I've not been in! Just past. Looks a bit scary and I'm a wimp

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Do 73s still have a swan on the destination roll?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

what like a picture of a swan? i was thinking of the 76 at the time, which also has tottenham swan listed on destination roll, it seems inpossibly far away, from a time forgotten. i wonder if it is like 1956 at tottenham swan sometimes

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, a little swan sillhouette.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i would like that on a polo shirt

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 18 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, you would.

rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

did they use the same swan graphic that they used for Leaside District?

My colleague who rcords under the name S.P.U.N.K.L.E. was in a band called Vehicle Derek who played a gig at the Swan. He told me that most of the audience looked like the gig was the highlight of their lives.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i shall look for the swan design. i might get lucky and manage a photo!

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 27 April 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Did that work?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yep!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 April 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Although I grew up in nearby Edmonton, I rarely had cause to go down into Tottenham. I had some friends who lived in White Hart Lane (where the football ground, famously, isn't...it's round the corner in the High Road) and when I was unemployed I had to walk past the Spurs ground on my way to the unemployment benefit office, but I have difficulty recalling the relative locations of Philip Lane, the High Cross and the Swan. Maybe I should travel on the W4 for the entirety of its route (the Oakthorpe Park Estate terminus is very close to my parents' house) rather than just as far as Wood Green tube, with the aim of finding out the answer to the above. Or maybe not.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 28 April 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand should apply to be Keeper of the Queen's Swans and put that swan pic in the sig file of the application email.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 28 April 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like pubs which are names of areas which are no longer there. cf Nags Head (Holloway) , The Favourite (Crouch End) etc.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 28 April 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bought some Tottenham Swan earings. There are also patches and pins. And Gloria Vanderbilt polos can do for the Tottenham Swan look in a pinch.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 10 May 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, have you gone insane?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 10 May 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

They are actually made by Fred Flare but when I see a white swan I think *Tottenham*. I don't even know what *Tottenham* is.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 10 May 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't ever change.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 10 May 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

In this case, more so than the general one, ignorance is heavenly bliss.

By the way my post above makes no sense. The areas are still there, the pubs aren't.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth explained it to me yesterday; it was much more alluring before:( But we'll always have Swansea.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What is a Tottenham? No one really knows.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i have lost the urge to visit

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i am all about battersea bridge southside and newham general hospital now

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

battersea bridge southside, home of QVC.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary hurts me in my heart.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I worked round the corner from that QVC building at the time when ITV Digital (which was also HQ'ed there) went tits-up... you'd walk past in the morning and all would be fine, then on the way home there'd be several windows missing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

were there bodies on the floor beneath the broken windows matt?

i saw Tottenham Swan on the front of the 73 yesterday and thought of you :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Tim; does your team have a nice mascot?

Torment him not!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

But I really want to know his mascot!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm really tormented.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 16 May 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha

so, my TS earings, if I keep wearing them in the shower, are the swans gonna turn green?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i had to hold myself back from buying tottenham swan stationary at lunch break today -- but i dunno -- maybe if someone would send me tim h's address . . .

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 May 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

today i went to tottenham swan! it was disappointing. for a start its not even really in tottenham! its in seven sisters!

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 17 May 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

and where are the pics? seven sisters sounds nice and poetic too

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 May 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

we drove past it today, Gareth, it's well North of South Tottenham station, I'd say it was at the bottom end of Tottenham proper. Strange thing, it's not even the biggest pub on that crossroads!

chris (chris), Sunday, 18 May 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it is confusing because outside the swan there is a roadsign saying straight on for tottenham and enfield, ie, you're not in tottenham yet pal. phillips lane is actually N15 (seven sisters/south tottenham), but if the doorway is on the A10 then i guess that must be the moment at which N17 actually starts.

Mary, of course there are pictures, but they are not developed yet;)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 19 May 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

those postcode boundaries are well weird! If you go to Turnpike Lane tube station there are still further manifestations of their weirdness. Turnpike Lane itself is N8 (Hornsey), yet the end of Westbury Avenue is N15 (South Tottenham) and Wood Green High Road is N22 (um, Wood Green, natch).

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 19 May 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the boundaries are usually pretty sensible. i mean, turnpike lane is a junction, a meeting point, rather than an area as such. so it makes sense for the postcode boundaries to work that way in regard to turnpike lane

gareth (gareth), Monday, 19 May 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I noticed on the street signs while going down the A10 north to south yesterday that all of a sudden we went from an E postcode on the signs to an N1 postcode. It was a pretty major junction though.

chris (chris), Monday, 19 May 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds like you were approaching dalston junction from stoke newington? the east side of the road is E8 and later on E2, the west is N16 and then N1. the majority of the A10 is in N though

gareth (gareth), Monday, 19 May 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, from what I remember it was just after Dalston Kingsland station.

chris (chris), Monday, 19 May 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

someone please expalin to me why i should not iron a tottenham swan patch onto my light blue adidas zip up

Mary (Mary), Monday, 19 May 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You should!

felicity (felicity), Monday, 19 May 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Better yet find a Tottenham Hotspur patch and iron that on.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 19 May 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, go on. We're a big club and deserve to be represented across the ocean.

one year passes...
the 73 doesn't go to tottenham swan anymore, it mainly stops in stokey and "at peak times" goes to seven sisters...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

also it is TEH BENDY

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I went! About a year ago. It is horrible.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

I caught a bus home from Tottenham Swan about an hour ago! Is there a cosmic significance to this thread being revived within minutes of that bus journey? I think there must be.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
Things I know this morning which I didn't know last night: if you arrive at the bus stop at 12.45am outside Seven Sisters tube, you should not be fooled by the sign which says the N73 stops there, as this will convince you stand there in a state of growing frustration until 1.50am without any sign of an N73 and then you will give in a pay for a taxi. You will then get up the next morning and, via the power of the internet, discover that for some unknown reason the N73 (instead of making the long trip from Victoria to Walthamstow via the bus stop outside Seven Sisters tube) makes only a short trip from The Swan to Walthamstow for the first two hours. You will be frustrated, not just by the fact that if you'd known this you could have just taken the short walk from Seven Sisters to The Swan and got home much, much earlier, but also because you discover that the N73 finally visits Seven Sisters about three minutes after you climbed into the taxi.
