What are you most proud of?

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I gotta think about this myself.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My second or third novel (I'm not debating which one, just where to number it), but that's a ... selfish kind of pride, if that isn't redundant. It's the "boy, I didn't used to think I could do this, but I did, and it's cool" kind of pride, not the "I improved someone's life" pride.

Nothing else comes to mind at the moment, but I'm very writing-centric this week.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

there are a few things ive been proud of achieving in my life so far, but the best yet is that i have made it through the first year of sole-parenthood and my boy is doing well.

donna (donna), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

On the exact opposite end of the spectrum, the best thing I've ever done for myself, my financial well-being, my sex life, and arguably the planet in general is to get a vasectomy.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I walked the 8km no-mans-land from Syria to Jordan at night on a friday during ramadan with a huge backpack on and suffering from amoebic dysentary, talked myself out a sticky situation with the Syrian border patrols [ooooh, sucks to be them these days] using my Arabic phrasebook. All that just to save stupid $5 on a taxi. It must sound ridiculous & silly, but I'm pretty proud of it considering that i'm a feeble 130-pound korean guy who probably should have been at home studying calculus or something.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say something like "Playing Shepherd's Bush Empire" or "releasing our album" but then I read Phil's post and felt kinda insignificant...

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

oh but kate, something like "Playing Shepherd's Bush Empire" or "releasing an album" requires talent. walking from Syria to Jordan just takes a bit of stupidity/insanity/balls. i, for one, wish i wasn't so damn tone-deaf or knew how to play a musical instrument. so, congratulations! really.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oof, i hope that didn't come across as condascending.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I supported someone thorugh the time she was in a mental institution, and afterwards. It wasn't exactly my duty, since we weren't on such good terms before this, but if I would've done less than I could, I would hate myself today.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Nursed my ex through mental illness, I think.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I just burnt a whole lot of porn to a CDR. That's about it, really.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My crappy student film. It's nonsense, ripped off from all my studenty film heroes, but it's still my baby.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew can i get a copy of that?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Asking Vicky to marry me.

Phil's walk took some major cojones though, bloody hell!

chris (chris), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Although it may not seem very profound my biggest achievement is my relationship with my b/f. We went through loads in the beginning & are still up against it sometimes, but we are stronger & happier than ever & I love it! Other things that I am most proud of that I have been involved with, is my friendships & my god son.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Wipe semen in someone's hair without them realising.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

how romantic

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I can see how that's fun, but is it really the best thing you've ever done? I'm noticing that most of these answers, mine included, are not actual accomplishments. We shouldn't be congratulated for just being people.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Tep's answer (speaking as someone pondering novel number three).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Wipe semen in someone's hair without them realising.

All the details, please! In the style of 'Portnoy's Complaint'.

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

my life is a failure.
i think that.
i am a failure.

i am not proud of anything, everything that i think is good, i can point out whats shit about it.

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

-My senior thesis (years later I'm still amazed that it came out so well)

-Surviving (just about) my first year of teaching. I've wanted to teach forever and when my dream turned not to be anything close to reality I thought I would have to give it up. Alas, no.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I saved a child from drowning.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel pretty much the same way as Anthony. Any talent I once had has been wasted.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I once got busy in a Burger King bathroom

humpty (Oops), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Good heavens! :-( There's too much sadness on this thread now. *good thoughts* Though Humpty does provide a certain compelling vision. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wherever I've gone and whatever I've done (nothing terribly impressing, mind), Spencer is the best of the lot. It doesn't take any talent whatsoever to produce a child, but it takes a helluva lot to parent one.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

A proud moment: when I phoned up for the result of my degree, the head of the course told me I had a first "of course", and said "we were really pleased you got your first, because we know you helped a lot of other people through the course." I still feel good remembering him saying that - it surprised me that they had really noticed, since most of that stuff was in the cafeteria.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

wot anthony said.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

But Anthony you are a poet. You couldn't even write that without writing it as poetry.

Personally, hmm...recently I'm pretty proud of go to New Orleans to play New Orleans music and trading solos with Herlin Riley, even if he blew me away and the trip was more a great experience than a personal accomplishment per se.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i rode a freight train from Minneapolis to Portland, Oregon. i'm proud of that. i did it twice actually.
In both cases the return trips were, less heroically, on the Greyhound.

gabriel (gabe), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

how i miss that portable sundial

gabriel (gabe), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes, just getting through the day ( or minute ) 'being people' is a major achievement.

donna (donna), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i've tried to be a good son, good brother, good uncle, good godparent, and good friend to my loved ones. that is the best thing i've ever done.
