Why is it that posts defending Momus . . .

. . . invariably begin with the clause "I'm not normally one to defend Momus, but . . ." ?

J (Jay), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Note: this is a serious question!

J (Jay), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

noone normally defends Momus

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think that's true, James! On every thread that Momus baits ILx into a frenzy, there's always at least one ILx'er who jumps in and says "Now, I don't normally defend Momus, but . . ." I think I'm going to do a search for the phrase!

J (Jay), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, that search came up BLEH, so maybe I'm just crazy.

J (Jay), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a distancing/cover your ass technique

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"I don't normally defend Momus..." = the new "Right then..."

Momus is mean sometimes. My name is also Nick. I don't wear an eyepatch, nobody knows my music. Nick luvs da kids.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of my best friends are Momi

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus is just Mom and us, so how could he be bad?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus takes on ILX:

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Danger Momus. Photoshoppers go nuts!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Fact is, there are many people on this board who love Momus dearly. However, if they come to his defense too much they run the risk of being accused of mindless ass-kissing. What they don't understand is that one of the things that is loved about him is so free of arrogance or egotism. Whatever he's doing, he's not trying to score a point or take a power trip.

What I'm saying is certainly not true of everyone who has ever disagreed with him (which is just about everyone at some point) - just the people who make snotty, eye-rolling, drive-by, isn't-it-obvious asides about him.

Eurmama, Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I was using momus to attack stuart gonzomoose's selective reading.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus has always struck me as someone who is perfectly capable of defending himself.

C J (C J), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It is U&K that someone write a cartoon called 'Danger Momus' starring a patch-eyed mouse.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Voiced by david jason?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever he's doing, he's not trying to score a point or take a power trip.

Except when he's trying to guilt-trip Americans, heh heh.

hstencil, Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

UK confronts America about its sinister ways:"FROM YOU, OKAY, I LEARNED FROM YOU DAD!"

oops (Oops), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahahah! good one oops!

hstencil, Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus is good at defending himself & seems to take pleasure in causing the nasty.

Momus is easily the best writer in this place. Which does not mean he's the brainiest or whatever, but none of the half dozen interesting thinkers here can match his ability to put thought into coherent, original prose.

So, you have to give a good reason why you think your defence of him is worth posting.

''Which does not mean he's the brainiest or whatever, but none of the half dozen interesting thinkers here can match his ability to put thought into coherent, original prose.''

really?!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

A bit rough around the edge edit-wise, but what the hell.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahem.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

CRAP, I forgot something essential to the picture. Just reuploaded it now!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Pamela Des Barres tryouts here - thanks for coming!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

andrew's link really reveals what a 'thinker' momus really is.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, forgot about you, Julio. Sorry!

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, what I said isn't quite true. But you can't argue with the likes of Dave Q.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Pamela Des Barres tryouts here - thanks for coming!
what a piece of sexist garbage.

Euromama, Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

People noticed the Ned in that photoshopped picture, right?

If I'm being totally honest - I think, possibly, (aesthetically?), Momus is the best writer on ILx.

Cozen (fm/am/md/cd@--.notmail.com) August 4th, 2002.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 April 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew you were weird.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 10 April 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

People noticed the Ned in that photoshopped picture, right?

Eh? *looks again* The only thing I see photoshopped is the name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

So who gets the other Danger Momus roles? I think the lizardy chap must be Mark S, unless Mark is to be his sidekick mole...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ts: baron greenback vs penfold!!

my plans for world domination are always thwarted by my bungling minions, so i guess i am the baron

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I am your mind. Obey.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I am still not sure whether Ned is Danger Momus' chauffeur, or whether he's actually stealing the car.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 11 April 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

If he's stealing the car, then who's his accomplice in the back seat? Or is Ned guilty of kidnap as well as TWOC??

C J (C J), Friday, 11 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sensing doubt over my motives!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

We know you too well not to.

Help help!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you trying to tell us that you are being kidnapped by that backseat driving dwarf?

C J (C J), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well hell, just look at him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Penfold's a good guy! I don't believe you!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that the geezer Momus has sometimes been unfairly abused on ilx. I'm not sure. I like the way he sticks to his guns. Then abandons them.

the pinefox, Saturday, 12 April 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Whilst were talking Nick, where does that "Hippy Analog Portapak Video Revolution" track come from?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 12 April 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i think momus is pimptastic.....and people that hate vice so much probably would have a groin haemorrage if they heard any audio from my daily conversations....."rrrring"......"hey, he says he wants a g of soft"....."nah, give him hard again...keep him crackin'"....."haha, oh, shit, you guys are heartless"-me.......you just wouldn't understand

Ramosi, Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i think momus is pimptastic...

The vision of the Hughes brothers doing a followup to American Pimp called The One-Eyed Love Bandit is wondrous.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, Momus (who shall hereby be called "Momz") would be all backlit with a 38k mug and finger waves talking shit like "yes, ensnaring a prospective "employee," as it were, requires a deft sense of the bitch's wide-eyed naivete, which I attempt to recontextualize as HITTING THE STREETS AND ACQUIRING MADD CHEDDA!.....folktronic niggaaaaaa!!!! **sticks out tongue and starts grinding**"

yeah, thats momz 4 ya

Ramosi, Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I HAVE A DREAM! Or rather, I have seen Ramosi's dream.
