I'm interested (not obsessively or anything) w/ taking testosterone - I'm a 27year old woman, don't want to cross gender identification - interested in the boundaries and so on though - I heard recently that testosterone can be prescribed to help relieve menstrual problems and mine are annoying me more and more. I just wanted to get an idea on a non-specialist forum (ie like not on Trans forums etc though I'm sure such places would also be helpful) and see if anyone knows anything, maybe you have some experience even just through your acquantances...I really want to know if taking small amounts wld have any effect on fertility (I want to get pregnant in abt 1 - 2 years time) and I really want to know if what is marketed as progesterone as a treatment for PMS is a form of testosterone (I'm a little confused - even after looking up progesterone on dictionary.com

Sorry if this query is too vague or odd.

I understand many contraceptives have progesterone so I will pre-empt suggestions that I take those by saying I don't want to and never have been on the pill - it's complicated!

if you're wanting to get pregnant in 1-2 years, i wouldn't risk it. any mucking with hormones when you don't really need to should be avoided. don't underestimate their power! (i'm not speaking from personal, my own somatic experience, btw.)

okay but what are the drawbacks of taking extra testosterone? (extra because women do produce testosterone just in case anyone doesn't know that). I mean, in small amounts, considering I could consider the "male stuff" developments if there are any an advantage or not a disadvantage? (though yes it seems with hopes to get pregnant this is perhaps to stay in the realm of theory only).

I've heard of testosterone supplementation being prescribed for women, but only to treat sexual dysfunction. I assume you have a doctor from whom you expect to get a prescription; have you asked her/him? Also, why are you passing on OCs? They are known to help with menstrual problems.

What kinds of menstruation/PMS problems are you having? There are different diagnoses that can be had depending on the symptoms you may be experiencing at this time.

I had severe menstrual/PMS problems for about three years before I got some help, and ever since then they've died down significantly. On occasion I will experience what I experienced before, but that's only very occasionally and is too rare for me to complain about.

Erm, in other words -- see a gynecologist or two or twenty before you self-treat. If your gynecologist won't or can't help, then see an endocrinologist -- believe it or not, the two specialities have more in common than you may think. If you still think they're talking bollocks, then self-treat.

Good luck!!

six years pass...

I frigging hope so cause I really can't deal with this anymore. I am tied to the bed for at least 24 hrs and sometimes more. I'm so sick, nauseous,... Thank god I don't have a job where they frown upon staying in bed for 24 hrs. (I'm self-employed.)
