My workplace provides subsidised 10 min massages in worktime once a week. I don't know what technique they use - it is just back, arms and neck with a focus on rsi problem areas - but it seems to work, though I only notice the effects for about 20mins afterwards.

My great Aunt used to do reflexology and it was wonderful. But that could be just because I love her. Reiki sounds like a rip off cos they don't actually touch you.

I live in the massage therapist capital of the world! and I'm NOT COMPLAINING! Much competition here, therefore decent prices, too.

I got one (via a birthday gift certificate) at this massage school, and even though it was done by students practicing, I thought it rocked, so I may not be the best massage connoisseur.. I just had the one where I lied face down the face up, and they used the long side of the arm & fingers to iron out the knots, etc. i don't know which one this is..

Some Reiki they do touch you, but it's not massage. It's also not a rip-off coz it works.

Any massage is good massage!

I love how in red-light districts, "Thai Massage" = "Cock Massage"

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i have very strong and very personal opinions on reiki that do not in any way include a belief in its effectiveness, and a very strong belief that peddlers of this "treatment" should be hung, drawn and quartered.

one year passes...
I love getting a massage. Do you?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean an actual massage, perverts.

The best one I had was at a spa in Indiana. It was amazing.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes... I get a deep swedish on occasion. Greatest thing ever. Often better than sex. Seriously.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could treat myself to one now.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I also had a massage and then a seaweed body wrap when we were in Belize. I've never felt anything quite like it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i just had a professional massage for our anniversary, it was nice but lasted too long (75 minutes!). i tend to feel stress more in my stomach than my muscles, also, people standing behind me kind of creeps me out, so it's not something i feel like i'd want all the time. my wife gets them monthly because her back and shoulders are habitually messed up.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

So you finally gave in.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You should count yourself FORTUNATE that you got to be massaged for that long!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the man doing it had no pupils

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh it was a man? haha I always ask for a woman. You know...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

he was not so much a man, more like an alien with NO PUPILS and giant BLUE MARBLES for eyes. also, they didn't really give us options on gender.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

David Bowie gave you a massage? WOW!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, that's funny because Kyle probably dreams about that exact scenario every night...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps my biggest indulgence since becoming more-or-less gainfully employed is a massage every other week. I found a guy I really like who does a combination of myofascial release, craniosacral, neuromuscular, and deep tissue. I have no idea what any of that means (nor proper spelling), all I know is it feels great and really helps my cranky lower back. Oh, and my health insurance gives me a discount, so it is less pricey than one might think.

quincie, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? How did you get your health insurance to do that? I have back/leg trouble...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

no, that's my wife's dream.

this guy looked quite a bit like Marshall Applewhite but with a beard.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was about to say.. the only other possibility would be getting a massage from Edgar Winters, and that's, um, a far more awkward thought in every respect.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Come on, get a free rub!"

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@ml, I have pretty standard BlueCross/Blue Sheild insurance that has a discount program for select "Complementary/Alternative" therapies like massage, acupuncture, etc. It isn't a very big discount, but better than nothing! I just chose one of the CMTs with whom the insurance company has a contract, and after showing my insurance card I pay a reduced rate (11 bucks/15 minutes = $44/hour massage, whereas in my area they are usually $65/hr and up).

I think a lot of health insurance policies have something similar; you just have to hunt it down.

quincie, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
Head one, at posh hair place. Felt like box had been opened and brain could drift out at will. So amazing...

Got back and looked in mirror and realised that I really liked my old hair and only booked this because I'd been to snowed in with work to actually remember this. But still worth money.

Blowdry!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 25 October 2004 08:18 (twenty years ago)

I love getting massages. It's been a while though (with the exception of all the free ones I get at home). I just wish they would let you go to sleep at the end.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago)

A combination of Tweena and thai is doiung no end of good for me at the moment.

Ed (dali), Monday, 25 October 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

seven years pass...

surprisingly I find that giving yourself a massage, if it's your upper back/collarbone area that is tight, feels pretty good

My sweetie is a fully licensed massage practitioner working towards her therapist certification. Why yes I am smug.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 22 January 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

This thread reminds me I need to go back to my physio and get her to do the whatever it is she does that "unlocks" a spasmed muscle in my right shoulderblade. It was all fixed up, and then I fscked it up again y'day by standing on a table cleaning a ceiling fan looking up at the roof, ow.

Theres a new massage place in my local shops Im tempted to pop into for a long foot massage as a treat.

I had my first massage last year for my birthday and it was aaaaamazing. I felt like a walking snuggly blanket.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 23 January 2012 04:58 (thirteen years ago)

We get them at work once a month, one of the lads here's wife is a massage/new age health person of some kind, she does back and shoulders and arms, I wish it was more than once a month!

Dreamland, Tuesday, 20 May 2014 18:08 (eleven years ago)

And genitalia based massage

Dreamland, Tuesday, 20 May 2014 18:09 (eleven years ago)

one year passes...

after months of sitting at a desk non-stop my shoulders and back are knackered, super tight and heavy, does anyone have any particular kind of massage recommendations?

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 10 October 2015 13:23 (nine years ago)

The missus (a massage therapist) suggests deep tissue massage and acupressure. She sees desk-bound related problems a lot apparently...

めんどくさかった (Matt #2), Saturday, 10 October 2015 18:54 (nine years ago)

thanks, i'll look into it
