In contrast to the one day movie thread, what are some good movies that take place over a very long time, like a whole life time.

Last Emperor
Young Indiana Jones Cronicles (TV show)
The Grand Illusion
The Children of Paradise

The Human Condition. 10 hour long Japanese film about WW2 in which viewing the film seems almost as long as the era covered (Manchurian invasion ---> Japan's defeat).

GREED ROX U R ALL GAY

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ok follow up question:
movies that were FILMED over a number of years.
i seem to remember watching some movie in high school where the first half was filmed when the stars were relly young and the second half was made like 10 yrs later when they were all grown up.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That wasn't a documentary, was it?

hoops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If documentaries count for that, Michael Apted's Up series ROOLZ that category -- six films made thus far in seven-year increments: 7-Up, 14-Up, 21-Up, etc. Is that what you're thinking of, Chaki?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I was thinking of.

hoops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you change your name to "hoops" just b/c Hstencil wrote it wrong?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Not exactly:
Orgasms are overrated. I prefer listening to Orcestral Maneuvers in the Dark in the dark.
-----------------------------------------------------
I blame stencil for stealing my 'h'.

THAT BASTARD DID IT AGAIN
---------------------------------------------------
You should change your name to hoops, then you could blame me for stealing two h's.
-- hstencil
------------------------------------------
I kinda like how hoops sounds/looks. Plus, I'm no joke on the court so I wouldn't be frontin'.(ask jaymc)

hoops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, missed that thread. Right on.

S:"Hype!"

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

was the film of virginia woolf's 'orlando' any good? cos the book's a peach.

matthew james (matthew james), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah "orlando" was very tony and too-well-appointed but i liked it. i saw it on a date with this gorgeous greek girl though so i dunno how much attention i was paying.

coincidentally last night i saw sally potter's "the man who cried" which was really very good -- i don't know why it was totally ignored here.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I missed The Man Who Cried because it came out as my C. Ricci obsession was severely waning. Although that didn't stop me from renting Pumpkin a couple months ago.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

she looks really gorgeous in it and bats her eyes a lot. also it was made before she lost several stone so thankfully she's still a bit zaftig yow. johnny depp plays a part that i can't help thinking is a bit self-parodic ... all mysterious burning glances and high cheekbones. cate blanchett does a very good russian accent and john turturro is good as a boastful and pathetic italian opera singer. the whole thing alternates between arty felicities and totally over-the-top sequences but it works.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Adaptation incorporates the history of the world or possibly the universe, so it wins.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

zaftig = yes!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"Adaptation incorporates the history of the world or possibly the universe, so it wins. "

Or was it just what he was thinking about putting in the movie?

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Godfather movies obvously.

The Nightmare on Elm Street/ Halloween/ Friday the 13th/ Sleepaway Camp/ Night of the Living Dead series (and any and all horror/ sci fi franchises including Star Wars as well)...

And the Godzilla movies. The charming old Japanese ones, of course, and not the big budget American mess.

Nah, not worth the ribbing.

I like that film, darn it. Others who like it should say so. Cast off your fears! Those who rib are haters.
