My first Coca Cola Vanilla

I just drank my first vanilla flavoured coke. it just seems a logical addition to the normal cola taste, but it's a bit heavy.
it drinks slowly. Not something I would drink when I'm really thirsty. That's when I normally drink a coke anyway.

what do you think? also other additions of cola. (the lemoen seems so unneccesary, you drink a coke with lemon, non?)

Erik, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Pepsi Vanilla is coming out soon. To make the idea even more unnecessary.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

my aunt works for Coke, highup. Two years ago me and my sisters were giving her hell over the whole 'with lemon' fad, last christmas we were telling her coke had blown it with vanilla coke, how real vanilla coke's good but that stuff in the stores was like bad cream soda.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I always heard that a base for coke was vanilla and the a base for pepsi was lemon thus the extra flavorings of those that have been coming out. Whereas coke and lemon and pepsi and vanilla will not be complimentary. Of course my dad told me this and my dad lies to keep me entertained.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i buy coke at university when i feel a bit silly about buying (more expensive) bottled water when i've forgotten to bring some from home. i buy vanilla coke when i want to drink vanilla.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I drank vanilla coke for about a week. As with pepsi blue I was the only person in the office who could stand it. Now I'm off caffeine and nobody drinks it.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it tasted like a dessert or an ice-cream.

Erik, Friday, 11 April 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

must be served with ice so that the water will 'cut' it.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

vanilla coke suXoRs - it's way too sweet. the idea of how sickeningly sweet pepsi vanilla will prob be sickens me even more

geeta (geeta), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Lemon Coke with vanilla vodka is really yum.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 April 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(In fact if you get rid of the Lemon Coke it's even better!)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 April 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

tastes like cream soda to me

oops (Oops), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Vanilla Diet Coke. Lemon is too sweet.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not getting the cream soda thing. Cream soda tastes more like root beer to me.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

DAMM YOU COCA COLA, FOR MAKING SOMETHING I LIKe.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 12 April 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Stoli Vanilla is sick and wrong. And drinking a caffeinated beverage isn't going to help you on the thirsty end (unless your thirst is for high fructose corn syrup, brought to you by Dwayne Andreas).

Vanilla Dr Pepper roolz!

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 12 April 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

noooooo you're making that up
tell me vanilla dr pepper doesn't exist !!
that soundz pepperlicious.

piscesboy, Saturday, 12 April 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I *need* to try some Vanilla Dr Pepper

And I love the Vanilla Coke but the lemon one is like cold fizzy lemsip. Bleuuurrrrggghhh.

j0e (j0e), Saturday, 12 April 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Vanilla Dr Pepper exists per se (I am British and therefore embarrassingly ignorant on matters Pepperworthy).

However, the American fast food chain Sonic provides flavourings you can add to your fountain soda, and one of them is vanilla. Hence vanilla Dr Pepper. My gf introduced me to it. It's amazing.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 12 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i love Vanilla Coke, great with Jack Daniels and lotsa ice

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I was really surprised to find this thread wasn't jel's.

It's really synthetic, so I love it (Vanilla Coke, that is).

VANILLA COKE ROXX U R ALL HIPPIES

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Coke with a squeeze of genuine lemon can be nice. The lemon stuff in the Diet Coke with Lemon tasted like industrial solvent...I can't believe they let something so nasty go out under their own name.

I tried Vanilla Coke this past summer; I hated it but since have remembered that I'm so accustomed to Diet Coke that I can't tolerate regular Coke anymore. Is there a Vanilla Diet Coke?

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked it the one time i tried it in toronto.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 April 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

SUNDAR IST EIN HIPPIE

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 12 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm drinking a vanilla Coke right now. It manages to be great without being especially vanilla or Coke, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's nothing like the fountain vanilla Cokes I've had, and there's nothing wrong with that, either. Diet Vanilla Coke is a totally different thing, which I also like.

But Moxie rules all, so everything else is kind of secondary.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 12 April 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too. I like artificial flavors. Fake strawberry is great, even though it doesn't taste anything like real strawberries.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Vanilla Coke is a'ight, but I prefer the stuff straight.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Vanilla Coke just tastes "tamer" for some reason.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It has a lot less cassia and citrus, I think, which are the things that give Coca-Cola its sharpness compared to Pepsi.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

that's good to know. I was kinda worried the difference was all in my head.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if nothing else, it's ... okay, since it's Coke, they don't release their "secret formulas." But imagine the regular Coca-Cola flavor blend, and pretend that to make Coke, you use one teaspoon of flavor per 12 ounces of sugar-water. You make Vanilla-Coke by adding vanilla to that flavor blend, but since the proportion of blend to sugar-water is the same, the final product has less of everything else than regular Coke does, in order to make room for the vanilla.

That's the main difference between Coca-Cola's Vanilla Coke and the fountain vanilla cokes: the latter added vanilla syrup to a full-strength Coke.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(... there's no reason for anyone to care about that :) I'm geeky about cooking-related things.)

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm grateful for the info. A friend of mine was big on putting vanilla in Coke before Vanilla Coke came out, and I definitely prefer that way of doing it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I feel less geeky, then :)

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I much prefer it that way too - but I'd rather have a cherry coke with syrup instead of out of the can

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Vanilla Coke just tastes "tamer" for some reason.

"A piquant taste with plenty of nose. Excellent for your feta cheese/proscuitto presentations."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The worst part is that, now, you can't find the Jones Vanilla Cola soda everywhere anymore, because Vanilla Coke must have some sort of exclusivity deal with major convenience stores now. Also, Vanilla Coke tastes like bad, diluted Kahlue.

Hansen's Vanilla Cola, as well as Jones', rox0r...

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Diet Vanilla Coke does exist. I'm not trying it. I don't even like the regular. Diet Cherry Coke exists. I'm as addicted to it as I can be to a soft drink. I loved the regular when I was little.

2. The origins for the idea of adding lemon to a soft drink come from the classic way most people got introduced to diet soft drinks when they were being introduced into the marketplace, or when people actually became aware of diet soft drinks. My mother, for example, was able to segue from regular Coke to Diet Coke by first squeezing lemon into her Diet Coke. I, on the other hand, was mostly raised on diet soft drinks and thus would probably need something to segue from diet to regular should I ever feel the need to.

3. Sonic is the king of sweet drinks as far as I'm concerned. I love getting the diet cherry limeades and diet strawberry limeades. They are both very delicious and very appropriate for the humid "I'm in desperate need for something fizzy and wonderful" Southern springtime.

the origin of this concept is you, haha. I believe people would add lemon to diet drinks to take the edge off of theiir weird taste. but I don't think that's when the first recorded instances of lemon adding would be.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 13 April 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe. Maybe not. When were diet versions of pre-existing soft drinks introduced, anyway? The 1950s, 1960s, somewhere around there? If it was sometime earlier, then the story I heard from my mother will need to be amended. However, if it *was* ca. the '50s or '60s, then it's a case of My Mother and Her Contemporaries Were There.

As for "weird taste" -- only if you're used to regular. I couldn't drink regular now. I tried once about two Fat Tuesdays ago, when I had decided that that Lent I would give up soft drinks. I had to suck down approx. 60 oz. of water to counteract the 12 oz. of regular soft drink in my system.

As always, your mileage may vary. :)

The 70s, I think. But ... adding lemon to soft drinks predates diet anything by a century or so. It was a standard addition at soda fountains, like lime juice, vanilla, etc.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 13 April 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, lemon may even have been added to a vessel of non-hard drinking liquid up to a COUPLE of milenia ago.

my mother or her contemporaries cannot confirm.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 13 April 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I must have been the one that corrupted Julio here in Toronto; I bought a 12-pack to try out, because it was almost as inexpensive as a couple of cans (wacky supermarket pricing). Anyhow, I had a bunch in the fridge the time he came over, so I think I handed him one.

Hopefully he didn't piss in my sink.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 13 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, that's right sean. it was you!

I can't remember having ever pissed in yr sink but I should have done it since you corrupted my ears by playing a track of that first MBV album ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 April 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought some vanilla coke today! It was quite nice, but I imagine it would be totally sickly if I had some with my dinner.

Hey, the skulking's not my fault! There's obviously strange doings going on, and I just wanted them verified. There's this whole hidden uroculture of which I was previously unaware.

No trenchcoat, though. Just the hat. ... I don't mean just the hat, but you know.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Vanilla is a pod

It's a pod containing seeds, so I suppose botanically that makes it a fruit.

Well, I tried Diet Vanilla Coke today, and I still don't like it. As somebody upthread put it, the vanilla is way too strong. Now for those of you who do like it, this bodes well -- things I like have a way of disappearing from the market, while things I don't like linger around forever.
