Here's the story:

Veteran Radio broadcaster John Peel is to make his debut festival DJ appearance in the US at Turnament, UCLA in mid July.

The Turnament festival of turntablism, is taking place between 11-12 July at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus in Westwood and will see DJs from all over the USA congregate to display their skills.

Sadly John Peel will be playing a DJ set rather showing of his scratching skills as a Technics technician, but he will bare witness to such deck scientists as Kool Herc, Fog, KutMasta Kurt and GrandWizzard Theodore.

Ticket prices are $ 35 per night or $ 60 weekend pass; UCLA student discount at $20 per night and $ 35 weekend pass (only 200 available).

The full line up is
Friday 11 July: amk - Los Angeles, The Haters - San Francisco, Kool Herc - New York City, Boyd Rice - Denver, Fog - Minneapolis, Extended Organ - Los Angeles, DJ Jester - San Antonio, DJ Faust & Shortee - Atlanta, David Woodard - Los Angeles, lecture / exposition of the Brion Gysin Dreamachine.

Plus DJs Baseck & Daedelus (Los Angeles), and L?K?O & Z'EV (Tokyo
/ New York) and MC Rudy Ray Moore.

Saturday, July 12th: David Woodard - Los Angeles, lecture / exposition of the Brion Gysin Dreamachine, DJ Smallcock - Sydney, Ace & Duce - Los Angeles, KutMasta Kurt - Los Angeles, John Oswald (directed by Susanna Hood) - Toronto, Emil Beaulieau - Lowell, GrandWizzard Theodore - New York City, DJ Swamp - Los Angeles, Project Dark - London.

Plus DJs Stray & DJ Nightmare (Cambridge, UK) and John Peel (London - first-ever U.S. festival appearance) and MC Egil Aalvik!

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I'll make this one, but keep 'em coming.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't make it, either. Sorry. Vic, I will buy you a drink one of these days!

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Boyd Rice

On the decks? My head REALLY hurts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

NED HAVE YOU EVEN HEARD NON?!?!?!?! *lt;/st3rl1ng/n@bisc0>

Um, I just want to say that the Red Lion Tavern was my favorite summer restaurant in my ye olde neighborhood (93-96). The waitresses (biermaiden?) there are (were?) absolutely classic in every possible sense of the word.

I will actually be in LA but unable to make this event (I know, y'all are SOOOOO dissapointed). :-D

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, yet another reason to swelter under the heat. Then again, my curiosity may just want to know if he melts.

Would contribute to the Siverlake's coffers if I could. Anyway, knock back a few for me! The sprit's willing, but the pockets are to let.

Bring on all and any stories of debauchery....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax - I must have been your neighbor because that area was home for me from '94-'99. Having the Red Lion and Rockaway (when it was good) was grebt.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 10 April 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying, I'm trying, but I just don't know if I can get out of here, I'm so *&%&#$^%# swamped.

If I can't, y'all have my permission to call my cell phone and abuse me.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 April 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay abuse! Oh wait.

NED HAVE YOU EVEN HEARD NON?!?!?!?! *lt;/st3rl1ng/n@bisc0>

;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there by about 8.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It's 10:35 I got home from work not long ago, and I missed y'all again.

It's a conspiracy!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 11 April 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Red Lion has to be the site of the next FAP. How can you argue with a place in which the lounge/piano guy starts off (with absolutely no prompting from us) with "Walk On The Wild Side".

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

And the beer is good and plentiful, unsurprisingly, therefore a grand place. Hauling Gareth there might just have to happen, unless he's been in enough ersatz German pubs already. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

He also did the "Walk on the Wild Side" ("Valk on der Vild Shide") chorus in a German accent ("Valk on der Vild Shide") and followed it with "I'll Be Your Mirror"!

and then and then and then

four years pass...
