My god... isn't the internet wonderful?

Goal 1
Goal 2
Goal 3
Goal 4
Goal 5

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

1 is Beckham's big lazy lob vs Wimbledon

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

2 is rthe fourth goal in the 1966 cup final

3 is a little trickier, is it Eyal Berkovic? for Man City?

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it Brazil's first goal against England in the World Cup?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

5= gazza at euro 96? was that against switzerland or scotland? i forget

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Four of those are correct.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

four = Jarzinho (i think) after lay-off from Pele in the 1970 world cup.

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Three is Maradona, is it not?

Richard Jones (scarne), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. No it's not.

Richard Jones (scarne), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was Maradona... you can see him go round Peter Shilton at the end.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Three's definitely Maradona - you can also tell by the turn when he gets the ball.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

good point, that must be right

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

four = Jarzinho (i think) after lay-off from Pele in the 1970 world cup.

It's Brazil, and it's Pele's lay-off, but it was Carlos Alberto who scored. Some would say it's the best goal of all time, and I think they might be right.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I always ge that wrong, why do I always think it's Jairzinho, especially as when I read Carlos Alberto I could hear the commentary saying his name.

So what is goal 3 then?

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched number 2 last. I like the people on the pitch.

These are great. Hopefully they'll do some more.

How about Forlan's first against Liverpool at Anfield this season (as re-performed by Karl Power on Saturday)?

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Dennis Law's Backheel ;o)

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, fair enough, Chris.

Though the only thing I like about that goal is every time I see it Denis Law looks more and more gutted. Once a red, always a red.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the internet.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

this is great

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

can we have Cantona's kung-fu attack next?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

more i'd like to see:

Owen's goal against Argentina at World Cup 98
Shearer's 2nd goal against Holland at Euro 96 (this is the greatest team-work based goal England have ever scored in my lifetime)
Matt Le Tissier goal against Newcastle, 1995
all the goals from England v Brazil at World Cup 2002

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and Van Nistelrooy's goal from the other week

and all the goals from Real vs Man U last tuesday night

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the scariest thread ever.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn right.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see the Dion Dublin goal where he was coming back from behind the goal, saw the ball unattended, and just kicked it in with a shrug.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Some would say it's the best goal of all time, and I think they might be right.

Defend that statement, without recourse to reality (IE using only the little circles from the animation).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

because it took how many passes leading up to that goal? 20? as if from that first second that first pass out of the 20 was placed, they KNEW it would result in a goal - thats the true beauty of that Alberto goal

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Shame on defender #3 in that goal

oops (Oops), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

because it took how many passes leading up to that goal? 20?

16 touches, 7 passes (shown). And most of them just looked like, y'know, football. One bad defender, and a goal.

Actually, if they're doing requests, pretty much any John Barnes 89-91

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how they've got people running onto the pitch in no 2.

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking about goal three last night, and it can't be Maradona as it's on the wrong side of the pitch for the goal in 86.

I think too much about football sometimes

chris (chris), Friday, 11 April 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you sure? That's me stumped then...

I want to see them do Giggsy's goal against Arsenal a few seasons back.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 April 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone verify this?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 April 2003 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't even see that, but cast your mind back to the game.....

He scored in the goal at the left hand side of the screen after running all the way across the top of the screen. Terry Fenwick doesn't bring him down like he should on the top right hand corner of the area, he goes past Shilton and slots it in. Scotland erupts...

chris (chris), Friday, 11 April 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Some would say it's the best goal of all time, and I think they might be right."

Defend that statement, without recourse to reality (IE using only the little circles from the animation).

I think it's the goal out of the five that comes across worst reproduced in this way. You need the particular, slightly heat-hazy delay in the picture quality from that World Cup which is so evocative. You also miss the grace of the players, the change of pace involved in the move, and the contrast between Pele's beatifully nonchalant lay-off and the power of Carlos Alberto's shot.

They actually manage to capture Maradona's goal much better, I reckon (and I'm convinced it's that, Chris - you need to get hold of a video of it. I'm sure it's the right side of the pitch.)

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 11 April 2003 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Consensus in our office is that it's Maradona's.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 11 April 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've looked at it again and of course it is, sorry. I remembered the diagram as running across the bottom of the screen as I was typin, thus thoroughly confusing myself.

White blob number 5 will be Mr Fenwick won't it?

chris (chris), Friday, 11 April 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the 1966 goal was giggsys against Arsenal.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ah but Utd were in white for that game

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember now, they are all the goals I scored against Sinister, it must be almost a year ago now!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Fenwick is 4, chickening out of the challenge on the edge of the box, because he'd already been booked and feared a sending off.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

guess these then:

1. "Interesting... very interesting !"
2. "And Lineker uses him by not using him..."
3. "3-1 !"
4. "Straight out of the textbook - and off the first page too."
5. "And the goalie's got footballing egg all over his face."

darren (darren), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The 2D match thing is just the best thing to happen to CM evah. Highlights are quite slow to load up though. What does everyone think? Agree? Disagree? Couldn't give a shit?

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, has anyone plumped for the full 90 mins in 2D yet? I'm seriously contemplating it.....

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Change 'egg' for 'pie' and the last one's Partridge. Eat my goal.

1 is Barry Davies, but I can't remember which goal.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the player not used in 2 is Peter Beardsley, or so the dark recesses of my mind are telling me.

is 3-1 the Carlos Alberto goal?

chris (chris), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Carlos Alberto goal made it 4-1, but you're probably right about the Beardsley aspect. I'm sure that's Barry Davies, too, because it has the right 'pleased with my own cleverness' tone to it.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

that "interesting......very interesting" one is driving me fucking mad! David Beckham's lob? I have no idea what it is really, that's just a guess, but I remember the quote vividly.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

3-1 Paolo Rossi then ?(I will apply my scattergun and get it right eventually)

chris (chris), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

'interesting....very interesting' is almost certainly Barry Davies, if that helps

i knew '3-1' was David Coleman

the last one is SO Big Ron heh, well i hope so for my rep's sake

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got another one for you:

"Name on the trophy!"

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

is #2 the England v Sweden match at Euro 92?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

STOP, NO MORE FRUSTRATION

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no wait, i was confused there

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i was thinking of it as 'and Lineker is being used by not being used' haha

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

This is fucking exquisite.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Is number 5 Massimo Taibi or Peter Enckleman or someone?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

6. "Jurgen Klinsmann, son of a baker... that's the icing on the cake!"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"name on the trophy" would strike me as a tyldsley line.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan - yes, but which goal?

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it Michael Owen against Arsenal in the 2001 FA Cup Final? Or Ole Gunnar Solskaer in the 99 Champions League final?

I'm rubbish at remembering commentary, mostly because I almost always watch football in noisy pubs.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Francis Lee for Derby vs his former club Man City, mid 70s?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It was United in that final, but it was the Sheringham equaliser.

I mainly remember that one because I've watched the tape several hundred times.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Francis Lee for Derby vs his former club Man City, mid 70s?

But, of course. And the 'pleased with his own cleverness' line doesn't stick on Davies in this particular instance (perhaps with #2) - it was sheer red-in-the-face half-out-of-his-seat wonder. The next line was "Look at his face! Just look at his face!" for goodness sake.

As for Tyldesley, I've a dozen quotes burned into my brain but they're all from his Radio City days, capturing Everton glories from the early-mid 80s.

The Coleman '3-1' - surely the Keegan/Brooking interchange leading to Kurly Kev's slide under Georgie Wood, Wembley 1979?

Surely someone can recall a golden Tony Gubba moment? Not just shouting "Oh!" in that preternaturally high voice.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like CM4 because I am in it! Well, I'm one of the crowd in one of the backdrops. Fame!

Apparently, if you play the Franchise, you go bankrupt after one season as your crowds are too low, and are forced to sell players at a rate of knots. Har.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Is commentary number 5 is Alan Partridge from Alan Partridge's Look ahead to the 1994 World Cup Finals on the Day Today. Featuring other gems as 'Shit! Did you see that?' and 'That was liquid football'. Though he says 'he's got football pie all over his shirt'.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 11 April 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, I just realized that if I had been born in almost any other country in the world I would totally be into sports. Well, a sport, I guess.

Dan I., Saturday, 12 April 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend is in CM4, haha! He's on Dublin City University. I played it at my mates house and Thomo advised me not to buy him.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 12 April 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The answers to my five were :

(and look away now if you don't want to know the answers, sports fans..)

1. Bazza Davies, as previously mentioned; ditto 5, Alan Partridge.

2. (And Lineker uses him by not using him...") - Davies again - as Crisp Boy set up Gazza's winner in the FA Cup semi vs the Arse in 1991. Cf: "And you have to say that's magnificent !" for Gazza's free-kick opener.

3. ("3-1 !") Gemmill vs Holland in 78, Trainspotting and all that, "Scotland are in dreamland !"

4. ("Straight out of the textbook - and off the first page too.") - scorer's a bit obscure but the goal is legendary - Ernie Hunt's free kick for Coventry in 72 ? 73 ? when Willie Carr set up a donkey kick and Hunt belted it in first time. It's always on all those 'I Love Great 70s Goals' programmes.

darren (darren), Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you sure that Scotland-Holland game is the only time a commentator has ever said "3-1"?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't David Coleman's catchphrase (apart from er...) to say one-nil? Which at catchphrases go, is uber k-rub, not least as it suffers from being used once every match or so, but suffers as the scoring increases.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 13 April 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin - point taken, but I can safely say it's the '3-1' that I in the playground-cum-yoof-klub-cum-pub-cum-dole queue-cum-staff room have always heard associated immediately with Gemmill's mazy run and ultimately fruitless goal.
