Who goes to art school? I'm considering -- Pratt (brooklyn) vs. School of the museum of fine arts (boston), recommendations? Art school vs. 'real school?'

nora (nora), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I live by Pratt. It looks nice. I have never attended an art school.

hstencil, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i went. not to those skools though. it was a hoot. 3 and a half years of debauchery and laziness. this was in the free education days btw.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

From what I gather, art school is fine and dandy if you can find a way to go without being in hock up to your eyebrows.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

You should go to Cooper Union. It's free. I wish I could go to art school but I'm not smart enough.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

you just have to pretend to be smart

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't get into cooper union, unfortunately I'm not one of the sixty or so lucky ones out of the 16,000 who apply. Free tho.

nora (nora), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and I'm all about debauchery and laziness

nora (nora), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Think about how debauched you could get if you had all of that tuition to spend though.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i often wonder if i should regret it as a waste though. I mean you can get debauched and lazy anywhere, without the need for artskool justification.

nearly all my art was "conceptual" (ie i thought about it when i was stoned)

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Art school was the best years of my life that I don't remember. (Of course, I went to a shitty little art school, so it was actually the worst years of my life, but I had the best time doing it...)

I did both art school and "real" school. Neither prepared me for real life in any way, shape or form. But art school was way more fun.

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, I did that, and at Oxford, where nobby people doing oh, really important subjects like Politics or Geology look at you squint and say, "Oh really? I didn't know you could do that here - what do you do, paint things all day?" Grrr. I now have various specialised technical skills and a low employability index, but it was a lot of fun and I really enjoy being able to mix resin and develop and print my own photographs.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Art school was the funniest three years in a row I've yet had.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I'd gone to art school, but oh well, it's probably for the best that I didn't.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I considered pratt for postgrad, but I've settled on th RCA back home in London, cos its better and they have bursaries fo something like 80% of students, at least on the industrial design engineering course I want to do.

Pratt seemed pretty good though I missed out on visiting it due to what happened when I was visiting NYC that time.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I am almost certainly going to art school next year. I'm looking forward to be able to dress funny! I've always been such a utilitarian dresser.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I did go to film school, too. That's worse than art school, isn't it?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The stigma, I mean.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Film school? DUDE! You are SOOOO unemployable! Like, even more unemployable than me!

(Did you wear a trench coats? All the film students wore trench coats when I was at school. They were, like, issued with them upon registration or something...)

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no aptitude for any visual art except photography (which I'm great at) and stupid punk collages (which I'm stupid at).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Art school wouldve been great, all that free love, regardless of physical discrepancies - and indeed lack of talent...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

But can't you go to Hollywood studies with a film school degree, and be instantly given a film to direct? Is that not how it works? Even if you have a 2:1?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you wear a trench coats? All the film students wore trench coats when I was at school. They were, like, issued with them upon registration or something...

Ha ha guys. No, I did not wear a trenchcoat. And yes, I am eminently unemployable. But to speak in defence of film school, it was actually very hard work, but very productive. I am currently weighing up offers for Legally Blonde 3 and Dude, Where's My Speedboat?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Martin, not even if Daddy is a famous director. Although it seems that way.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I mention I'm the bastard child of Luis Bunuel?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

goto boston. it is the art students and local bands that
make boston a decent city. (see boston hate thread)

kephm, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

80k down the drain

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

skool is gay.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i confess!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

mine is in africa tho, that doesn't help you. i like it better than real school.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm studying art at a state university. I keep thinking of transferring to an 'art school' - so I have to go to a different website every month and read the tuition. "$25k+godawful rent... or $6k and dirt cheap - hmm, tough decision."

Not much debauchery. I got that out of the way when I was a poli-sci dropout.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I live by Pratt. It looks nice. I have never attended an art school.

-- hstencil (hstenci...), April 16th, 2003.

Howdy neighbor.

jm (jtm), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i audit an "art" class at the local women's college on friday afternoons. eep!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax never loses his capacity to surprise me.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not going tomorrow and i'll be sad.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 April 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Investigate a school's program, including faculty and alumni, and talk to current and former students if you can. Trust me, self-motivation is important, but you don't want to spend $30,000 learning everything on your own.

Stuart (Stuart), Thursday, 17 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not going tomorrow and i'll be sad.

You could show them your panties:

"cartoon summer panties"

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I read this as 'stupid punk colleges.'

six months pass...
Oh no, it might be happening all over again.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 31 October 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes here. Advice. Practice lots of free-living skills like stealing and survivalism before you go. You will never make more money than you will owe.

sucka (sucka), Friday, 31 October 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep.

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 31 October 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i would have gone to art school if i would have had more money and more creativity. does anyone have any excel or access questions?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 31 October 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

this is what it does to you

i studied art - i hate art
i majored in film - i hate film

gaz (gaz), Friday, 31 October 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 31 October 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 31 October 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i'm good with it then.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 31 October 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

fine then hold me, softly

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 31 October 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Part of me keeps thinking of transferring to a 'real' art school, but I can't imagine going $60k+ in debt for a BFA.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 31 October 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I start art school in three weeks.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 31 October 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

How old are the (majority of) students at RISD/SVA/etc.? Straight out of high school types, or older?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 31 October 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i spend too much time with art school students and get incredibly jealous every time i visit their studios and i really really wish i went to art school too.

minna (minna), Saturday, 1 November 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Heading to film school in two months. But I don't think I have too many illusions here. I'm doing it so that I can:

1) Get the hell out of America ASAP
2) Meet people that I can work with professionally on a steady basis
3) Get non-school professional film work as much as possible while at the school
4) Start laying down the foundations of a European extension of my current cinema venture (I hesitate to call it a proper business, as making profit is probably the last and least of our priorities)

Oh, and
5) Learn more about film production.

It's not that I'm disinterested in #5 or think that I already know it all, it's just that I honestly am not going in thinking that this is really going to teach me that much in and of itself. So I'll definitely try to suck the marrow out of it, but everything's with an eye towards the beyond-school. Honestly, I think it's great and all that people can go to these schools just to concentrate on "pure" (whatever that means) study and practice of art without other considerations, but I personally can't do that approach.

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 1 November 2003 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

In retrospect, I truly wish I had gone to art school (instead of going to a reg'lar liberal arts college and only minoring in studio art...ultimately just an enjoyable waste of time). I can't help but think that if I'd pursued art instead of writing/journalism, I'd be a happier, more fulfilled camper today.

Ah, the road less travelled.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i kinda wish i'd done plumbing

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Certainly pays well, plumbing does.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 November 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

HONOUR THE GOYA! (sorry)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 1 November 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

My tuition and fees are just about doubling over the next year (fuck you very much, Texas Legislature and Rick "No New Taxes" Perry), and while I've gotten comfortable with my university, I might as well transfer somewhere better/different, if I'm going into debt anyway.

I automatically eliminate the NYC art schools/RISD types - there's no way I could even get someone to loan me $30k plus per year, much less ever repay it.

What are the recommended four-year art programs, preferably public, in the US (or Canada)? My main emphasis is photography, but I'd like to have passable design and printmaking skills. Even better: if it was in a cool climate. Texas hates me. Name recognition isn't much of a factor, I'd like to keep my illusion that I can get jobs/into grad school on the strength of my work.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

if you want to be a photographer, just do it. sent up a darkroom and do it. don't worry about school. go to grad school to make contacts in the city you want to work in.

uc santa cruz has a great print studio, one of the best in the country, i'm told, but no grad program.
