Curiosity always gets the better of mothers, I find. My mother stopped criticising my dress and personal grooming choices after a family gathering where I said, somewhat facetiously in front of the assembled, that when *she* wrote for Vogue or Harper's Bazaar we'd all take her style tips that bit more seriously. But she and my sister still freak out if they think I'm not dressed 'normal' (sic).

My mothers eternal quote which has got her through me having long hair, pierced eyebrow (its cool honest), short hair, offensive t shirts.............."I've had two sons and one daughter before you Ronan, so even if somethings you do surprise me, none of them shock me." Followed by an adult chuckle, if in the company of visitors. Obviously I assume the role of sulky teenager then. Appearances have to be kept up.

That's a bit silly, isn't it? I think after a month or less she'd have to get over it, even if you hadn't cut your hair.

I've never really tried to do anything except dye my hair (also red), to which she said no until I went out and bought the dye and did it myself. Now I want purple but I think that will not go over so easily, and I can't find any dye that doesn't require hair bleaching first. (She thought I was being rebellious. No, if I was rebellious I wouldn't be dyeing my hair red.)

Why don't you just explain " MOther, fairest flower of Egypt,I dyed the hair of my head red that you might see how deep I feel for your love, how pure my heart is, and how I love to do handstands in bloodpuddles?"
