i dont know of any reason to not simply exterminate them completely.
do they fill a special slot in the food chain? they may feed the odd spider hanging round the place, but apart from that why the hell do they exist other than to bother me every time i go outside?

i hate the way they start humming when you turn the light off to sleep. i always leave a juicy arm out so it'll take its fill and fuck off and stop humming. you can even hear that noise through earplugs, i discovered last night.

Do they pollenate blood?

They're trying their best to exterminate them in my city. Mosquitoes are really plentiful here and carry West Nile virus and other fun diseases like that. I guess their purpose is to kill people and animals (population control) and to serve as food for birds.

Indian legend has it that at one point, all the animals of the world kingdom minus humans got together to discuss whether they should, once and for all, lash back at this horrid, horrid species called "homo sapiens". There was a vast majority of the animals who agreed to exterminate the humans, but the vote had to be unanimous. And the entire motion was vetoed by the mosquitoes because "Oh, but humans are so TASTY and YUMMY" and hence we must thank the mosquitoes for our existence today.

It also justified why we should all buy praying mantises as house pets.

There's a West-African story about why mosquitoes buzz in people's ears, does anyone remember how it goes?

I had an untraceable once in my room for about a week a few years ago. It got me round the ankles and legs about a dozen times. This is probably responsible for my phobia about leaving windows open.
