Have you ever been to a convention of any sort? What was it like?

This thread inspired by the Smugglers "Buddy Holly Convention"

I've gone to the NecronomiCON, not the one centered on Lovecraft, just a general RPG/sci-fi/anime/fandom type deal, you know, w/ a Klingon rock band providing the entertainment,

By the time I started going to them, I had sorta lost interest in the whole deal. So other than playing in a few games, it was pretty meh for me.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been to IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) conferences, and one or two WAP ones. You get better T-shirts at the IETF.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, that reminds me, I also went to the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Student conventions. The big event was the concrete canoe race.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been too several Physics conventions at the regional and national level.
Good times.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no Transformers convention this year! :(((((( I was going to make 2003 the year I finally went!

Comic conventions, in order of scale (I've been to the first two a few times each, the latter pair just once each, years ago):

Caption in Oxford. Small press comics. Mostly involves sitting in a garden drinking with friends. 100 people tops, at a guess.

UKCAC - UK Comic Art Convention. In the Student Union building near Russell Sq - as above, except an indoor bar. Used to get about 1,500 people.

San Diego - huge and slick and businessy. Drinking with top comic creators by rooftop swimming pools. I interviewed several wonderful and lovely creators - Sergio Aragones, Archie Goodwin, Doug Wildey, Scott McCloud. 15,000 people.

Angouleme, in the south of France. Takes over the town/city. Drinking in huge guest tent. Centred on the comic museum, a glorious four storey building. Opened on the first day by Jacques Lang, then Minister Of Culture, on live national TV. 250,000 people!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the difference between a convention and a conference?

been to a few comic conventions - prized momeent at age 13/14(?) meeting Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) and I still have our pic together.

but ppl are using convention up there in the way i think of conferences, is that a purely UK/US distinction or am I missing something?

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to a, umm, beanie baby convention... i used to have a little business out of my dorm-room buying & selling them, so it was purely business. really.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to go to a convention, or a conference or something like that. And I would like to be part of some sort of panel.

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i have an academic conference in august and was at a newspaper one in nov.

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been to a few sci-fi conventions in Wisconsin (Gencon, Madcon) and one PASIC, which is the international percussion convention. It was pretty amusing how similar they were, just different kinds of geeks.

The sci-fi ones were fun, pretty much what you'd expect. The ones I went to with my girlfriend were a lot more fun because she really enjoys meeting the famous people. The drum one was great, tons of great clinics and stuff to hit with sticks.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to some science fiction convention with a former roommate in Baltimore. It was the first time at such a thing for both of us, and a turning point in both our lives -- I swore on that day to eliminate fanboy geekiness from my life forever, my then roommate disappeared into a world of Godzilla toy collecting and intense relationships with young women into MUDs and too-tight Star Trek uniforms.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Canadian Association of Journalists
I stayed at a nice hotel and watched golf

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to OSS 2002, and it was grebt.

1. I got off work for a week and nobody gave a shit when I got up in the morning.

2. Nobody cared that I wasn't ther for the AM sessions as long as I made and appearance sometime in the afternoon.

3. I got to hang out with a crazy old Japanese documentary filmmaker, two members of the auditing team from the German branch of Arthur Anderson, a couple of Norwegian intel agents, some fromer CIA and DIA personnel, a guy who worked for SOCOM, and this awesome motherfucker from the Netherlands (ARNO YOU ARE AWESOME).

4. See # 3

5. See # 3

6. I got to hang out with a dude fm Scotland Yard, a hot girl fm Sweden's intelligence agency, and a rep fm some NGO (who cares which one, she wz hot)

I also went to Summercon 99, a nice hacker convention, which unfortunately fell right in the middle of one of my 'sober' periods - I got to hang out with

1. guys who cd ruin yr credit rating in the time it take you to read this

2. guys who cd give you palpitations and poss. a fatal attk just fm shaking yr hand

3. guys who ran their own server farms over wireless b4 802.11 was readily available on the market

4. guys who wanted to buy me hella shots and owned a large collection of firearms

(note: none of the preceding categories are exclusive)

Ergo: Classic.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to a convention for Media 100 editors. It was in Reading FC's stadium. I got to wear a badge with my name and company on it. I was the youngest person there by a country mile. I left halfway through, and quit my job soon after. They had custard creams.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, I forgot, I've also been to APA publishing conventions (and the midwest equivalent). Those were fantastic, lots of authors and free books around. I was pretty much a kid at those, so I could convince the comic book companies to give me free graphic novels and stuff...also got stuff signed by Ray Bradbury and Stan Lee at one convention.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i covered the astronauts and cosmonauts convention in groningen in 1990 asnd met wubbo ocke1s who is a dick

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

>I swore on that day to eliminate fanboy geekiness from my life forever

Pretty much my reaction, and I did, except for a little roleplaying now and then.

fletrejet, Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to a UFO Unconvention (!) in Sheffield about 12 years ago purely because two friends of mine had raved about the comedic excesses of the previous year's - folks interrupting speakers to ask about "the seventh level of existence, that which is inhabited, nay ruled, by insects" and having the speakers agree with them.

No such barminess the year I went, though I think it was the world premiere of that Roswell autopsy footage (mildly comedic) and some incomprehensible Ukrainian chap blathering on about abductions. Oh, and blasts of War of the Worlds were played between each lecture.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Gencons 23-28, I think.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Been to the San Diego Comic-Con just about every year since oh, 1987, i think. It's huge and bewildering, but there's almost always a chance to meet interesting folks and get a look at some great (and LOTS of not-so-great artwork). If enough ILXors are going, perhaps we could arrange a FAP this year. For those who haven't been, it's part swap-meet, part encounter group, part freakshow, all mind-numbing terror...

Went to Worldcon (big SF convention, dunno how big in the grand scheme of things) about a decade back but was struck by how small it actually was. Great panel action featuring John Shirley, though.

Been to a couple guitar/gear shows. Those are kinda weird and erudite in an uncultured sort of way. Lots of pretty instruments that i'll never buy at those ludicrous prices, but still pretty. Funny how much people will charge for a metal box filled with wires and some diodes, though.

The most frightening convention i've ever been to isn't really a convention, but the E3 trade show, for video and computer games. Fills the totality of the LA convention center (two titanic and a couple lesser) halls filled with seizure-inducing electronics and so goddamn much money that it isn't funny. The geeks are quite nearly outnumbered by the suits and it makes for very interesting humanwatching.

But it's also good for an artery-clogging breakfast at The Pantry, since i have to drive up early enough to avoid traffic.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend is paid to go to E3. I couldn't be more jealous.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I'd go to to San Diego comic convention again, Matt. All the stuff I enjoyed was either because I was in the business then (this was when I was editor of a mag about comics, and just starting a line of comic books) or kind of despite the con. I do sort of fondly remember drinking late into the night by a hotel pool with Ted McKeever, Bob Burden, Matt Wagner and others.

haha, and being approached by Chris Claremont (beside a different hotel pool on a different night), who I'd met several times before. First thing he says (no 'hello' or anything) was "So what do you think of my latest comics?" and I had to explain to him, not for the first time, that I hadn't read anything he'd written for some years.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Claremont's gaffe:

Bwahahahahahaaa. Priceless. Bet you could substitute John Byrne in there and folks would still believe it.

The one time i met Claremont he seemed like a good enough guy, and i tried to get his take on the resurrection and exploitation of one of his most infamous creations/revisions (being Jean Grey/Phonenix). He wouldn't say anything near the microphone at the panel, but afterwards i got a good rant out of him.

Come on out, Martin. I'll make cookies.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

He always seemed a pompous arse to me. I still like the X-Men issues he did with Byrne, and some of his other old comics, but his opinion of his own work and talent is extraordinary.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Come to think of it, I chaired a panel with him on once, at a UK con. My main job on that panel was making sure other people got a word in.

Also, he got comic artists he met to draw topless images of the female X-Men in this hardback sketchbook he carried around with him. He was really proud of these dashed-off drawings of Storm's tits.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple of my friends get sent by work to E3.

If academic conferences are included, I go to three or four of those a year. This is why I like to talk about the varying levels of attractiveness/repulsiveness of different academic disciplines.

Also various book and publishing events.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I once went to a Beatlefest.

(I tagged along with some friends because they wanted someone to share the cost of the van rental; while the event was going on during the daytime Jacki and I went into Manhattan for record shopping.)

Few things were as surreal as going into the vendors hall and seeing one record dealer with four or five copies of the Yesterday and Today butcher sleeve, right next to each other. Although that may have been topped by the jam session -- 50 or 60 fans, all with acoustic guitars, each noodling away at their favorite Beatles song. I was so tempted to holler out a request for "Revolution 9."

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 18 April 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

seizure-inducing electronics and so goddamn much money that it isn't funny. The geeks are quite nearly outnumbered by the suits

This is the modern computer game industry in a nutshell.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Used to go to the San Diego Comic Convention with some regularity, haven't been in awhile. Er, whatever Matt said above, and stuff...

Went to a couple of Worldcons and about a half-dozen conventions of the American Sociological Association and Pacific Sociological Association. Most academic conventions aren't all that spectacular - at least the ones I've ended up going to.

Apple's World Wide Developer Conference is the best of the computer ones... Total alpha-geek crowd and massive parties afterward.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
Hey, I'm volunteering at the WonderCon comic convention in SF with Leee, whose brilliant idea this was. What should I expect?
