New movie about crank that does what several drug movies somehow manage to accomplish (I haven't even seen it yet, just making wild accusations!):

1. Mocks victims of substance abuse, while simultaneously making heroes out of them.
2. Fulfills a sadistic voyeur tendency in which people get off watching the misery of others and sometimes aspire to, in such cases where the audience is young and confused and live in a world where "bad" means "good" and vice versa.
3. Creates massive curiousity and interest in the drug, despite all the horrible shit on the screen.
4. Degenerates are cool, just don't get that fucked up. Don't worry, it'll never happen to you!
5. Check out that fuckin' soundtrack. Drugs are cool, man.

If you want to see a hilariously bad movie that fulfills all of your above requirements, check out "The Salton Sea."

"The Salton Sea" is the one with Val Kilmer, right. And he's a jazz musician/junkie in LA. That does sound like a "hilariously bad" movie. I have to see that one because Val Kilmer is a trip.

He wears a fedora and soulfully plays the trumpet in a burning house.

one year passes...
Saw it on video last night. It had its moments - specifically the stop camera/overdub/soundtrack attempts to evoke the effects of the drug. I don't know from personal experience if they've captured it, but they captured something dark and disturbing. I thought they were the really creative and exciting parts of the movie.

The mind frying effects of meth give the writers an excuse to avoid any story arc. His old girlfriend rejects him and Mickey Rourke blows up in a trailer? What does it mean in the end? The cops parody was also horrible.

Jonas was trying hard to make an *arty* movie, but underneath it was screaming conventionality. Even the cliche tweaker behavior was loathesome. He didn't even make a *point* (was he against or for drugs?). In one word: BLERGH! :-)

Did you like Rob Halford's cameo role in the porn shop?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 23 May 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a major Mickey Rourke supporter and he was great in this but aside from the costumes and the set design, this was pretty embarrassing and amateurish; kind of like a film school imitation of Requiem for a Dream. I didn't mind the silent explosion of the trailer other things were really dumb and awkward, such as Schwartzman's reunion with his ex-girlfriend near the end. The whole encounter was so unconvincing and sloppy that it seems to best explicate that the director had no clue of how to use actors in a scene.
When I read the negative reviews of this upon its release, which said that it was all style over substance, I though I might like it anyway since some style driven films can make their aesthetic strengths work for their own sake. None of the tricks in this film delivered anything particulary new or imaginitive. How did it even get produced, let alone with the involvement of such a great cast?
On the Rob Halford cameo in the porn shop, a lot of the porn references seemed to operate on the assumption that referencing porn in any way is inherently fascinating.

The problem was that all the 'style' was crap. At least Aronofsky seemed to have a point with his cutting, this tool just thought that it was fun.

It reminded me of Natural Born Killers, but without the director being in on the joke.
