a football thread, y'know. i'm guessing this is probably going to be limited to irish ilxers only. what do you think of our league being moved to the summer? who is your local team?

mine's bray wanderers. to the uninitiated, they're the team who ping from the first division to the premier division and back again constantly, winning the cup every few years as they go. they're in the first this year, after being relegated, and have sold star striker Jason Byrne (one of the league's top scorers last year, despite bray's abject display). fingers crossed, i should really attend more.

any more eircom league fans?

yeah one of my mates is a big shels fan,so a few of us used to go along every so often
we're going to start going again, hopefully
i don't really know much about the league though, other than the very basics, and an entire mythology built around stephen geoghegan...

Can't say that I follow it closely, apart from a vague affection for Derry City. I hope the switch is a success. Ireland, north and south, has produced more than its share of great players. Strikes me as sad that most Irish football fans seem more interested in the likes of Celtic, Liverpool and Man Utd than their local clubs. Is football still regarded as a dubious 'foreign' game by the GAA btw?

yeah i think so,although there are rumours that the gaa might be more open to the idea of the irish team playing at croke park than they have been in the past...

I guess I'm Shels too, I used to go occasionally but haven't been for years now. It's a good idea though, the switch, an excellent one in fact.

I notionally support Shels because my brother in law plays for them.

What form is the league going to take ? Is it going to qualify for the 2003-4 Euro stuff ? Do you think it'll mean LOI clubs getting more loan deals from Premiership clubs ? All in all - is it a GOOD THING ?

ps: I'm an Anglo, but I'm interested in the fortunes of the LOI.

it's a good thing, in that irish league fixtures won't be on at the same time as english premier league fixtures, so attendances might get better, more money etc. i hadn't really thought about the possibility of more loan deals from english clubs, but now that you mention it, that could be one outcome. i think this league season will be to qualify for the 2004-5 euro tournaments, and last year's standings will decide who'll be in the next european competitions.

bray off to a solid start, 2-1 home win...
