How will we be shocked in the future when we catch our kids "in the act"?

Millar: I can't wait to walk in on my kids having sex when I'm pushing fifty or something. I'll tell them they're doing it all wrong. "THAT GOES IN THE BUTT, STUPID" "DID YOU LICK IT FIRST?" etc.

Hilarious comment, but brings up a good point...

There's this certain essence in the generation gap between us (talking ILXers specifically here) and our parents that will likely NOT be replicated (phew) between us and our kids (or those who plan to have kids)

Question is: what do you think the kids of the future will come up that WILL surely shock us when we catch them in the act?

(I say specifically us, the ILXers, because -- sadly -- I think a lot more kids our age or younger than we think will likely grow up just as prudish as generations past)

what makes you think there won't be a generation gap?

huh?

I will be EXTREMELY FUCKING SHOCKED, seeing as how the whole gay thing will make fatherdom for me unbelievably unlikely. (Not impossible -- just unlikely.)

What makes you think that the generation gap (or whatever particular "essence" of the generation gap you're referring to here) won't happen between ILX0rs and their children?

(yes this is off-topic. Plz ignore me I am st00pid)

Well, maybe this is a bold assumption and a large slab of pretense, but I think ILXers tend to be more comfortable talking about sex in a more objective fashion than others. As far as the subject of sex and generation gaps are concerned, I think we've filtered out a lot of the shame (for better or worse, but mostly better) associated with talking about sex and sexuality; and therefore, I think we'll be less shocked and more understanding if we catch our kids in the act similar to the stories told in that other thread.

Yes, some people do just end up mirroring their parent's prudishness, but that's not the common case, I feel.

Anyway, unless someone volunteers to impregnate me, I'm unlikely to have children since I can't find myself in a relationship long enough for the concept to even occur to me. But I'd like one, I'd teach it to speak Russian.

ok but talking abt sex in an "objective" fashion = "what's it like for daleks?" *not* rating yr parents hott-wise

'cuz most people I know have generation gaps with their parents. It was a generalization. *looks above* didn't put a "most" in my original statement. oh well.

Don't blame me. I started a thread about what music was playing when our parents were at it conceiving each of us, but everyone got all "ew" on me.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well then.. let's do it.

Our parents... hot or not?

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't make me post that picture of my dad in his stylin' sky blue tux again.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Our parents... hot or not?

Well, I mean... I wouldn't do them, if that's what you're asking.

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, is your point that while we have no problems talking about sex in a general detached sense here, that we'll all undeniably feel awkward when the idea of sex and our closest ones becomes an issue?

Because, well, I do agree with the notion that lots of people who describe themselves as 'liberated' will be more conservative when the topic of sex comes up in the context of their family.

But I'm talking about the word "shocked" here. it's a very flexible word.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i talk of a lot of things. but when my dad was talking the other day about my origins, and used the term "bareback," i had to leave. there are some people it's difficult to associate with fucking.

I think it depends on exactly what the little snot is doing with the electrodes.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Only electrodes?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not letting them play with the defibrillator.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on Dan, they're just playing doctor.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 14 April 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, I should think not. They didn't even shout "stand clear"!
