Ned - sanguine

Indeed. Or I could just be smug. Ah, medieval humor -- and medieval humors at that.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Phlegmatic? Eh? I'm not good on old medicine.

DG, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, that was officially the biggest groaner here since Mike's "How do you titillate an ocelot" joke.

Nitsuh, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought it was quite good, but then I'm starting to get elated about the weekend ahead what with ten minutes left of my working day/week.

One more thread which focuses on psychology and *boom*. Oops the mere thought makes my head explode.

Ned, that was officially the biggest groaner here since Mike's "How do you titillate an ocelot" joke.

You say this like it's a bad thing!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(HEY!! what abt "plato dinner"? that was way worse than the "humours" joke)

mark s, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gotta agree with Mark on that one. Sorry, Ned.

Dan Perry, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dammit!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Carmody: melancholic and phlegmatic.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not a bad thing, Ned. (I was just about to type, "I quite like groaners," but then I realized how that sounds.)

Interestingly, the ocelot joke got a huge laugh out of my ex-ish- girlfriend, who is not a big laughing-out-loud type person.

Nitsuh, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know what this question means, can someone explain?

Ally, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a vague idea but not detailed enough to explain anything besides that it has to do with temperament and the Middle Ages. I'm hoping it's what I think it is because I've been wanting to know what all four are for years and never bothered looking it up. So yes, please explain someone.

maria, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Old Pedant steps up:
In the faroff days of my yoof = the Middle Ages, your body-type and sensibility (or "humour") was tht controlled by four fluids viz BLOOD, PHLEGM, BILE (or CHOLER) AND BLACK BILE. If you had too much blood, you were SANGUINE eg red-faced and jolly; too much phlegm and you were PHLEGMATIC eg torpid and even-tempered; excessive bile made you CHOLERIC or given to rages; while black bile led to MELANCHOLY. I guess they were probably also linked into the four elements (earth air fire water), but I can't recall how.

mark s, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Earth, Wind & Fire shall henceforth be known as Phlegm, Melancholy & and Cholera.

Doesn't quite roll off the tongue. Guess you have to be medieval.

Dan Perry, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

phlegmatics is the only really ugly word among them.

lyra, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Then I'm definitely choleric.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is there any question that I'm choleric then? Ned's definitely sanguine ;)

Ally, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All that blood in my veins. And in my face, when I have a drink and become louder and jollier, oh yes. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damnit, I'm trying really hard to be melancholic. I think I am closest to phlegmatic, being generally even-tempered, but that sounds so disgusting. I guess I'll have to try for sanguine instead.

maria, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, if you were deemed a SICK PERSON from having too much blood, phlegm, black or yellow bile, you would be CURED by being bled, purged or sweated. So be careful which character traits you admit to, or you may find people sticking leeches to the back of your neck or sneaking ex-lax into your pint at the next meet up.

I dunno, but I've become awfully melancholic this week.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

[These psychological/physiological classifications are actually related to the four astrological elements: choleric - fire, phlegmatic - earth, sanguine - air, melancholic - water. It was this really cool composite system in medieval times, used to diagnose and delineate diseases, almost like a western version of ayurveda]
