Why can't I transfer files?

I can't transfer files to people who aren't using iChat, and it's irking me.

What is going on? My firewall is off. Their firewalls are off. If they're using iChat it works fine but if they're using AIM then it doesn't work at all. Doesn't seem to matter if they're on a Mac or a PC.

Grrr. Advice appreciated.

file transfer over IM i have found to be dodgy at best. not that i've tried all that many times, but i'd say i'm battin about .333 which is great baseball but lousy computer

I have the exact same problem with Trillian, if that helps troubleshooting at all.

I have investigated with a few possibilites (Sean C has helped) and I've decided it's the work of the great Satan.

I can't understand it. Messenger works fine but AIM always craps out, saying my firewall is on (it isn't). AIM LIX.
