Filed under Culture: Television because I've only seen the TV version, though you comic guys can feel free to talk about those picture-book thingies you like. (Comics, I guess they're called.)

I, umm, really enjoyed the run of the show on MTV.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

when i was cleaning out my parents attic this xmas, i found i had the whole run on the end of a vhs tape and at the very end there was an old episode of 120 mins with videos from the rollins band, shudder to think, and the bad brains. it was still better than the maxx stuff.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Strong words from a guy who taped it! I dunno, I think I last saw it about four/five years ago, and I was enjoying it then -- should I avoid looking at it ever again for fear of realizing some crapness therein?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

haha dude i was like 17, whaddya want?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe 18

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes i think i was completely insane until i hit 21

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i bought the VHS a few years back, i thought the show was fantastic - seemingly innovative animation techniques at times, merging CGI 3d with 2d and painted backdrops etc. - the story was a bit muddled and the script a bit cack-handed and VERY drawn out/re-iterating at times but generally fun, lots of cool ideas and i liked the city/outback crossover thing - and the girl was hot

The Maxx was fun - I liked the cartoon better than the comics for the bits that intersected, and the comics that continued after the cartoon had ended better than the previous ones. I almost picked it up on video the other day, but it was a previously-viewed tape from Blockbuster and I assumed it would be all-but-unviewable.

I have a feeling the animation would be pretty dated now. A lot of the animated stuff on MTV at the time just screamed "look how goddamn timely we are, we're rockin the 90s" (HBO's Spawn looks that way to me, too, but I didn't like it when it was new, so it might not be a good example).

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

watch out buddy or yr gonna be 22

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

haha what was that awful cartoon on mtv about the old men (brothers?) with the new bodily functions every week?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Brother Grunt ... I think. They were like monks or something? My brother watched it, the bastard.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

god it was awful. i think it premered in my freshman year of college and my idiot roommate insisted on watching it.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

what is dated in animation terms?? and even if it was this is not really a problem. do Beavis & Butthead or Ren & Stimpy seem dated now? maybe so but does it make them any less enjoyale? well i doubt i'd find B&B at all funny now but MTV were repeating all the Ren & Stimpys in the UK last year and i found them funnier than ever which was unexpected

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

beavis and butthead weren't going for stunning state of the artness. they kept a pretty lo-fi look through the whole series but i'd wager that the first season would still look pretty bad compared to when the budget improved a few seasons later. ren and stimpy were going for a "classic" look, so no.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

what is dated in animation terms??

The same thing it is in any other: if I look at it and can't get past being forcibly aware of when it was made, esp. if it was trying very hard to be stylistically distinct, it's dated. Just like comedies that harvest contemporary pop culture for their humor become dated more quickly than others -- sometimes it's a horrible thing, sometimes it makes it funny in different ways later (it can be one of the fun parts of watching SNL reruns), sometimes it has no effect.

And also what jess said.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

well in any case the '90s comicbook-ness' of The Maxx is no real flaw, my only prob with it is there is too much narrative, the characters talk to themselves and to each other TOO MUCH about what they think is going on and what is actually going on - too much telling and not enough showing perhaps

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the first season of B&B looks absolutely horrendous compared to the later episodes, the movie and indeed King Of The Hill no doubt.

Ren & Stimpy was consistent in its inconsistency i guess - how many years did it run for?

and re The Maxx i think you're being too harsh on criticising it for trying too hard to be of its time - i appreciate the experimental aspect of that, obv. R&S was experimental too but always rooted in that mock 50s style.

does Aeon Flux seem dated now? it had a unique and consistent look which perhaps retains its freshness whereas The Maxx was amalgamating maybe too many styles and i guess this couldve annoyed some, but i thought it was a bold attempt

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ren & Stimpy ran until about 1995, I think.

Which reminds me - have the new episodes of Ren & Stimpy been broadcast yet in the US?

Chriddof (Chriddof), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not positive the animation would be dated, just said it might be -- I haven't seen it since MTV was still rerunning it (which was probably only a year or so after it was new).

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Aeon Flux stuff is still okay. I have a liquid TV DVD lying around somewhere, and the AF is the best of it by a long shot. Funny how I didn't really think it was all that great at first, but ten years on it's easily ahead of the rest.

The Aeon Flux ppl are now doing 'Reign: The Conqueror' on Adult Swim - I find it unwatchable (style that is great in 2 min. nonsensical doses != a fine aesthetic for the retelling of Alexander The Great in thirty minute chunks)

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the point i was going to make until my i accidentally wiped my own post was that its an interesting point how the term 'dated' can mean 'trying too hard to be post-modern/trendy/cutting edge or using 'too much technology because you can' as opposed to the original definition being more to do with being technically restricted. i mean The Maxx IS dated if you apply the former definition...

either way, i prefer the animation style and look of The Maxx to that of Aeon Flux, although AF has the superior overall concept maybe - and i for one WOULD actually be interested to see if the film ever happens

six years pass...

mtv2 is showing this as part of "mtv legit" on friday nights. they heavily advertised it and so far, in the past hour, they've shown literally three minutes.

I am sad to say my fashion sense from ages 18-20 involved trying to cop Julie's style.

Please MTV, for the love of god, get this shit sorted out on DVD before the medium dies. Do you have to be promoting a horrible live-action movie to be bothered, like with Aeon Flux? Fine. Just...do whatever you need to do. I will be WAITING.

Telephone thing, Saturday, 13 June 2009 05:30 (sixteen years ago)

I watched a DVD of The Animation Show 3 recently and for no apparent reason (except that MTV co-published the DVD) they put in that awesome 20-minute series recap that aired just before the finale. It was great and really made me hunger for a real DVD release!

I wish it was available before christmas, it would have made a great gift.

So glad it'll be available! I've got bad rips from the VHS tapes and they're a damn shame.

i love you too, the maxx

three years pass...

I just went looking for this for the first time in years, and discovered they're streaming the whole series at liquidtelevision.com. Already watched the first two, it's nice to see it again. A little hokier than I remember, but I still really like the style.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 2 January 2013 03:22 (twelve years ago)

this wound up being one of the more batshit comics of the 90s. which isn't to say it was good.

packt like phoebe cates's dad in a chimney (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Wednesday, 2 January 2013 03:32 (twelve years ago)

I never read the comic, and I've never seen the whole series. I caught maybe 2/3 of it at different times, out of order, which I'm sure made it seem more enigmatic than it actually is. But I've remembered it fondly for years and always wanted to see it all.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 2 January 2013 04:03 (twelve years ago)

probably my favorite comic ever, I fondly remember when the issues started coming out once every 2 or 3 months and they'd be like 48 pages+ and very dense and strange

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 04:05 (twelve years ago)

I've always been a sucker for Sam Kieth. Love the comic and the show. They released the animated series as a burn on demand DVD - you can buy it from Amazon.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 05:06 (twelve years ago)

I really love the covers Kieth did for other comics, the Batman ones especially.
