my milf-y dentist (whose specialty is cosmetic dentistry although i go there for general work) is trying to get me to whiten my teeth. i told her i wasn't interested right now and she shrugged and said "oh well, i'm a perfectionist."
i think my teeth look fine for a civilian -- if i were a model/actress/person in the public eye i'd probably whiten them. but i don't care, and i have sensitive teeth anyway.

dentists always act like your teeth are far more horrible than they are. they want you to be ashamed and fearful and give them all your $$$$$$$$$$$$.

Teeth whitening is dumb. The folks I know who have done it say it just doesn't last.
Dentistry may be the one medical profession that, if it does a good job, makes less work for itself. If you brush and floss every day, that's most of the battle, and as one pre-fluoride generation gives way to the next, that's fewer and fewer patients prone to cavities to a chronic (which is to say, lucrative) degree. Which is why so many dentists compulsively push cosmetic stuff.
I once went to the dentist and was given a different guy since my regular was out. He insisted on x-rays (despite this being a brief window sans insurance), and then, looking at my teeth, suggested I was grinding my teeth in my sleep and wanted to fit me for a mouthguard.
"Wait a minute," I said. "How can you tell I've been grinding them?"
"I just got back from a conference where I went to a panel on teeth grinding," he claimed.
"But you've never seen my teeth before in your life. For all you know they've looked like this for years."
"Trust me," he answered. "You can bank on it."
I told him that was a poor choice of words and passed on the treatment he pushed.

He even gave me a doughnut once.

I see my dentist with my coffee-stained and braces-scarred chompers and he just asks me about the duck hunting magazine my company publishes.
Works for me.
