Search: Dazed and Confused, 25th Hour, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, Sixteen Candles (Hughes was fond of this format I reckon), Clerks

Destroy: Mallrats

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Search:Last Night, High Noon.

Destroy:Pulp Fiction!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

After Hours. Now there's a movie.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Did Pulp Fiction take place in one day? I thought it was at least 2.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Training Day

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Three O'clock High, Before Sunrise, Run Lola Run.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

three times, no less!

anniversary party

ron (ron), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Pulp Fiction takes place over twenty years. And at least three days.

Search: Die Hard, Do The Right Thing.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my God! Carey stole two-of-the-three I was gonna post! (before sunrise & run lola run)

Other one-day-movies for the Searching: Dazed & Confused, Slacker, Suburbia (well, I guess just about EVERY Richard Linklater film then, huh?)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the 24-hour movie. It's one of my favourite genres. Search Sweet Smell of Success. And, as above, Dazed and Confused and Before Sunrise (Linklater seems to have a thing for them--I suppose I could include most of his others too).

le slutsky, Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: 'Before Sunrise' - hateable in many ways, yes, but worth it for the scene in the record shop with Kath Bloom's 'Come Here' encapsulating romantic embarrassment. (Also: Does 'Billy Liar' take place all in one day? In which case, it wins. [and does Winterbottom's 'Wonderland' take place in one day?])

Destroy: the film of 'Mrs Dalloway' (not 'The Hours') during which I fell asleep in Edinburgh Filmhouse and woke up drooling with my head falling onto the shoulder of the pensioner next to me.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

D: Nick of Time, Adventures in Babysitting (oddly enough, both have one of my favourite actors, Clark Johnson, in small roles)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Miracle Mile, 200 Cigarettes (well, I liked it).

Did the Blake Edwards movie The Party take place in one day? I can't remember if the beginning bit with Peter Sellers on the movie set is the same day as the party.

Destroy: House of 1000 Corpses

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I try to put that Kath Bloom song on as many mixed tapes as I can. woo hoo.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

S: The Dead movies, as in Night of the Living, and Dawn of, and Day of...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet Smell of Success is probably the best film mentioned so far, but it's over two days.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

SEARCH (as in now dammit!):The Front Page, starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, directed by Billy Wilder, classic all the way. Takes place over the course of a day. Fucking brilliant. My favourite newspaper movie.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Boys in the Band, A Wedding.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

'His Girl Friday'! (aka 'The Front Page' 'cept with Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant [and Ralph Bellamy])

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Philadelphia Story (I think it's 24 hours, anyway).

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet Smell of Success is probably the best film mentioned so far, but it's over two days.

Damn, I was worried about that. I think it still counts though.

And I'll go to bat for Before Sunrise anywhere, any time.

How come no one's mentioned La Haine?

le slutsky, Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Not sure if these take place in one day: Sleuth, Rashomon

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Swimming To Cambodia

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Also all the (proper) Star Wars films

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew: it's movies that take place over the course of one day, not movies that FEEL LIKE they're 24 hours long. Ha ha.

Also, La Haine is awesome.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

erm, timecode of course!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

groundhog day!!

jones (actual), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Groundhog Day starts the night before, no?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I think the beginning of Groundhog Day is actually the day before, the day when they travel to the town.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

DOA? haven't seen it in a while, but I think it's all one day?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Last Waltz of course.
Wizard of Oz even

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty sure DOA is. Gotta go w/the '40s version of course

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Midnight Madness!

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait, I think there is some expository days before they play the game.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Night on Earth

And yeh, Groundhog day starts the day before and actually ends the day after.

martin mushrush (mushrush), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Where's My Car I can't decide whether search or destroy.

Search: The parts where they are only looking for their car.
Destroy: all the business about aliens. Aliens ruined so many movies for me.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Carey = anti-extraterrestrialite

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Aliens ruined so many movies for me

Ruins a lot of perfectly good videogames too. Like, Half-Life was killer when you were running around fighting soldiers, but as soon as you end up on another planet it's just gay.

martin mushrush (mushrush), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ok bah no groundhog day.

bad day at black rock?

jones (actual), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill and Ted's Excellent Muthafuckin Adventure...Search or Destroy as you see fit (I say: Search).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Goonies? One day?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Touch of Evil?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"HEEEEEEY YOOOOOUUUUU GUUUUUUUUUUYYYYYS!!!!!!!"

translation: you are correct Oops. Bonus points will be allotted because you've also chosen the best movie evah. Advance to round 3.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

haha changing lanes
the taking of pelham 1-2-3

jones (actual), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but surely Bill and Ted's excellent Adventure takes place over several centuries...

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

But for the protagonists, it's all one day.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Phantom Chariot, although that's kind of cheating, since so much of the film is taken up by flashbacks (and flashbacks within flashbacks etc.)

Before Sunrise is great; it's a total crowd-pleaser in the best sense. La Haine I remember seeming really sensationalistic and bad although I guess it's somthing of a touchstone of the "new French cinema" now.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

For some reason this thread has got me thinking about M which while it doesn't take place in a single day, compresses time in the most virtuosic and breathless way possible--right up until the harrowing ending that is.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Any excuse to mention that movie is okay by me.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I'm out of breath just thinking about it. Wow.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

$22 at deepdiscountdvd.com (free shipping but we in IL have to pay tax) Must.Resist.Spending.Money.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait for the restored version to come out with English subtitles (right now it's on a German DVD without subtitles). The difference is pretty striking:

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Also search Werckmeister Harmonies, if I recall correctly.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist, Playtime!

Dazed & Confused, Slacker, Suburbia (well, I guess just about EVERY Richard Linklater film then, huh?)

Yup, and don't forget Tape.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist, Playtime!

Oh yeah, duh.

And Jour de fete, too.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

search:
Miracle Mile
Labyrinth
Bicycle Thief
24 hours (TV show)
(i may wrong about these being one day)

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

predator, cube, hypercube, goonies

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

dinner with andre

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Kids take place over one day?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep. Good one nick. Advance to round 4.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't the Die Hard movies fit into this category? Actually any number of recent American action films.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

panic room

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing is that a lot of movies like that have a shot the next day at the end of the movie for closure, and therefore wouldn't really fit in this category

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Clock with Judy Garland--almost.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

High fucking Noon?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm having a terrible time thinking of movies, even though I do really love this device. I'm gonna search: Buffalo 66

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Destroy: Picnic at Hanging Rock. (I know a lot of people like it, but I found it slow and too preoccupied with symbolism.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't glengarry glen ross happen over an evening and the following morning

ron (ron), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Clockwise with John Cleese. (And I want bonus points for getting that one before any of you Brits!)

jewelly (jewelly), Friday, 18 April 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, Jewelly's right! Well done. Saw that in theaters, I did.

Aren't the two new Matrix films supposed to take place within the period of twenty-hours? Twenty-two of which should be devoted to Reeves taking a beating, but anyway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned why do you hate everything today?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I only started hating Keanu Reeves today?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Last Waltz of course.

No. The concert and studio stuff were obviously from different days. And the interviews too?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, hate everything? He sent some love my way, and my life is richer for it. So go fuck a light socket, Amateurist.

jewelly (jewelly), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I just get tired of all the variations on "gee, this sucks" with no further elaboration that keep appearing on various threads. The smiley faces don't make it any less frustrating. It's very Geir-like in fact.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, yeah, less yappin' and more light-socket-fuckin'.

jewelly (jewelly), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

bzzzzt

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Geez, that was over quick.

jewelly (jewelly), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Namechecking American Graffitti, but I can't decide if it's classic, dud, or both. Well, Wolfman is classic

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 19 April 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

heavy metal parking lot

dr. strangelove

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, we're 80 posts in, and nobody has mentioned "12 Angry Men". You people all suck.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 19 April 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

slutsky (slutsky), Sunday, 20 April 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Picnic at Hanging Rock is more than just one day, I think.

Citizen Kane? (not counting the flashbacks, I think Thompson might spend a bit longer than 24 hours looking for Rosebud)

That Andy Warhol film that's a 24-hour shot of the Empire State Building.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 20 April 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom did kind of kick everyone's asses on this thread.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 20 April 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Back to the Future (the first one). It does if we are playing the time trvale card.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 April 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah... DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE. Great use of the one day format.

PVC (peeveecee), Thursday, 1 May 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

...but bad use of handcamera.

The Celebration took place in one day IIRC.

Frühlingsmute (Wintermute), Thursday, 1 May 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Rope, Running Time (both of these films are in "real time", ie. the events on the screen happen during a time period exactly the length of the film), Mystery Train, Permanent Vacation (Jim Jarmusch seems to like the form), Blue in the Face, 25 Watts, Cabaret Balkan, The Grande Bouffe, The Ice Storm (if I remember correctly), Magnolia, Mother and Son.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 2 May 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)
