jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

tony says it all with *blorf*

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. If you're going to go...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Deep fried Bounties are good. And Snowballs. And Snickers.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

*shudder* I think I'll stick with the "sweet bagel" that supposedly is available somewhere near UVA -- a split (and toasted?) doughnut, served with a schmear of ice cream.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing is they're really nice though.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Fatburgers are constructed so that there aren’t really condiments that stick to the bun, unless you get mayo or chili or whatever. The mustard is glopped on with the relish, which is all under the tomato/pickle layer which in turn is under the fried egg (yes, he ordered the egg!).

FUCK

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Thee worst thing abt thee "fat creme combo" is that I can imagine what it tastes like.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

that's gross, but it's got nothing on that deep-fried-ground-beef-stuffed-pizza thingy :-P

ron (ron), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Here in the south, if it can be fried, it will be. It amazes me that the person who came up with that thing isn't actually here. It also frightens me, because I was planning to move -away- from the Place Where Everything Is Fried.

martin (mushrush), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

First, you need to get the mars bar good and lubed up...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

SICK WRONG PERVERTED BASTARD.

Thank you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

We just used to see half eaten ones outside the local chippy. So I assume they are bloody awful.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

What Ned said.

smee (smee), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone ever tried deep-frying a pat of butter in oil so hot that it seals in the lardy goodness straight away?

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Deep-frying is a pretty effective way of tricking children into eating vegetables. With the aid of batter & oil, I manage to get my 4-year-old son to eat squash, calliflower, (fried green) tomatoes, yams, etc.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw an electronic billboard for fried Twinkies when I was in Vegas.

The south, they do fry everything, but fried okra (just a little corn meal on it) and fried green tomatoes (ditto) are two of the best things ever. But in general I follow Satchel Paige's dictum about fried foods. I'd rather be forced to smoke a whole pack of Lucky Strikes than eat a corn dog...

Jess Hill (jesshill), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Fried Twinkies are so much tastier than regular Twinkies, though, honest. (I haven't had them deep-fried, only pan-fried.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

For the sake of honesty, "tastier" should probably be read simply as "edible."

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched somone eat a battered Cadbury's Cream Egg a couple of months back. It wasn't pretty.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone had a "loco moco" in Hilo, Hawaii? It's a bed of white rice, topped with a hunk of spam (or sausage, or a hamburger patty, etc.), topped with a fried hug, and smothered in gravy.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

fried hug haha!

fried egg

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Fried pickles are pretty tasty.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Slluurrpppp.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I totally want a deep-fried hug.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too, apparently.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like the kind of hug uncles and clowns are arrested for.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Thems is referred to as "frickles" in these parts, Carey. And that "slluurrppppp" is TOO MUCH THE SEXY!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I could go for one of those deep-fried hugs (innocent or otherwise) right now myself.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't want no greasy, stanky deep-friend hug

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha deep-FRIED hug

fried

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

jess in sounding like a hippie SHOCKAH!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I love friend pickles and friend okra. Yum!

Sarah Mclusky (coco), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

We're like >thisclose< to "topping a deep friend's 'mars bar,'" if the thread goes the right way.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I just ate a few tiny pieces of chocolate to tide me over until NA and I make chocolate cake tonight with chocolate frosting of course.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

a greasy deep friend's 'mars bar'...could be interesting indeed.

but chocolate cake sounds good too.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

there was this place in dunedin called The Phoenix that did deep fried moro bars (and lets get this straight: moro is better than mars, okay). i think deep fried moro bars may be my favouritest food in the entire world, but my health is thankful the Phoenix shut down.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The answer to the thread question, which you are all dancing around like deranged harunobu, is obviously "deep-fried double cream".

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

If you plunge a Mars bar into boiling oil like it were potatoes or calimari or something, wouldn't it just *melt* ??

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Possibly, but the batter coating protects it from doing that. In that it melts within the batter, after the batter has solidified, which it does almost instantly on contact with the frier. So the end result is a gooey mulch of caramel, nougat and cholocate encased in lightly crisped batter. Num num.

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn the founding fathers. Damn them. Taxation without representation > representation without fried caramel.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It is U&K that I hunt down some cholocate.

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

comes in contact with the friar.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What's a moro bar?

I don't eat any of that--Mars, Milky Way, Snickers. Yuck. The only good candy bar is a Zagnut.

Jess Hill (jesshill), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I haven't eaten ice cream in ten years. I don't eat any of it. Every once in a while we'll buy some Oreos and feel bad for about three days. It's all really, really bad for you, I'm sorry to say. I do like real shortbread. My grandmother used to make cobblers, the real thing, and rhubarb pie, and we'd have boiled custard, almost frozen, with a little warmup of whiskey and a slice of homemade coconut cake, for Christmas. So fuck a Mars bar (like Marianne Faithfull).....(sorry, couldn't resist)....

Jess Hill (jesshill), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, Don't be so hard on yourself! What kind of life do you lead without Oreos and ice cream? Do you hate fun?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone ever tried deep-frying a pat of butter in oil so hot that it seals in the lardy goodness straight away?

It's called Chicken Kiev, but you need to surround the butter with chicken and mulched matzoh meal.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

God chicken kievs are nice.

sarah who is hungry, Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"mulched matzoh meal" - is that a Suzy way of saying breadcrumbs, or is it an Ed special?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, Don't be so hard on yourself! What kind of life do you lead without Oreos and ice cream? Do you hate fun?

-- Sarah McLUsky

I love fun but these days I never seem to have any. I like Oreos and ice cream, but my family's history of heart disease and diabetes indicated to me I needed to cut back on everything (I quit smoking 4 years ago too, I'm proud to say I'm the only person I know who's ever done it successfully) while I'm still relatively (30) young...

Jess Hill (jesshill), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, sorry Jess. I thought you were just doing so you wouldn't gain weight. Diabetes is scary. Bravo!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

RECIPE ALERT!

Mark, you really need to use matzoh meal that has been lightly browned in a frying pan NOT breadcrumbs. Brown these and put in a ziploc bag or whatever and set to one side (I also add paprika, salt and pepper to the crumbs in minute amounts). You get the butcher to do you chicken breasts with NO BONES apart from the upper wing, with the breast meat pounded flat (otherwise I take it home and do the flattening with a pestle myself). For the filling, mix a huge lump of soft salty butter with chopped parsley and minced garlic; wrap the chicken around it so that there is no point for the butter to escape (the logical construction presents itself when you make this). Chill the stuffed breasts for an hour, then eggwash them and slip each into the matzoh baggie to thoroughly coat. Whack the coated Kievs into a 200C oven for about 45 minutes to an hour for the really HUGE ones.

This is better than any shop's Kiev when done properly. Oven cooking is good but if I could take it to Top Nosh for a deep-fry, even better. I serve it with steamed fennel with smoked pancetta pieces or a weird Minnesota rice pilaf containing 1/4 wild rice, fried in pan which has just been used on pancetta, with the pancetta in question crumbled into the rice.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

-- Sarah McLusky

I'm too nervous to be fat, I'm always running around--only two speeds for me, asleep or very up...

Jess Hill (jesshill), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

just reading this thread makes my teeth hurt.

Now where in LA can I find a deep fried mars bar???

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, DIY.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

We shall ponder this mystery tonight or something. The Land of Nod are from the UK, we'll badger them for ideas.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ts: the mini chicken Kievs or the big ones?? you can't get them in the U.S, fact-fans! suzy you are the mostest!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The big 'uns, Tracer. Mini-Kievs seemed touched by the hand of Tyson eg. processed chickenmulch. Bleurgh.
