straight face, unless he knew what would happen if he didn't. He looks scared lately.

stephen. s (yaye), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

he certainly looks scared these days. they could have chosen a better back drop; sans tanks could have worked.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I just can't figure the guy out. As was said, it's all sorta sad.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite all that, you must admire his determination to pretend the Iraqis actually have have a chance in hell of winning ---despite the saber clearly being held to his throat.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

He's like the overeager opening act who runs on much too long, but you don't have the heart to wish they would leave the stage. You're just kind of hoping it doesn't happen with a cane.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

best international comedian of the year (so far). I spotted his comedy star potential right from the off, it's only at the weekend that news articles began to recognise this.

The amount of claptrap he comes out with, strange use of language, pitch of voice, the accent - all add up to some strange (un)real comedy act.

Has Saturday Night Live weighed in?
Dang, I wish I had cable sometimes.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Kim Jong Il and the DPRK state press beat him by miles, come on. Just because Sahaf gets all the TV time...

How dare you even suggest that Iraq is not winning this war. We all know that American propaganda is just that, actually they don't even have any troops in Iraq! It's true, they're all in Hawaii making a remake of Blue Hawaii for Fox (hence the worldwide shortage of swimming trunks and hair gel -- and don't tell me you haven't noticed this!). Those so-called 'tanks' that you saw in the background are really just very well disguised weapons of mass destruction (oh and one of them might be Saddam Hussein - master of disguise). Everyone knows that he and his senior ministers often dress up as tanks, just for a laugh, although I hear that they all complain if they have to be on the bottom. It's a variant of the Chinese New Year Dragon and everyone in Iraq absolutely loves it when lollies come hurtling out of the guns. And the presidential palace with gold fittings is, in fact, a hospital for three-legged Iraqi children. It's true! A curse on the motherless goats of your forefather CJ!

Also, anyone who even dares suggest that the idea of a 'motherless goat' is unfeasible is clearly misinformed. You see, the evil megalomaniac Richard Branson and the US government have for some years now been genetically engineering goats with the genetic material from Mr Tumnus (of that brutal Narnian Regime) to produce cloned and therefore 'motherless'goats that fart deadly chemical gases. I heard that CJ can trace her family line back to the original Mr Tumnus - hence the cloven feet. ;-)

Did he call bush a midget or was that saddam? And who insulted who's moutasche.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The moustache insult was said by the Iraqi delegate to that recent Arab conference. After one of the Kuwaitis accused him of being an infidel, he shouted back: "Shut up you monkey! Curse be upon your moustache!"

Mo's fame is spreading - today on Jeremy Vine's prog on Radio 2 listeners were being asked to email in suggestions re "What Job Should Mohammad al-Sahaf have after the war". Favourite suggestions appeared to be script writer for Jim Davidson, and Press Spokesperson for Man U (and possibly Leeds United as well).

I think he'd work well in a double act with Antoine de Caunes, myself.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

such a shame they'll probably find a way to try him as a war criminal...

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Spokesperson for the World Ostrich Society.

Actually he could probably do very well as one of those 'lifestyle guru' types convincing people to utilise their true potential. If I were Tony Robbins I would be watching my back.

Nitsuh, hehe: "I hope no one will take this the wrong way, but I have to say I'm endlessly entertained by the ability of "rogue nations" to just talk endless shit about everything and anything: I suppose once you're in such a situation there's just no reason to bother with the normal tact and protocol of international relations. The Taliban and the Hussein sons in particular were/are great at this: I almost wished they'd spoken English as a first language and listened to lots of hip-hop, because some of their choicest rhetoric really would translate almost as "all you bitches can lick my ass.""

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

He should write lyrics for Slayer.

Imagine "Our initial assessment is that they will all die!" in that heavy metal voice.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

M A-S seems to have disappeared along with the rest of Saddam's regime in the capital. Also some news reports suggest that he was taking his cues from Qusay Hussein, who himself was receiving falsely optimistic (or just plain false) reports from military types: "We've beaten back the infidels at the airport," etc.

A Times Op-Ed today reports this joke making the rounds in Cairo:

"When Al-Sahhaf died they sent 63 angels. Three angels asked him questions about his life. The other 60 tried to convince him he was dead."

He later surrendered to American troops but was released after being deemed insignificant.

This is terribly sad in a way, but better than being sent to Guantanamo Bay or stuck on trial, hein? And now he's a proper MEDIA HO and everything.
