Am I fooling anyone at work...

By really self-consciously clicking off of ILX EVERY time someone passes by my computer? I know it's crap, but it's almost an involuntary reaction.

alt and tab, alt and tab, always with the alt and tab

chris (chris), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Chris!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

we could post more images of pie charts and graphs if that would help

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be great! Only, right now I work in a university assessments office...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

we could post more images of students if *that* would help

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the kind of students who do the glamour modelling on the side to get them through college?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

hey I'll have you know that those pictures of me are ART

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I do the same thing. Well, I switch virtual desktops, but it's almost the same thing.

The problem is that I tend to switch from ILX to an IRC window, so it still looks like I'm not doing any work.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

at least ILX has a white background, so it *looks* like what I'm supposed to be looking at. unlike sinistah.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oops one two many soliduses (solidi?)

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only one that hears chris's "alt & tab" post like a little old Jewish gent?

smee (smee), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

nop

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

phew, for a minute there I thought I was losing it....

smee (smee), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Robster's Top Five Methods for Wasting Company Time and Resources:
1. Only look at sites that are mostly black text on white backgrounds (like ILX!)
2. Keep the window small so whatever you're meant to be working on is prominent.
3. Have a laptop - more difficult for other people to see the screen.
4. Where possible, have a job role that includes techy stuff your boss doesn't understand so they don't know what should be on your screen.
5. Cultivate a reputation for slacking off and wasting time so you've less to lose (note: may be damaging for long-term career prospects).

robster (robster), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I score on 1, 4 *and* 5!

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My boss is clueless. Mostly, I'm worried about pissing off the guy I share an office with. Last week, I couldn't finish an assignment by deadline, so it was handed over to him. Five minutes later, I was writing an important but non-work-related e-mail, which he noticed and said, "Is that why you can never get anything done around here, and I have to do it for you?" Ouch.

On the other hand, he's in a great, sorta-well-known power-pop band, and is otherwise a nice guy.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The great thing about working at home : I am in my bedroom, on ILX, while watching Dawson's Creek syndicated, in my underwear, waiting for a fax before I can do anything else work related.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine has a theory that Internet in the workplace is partially responsible for global economic woes, what with declining productivity and all that. It sounds a little silly -- but everyone I know surfs the web and e-mails friends at work. Are we ruining civilization??

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Before the internet, I used to read at work.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

When I had a job without internet access, I used to read at work too. Mind you, I did work in a library.

(best memory: reading Breakfast At Tiffany's during a quiet Sunday afternoon shift on the returns desk)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaymc, I think now we just have something else to do when we waste time at work, instead of just staring at a wall or something like they used to do.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My mum read all of emembrance of Things Past over a summer when she was a receptionist at NBC in the '60s.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What Carey said, only I don't have a proper job (and had zero hours of work today :/). Though now I am actually showered and fully dressed - not shaved though, just cos I can. Not shave, I mean.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I too instinctively close whatever I am looking at. This isn't fooling anyone. I even close legitimate work screens, it is so ingrained. We have an open plan office, so this results in a lot of wasted time.

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

whats the time scale in terms of starting a new job and then semi-blatently fucking around. how long should i have waited to have settled in before i feel like i could do what i want. at the moment i left 3 days, before caning the net all day. im guessing this is a bit too soon....?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow Sarah that's brazen (reading a book at work I mean)! A few friend and I were wondering what people did to waste time at work before the internet and couldn't come up with much. Have we discussed this?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i've only recently started checking personal email at work - and i've been there 8 months! i don't even always read the mails, just check to see if i got anything, and then close the browser. my job is actually techy, but i even get paranoid looking for work-related stuff. i'm just shit-scared of getting caught - all the top management and ceo, cfo etc. are on my floor, and at any given moment, it is possible that they will walk by and SEE THAT I AM WASTING TIME!

i long for the days when i had no problem internetting while at work, but i think my current workplace really frows on this (without them ever explicitly saying so) i am thinking of subtle ways that will help me find out their "policy", but i'm not really sure how to go about it. i think i just work better if i have small breaks in between work stuff.

sand.y, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It's weird the way different cultures of acceptance just evolve.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

before the net, i actually used to chat with my workmates. not anymore.
