j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Rivaldo's first game for Barca, against Real Sociedad. he scored twice - one free kick, and again from an impossible angle. I like the old-timey music that accompanies their arrival on the pitch.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That's their "hymn" Mr Skillz, if you mean the great song that ends with a crescendo of "Barca BARCA BBBBBAAAAAAARRRRRRRRCCCCCCCAAAAAAA!!!"

I saw his first game after injury and he was booed off the pitch, it was a shame, Figo was amazing though. The biggest cheers of the night were for every one of the five goals that another team (possibly Sociedad) knocked past Real Madrid.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the one. I tried to sing along like I knew the words. It was hard.

I love Dream Team, it is the best thing EVAH

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we have a football picture thread?

Er...no. We may not. We already have a kitten thread, a monkey thread, and a real estate agent thread. That, young man, should be enough for anyone!

Every discussion of football needs a mention or two of Pele. Someone with a faster connection find some good ones!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.volcanostore.com/graphics/pele.jpg

Pele is the essential spirit of Hawaii's volcanoes -- venerated as a Goddess by the Hawaiian people, respected as a basic energy form by all who witness Her eruptive power, and personified as a ethereal human form by those who tell tales about Hawaii. No one has ever captured Pele's nature so well as Herb Kane, dean of Hawaiian artists, tells of Pele in this well-illustrated small book of fascinating prose and original art.

apparently...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

also on the google image search for pele there is, i kid you not, A FLUFFY KITTEN four rows down, but this has seemingly disappeared (hopefully adopted and not anything else...) from the site that was hosting it. this might work:

http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:TvI9Jb08P4cC:www.cuhumane.org/adopts/020911/pele.jpg

but it's here:

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

what is it with cats called pele?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

A fluffy kitten named after Pele is obviously the world's greatest thing.

who would be in an ILX XI?

i volunteer to be goalie, as long as i can come out every now and then Barthez style

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd go right back, obviously. My speciality would be crippling opposing wingers with reckless challenges.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned has proper goalie hair though, Steve. I'd have you as a nippy winger, linking up nicely with Ronan up front.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth on the bench as a supersub, coming on late with the hope of altering the direction of the game.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham as Neil Warnock, obviously.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be a glamorous wife

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not quick enough to be a winger...if the pitch was twice as long i could do it tho maybe, and i could cut off my left foot and it would be more useful

still, see the 'fcuking sunny day' thread for my first hint (of many to come) that we need to get all the footie lovers on ILX together for a game very soon

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

j0e i envisage you as the physio, also supplying refreshments at half time

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you dom p... and mr n, yes i think that giancarlo is still at oldham. REAL FOOTBALL.

kieron, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

If we could go back to when I was fit (we're talking the 1970s), I'd be left back. I was good at football, in the days when I could run more than four inches without needing a good lie down.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Left midfield. England have tried most everyone down there, law of averages dictates that they will eventually get round to me. Plus which my hair is really very, very flouncy.

And on the subject of hair, there is now far too much of it on this thread. We need balance. We need:

For truly, there is nothing this man cannot do, apart from possibly going in goal.
