TS: brown liquor vs. clear liquor

I love a girl who loves her whiskey. I cringe when someone orders a vodka martini.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Sunday, 3 October 2004 04:45 (twenty years ago)

Where does tequila fall in this hierarchy?

Laura E (laurae55), Sunday, 3 October 2004 04:51 (twenty years ago)

depends on the type of tequila, ive seen some pretty muddy tequila.

i still drank it though.

darragh.mac (darragh.mac), Sunday, 3 October 2004 04:53 (twenty years ago)

Tequila is ambrosial gold. I like people 20% more when they like tequila.

Laura E (laurae55), Sunday, 3 October 2004 04:56 (twenty years ago)

Tequila is the odd bird. Sometimes it's clear, and other times it's merely beige, but it's flavor is so distinct, and liking it a lot takes such a commitment, that I'd say brown.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Sunday, 3 October 2004 04:57 (twenty years ago)

But by the latter criteria, gin (which is CLASSIC) would also be brown.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 3 October 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Vodka is my drink of choice. I've never been able to stomach more flavoursome liquor.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 3 October 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago)

vodka is also good.

I also occasionally drink whisky, though, so I'm not a 100% clear-drinks person.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 3 October 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I have to have vodka with shitloads of mixer or it makes me gag. Gin and tonic is great, but whisky is king. Rum is also good. So brown.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 3 October 2004 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Rum, of course, crosses the clear/brown divide.

Sudden flashback to last New Year's Eve: walking along the street with friends, swigging dark rum out of the bottle and shouting YARR, ME HEARTIES at frequent intervals - on our way to the city-centre church graveyard where we'd arranged to meet everyone for midnight.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 3 October 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm not very down with the brown, although I aspire to be.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 3 October 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Both and neither. Whisky and gin = top stuff, brandy and whiskey = good, vodka = neutral, tequila and both sorts of rum = only if the others are unavailable.

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 3 October 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I go with brown. When I see clear liquors I have a hard time believing they're any different from each other, even though I can sometimes taste the difference. In particular, I have a hard time believing there's "good" and "bad" vodka. Generally I'd rather have whiskey or tequilla any day, but gin can be good.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 4 October 2004 03:08 (twenty years ago)

the difference btwn good and bad vodka is purity.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Monday, 4 October 2004 03:48 (twenty years ago)

Brown.

Gold Teeth, why do you want a girl who loves her whiskey?

I don't like girls that drink. My lady likes Bloody Marys and can barely handle two of 'em. I'm not interested in getting into any drinking contests with the woman I'm involved with. Next thing you know you're arm wrestling.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 4 October 2004 03:51 (twenty years ago)

whiskey, tequila, period.

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 4 October 2004 03:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't want to arm wrestle, but since she started dating me, my girl has started ordering whiskey neat at a bar with confidence and authority. Hott.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Monday, 4 October 2004 03:57 (twenty years ago)

brown! unless there's an open bar on something else, i usually drink bourbon on the rocks. which is probably a little too manly for my persona.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 4 October 2004 04:05 (twenty years ago)

nah, I'm a huge unmanly wimp and my favorite drinks are tequila or whisky, straight-up.

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 4 October 2004 04:06 (twenty years ago)

I go with the clears, but only because the hangovers are less bad. In terms of taste, I'm definitely with the browns, but they make me hurt too much the next day.

That said, my new favourite drink in the world is buttershots, which is sort of butterscotch coloured. Yummmmm.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Generally more of a brown girl, but any porto in a stormo.

What about GREEN? Yuck absinthe.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but Midori! Creme De Menthe! Erm...

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:00 (twenty years ago)

erm, surely this thread should be brown liquor versus colourless liquor. as the brown liquors are also clear, unless they are not obviously.

Ed (dali), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:16 (twenty years ago)

you cringe, when someone orders a vodka martini?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:21 (twenty years ago)

yeah. Not so much because it's clear, but because it's not even a martini. If you want vodka, shoot it or mix it, but don't call it a martini. And also, don't shit in my mouth and call it a sundae.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 03:06 (twenty years ago)

What about GREEN? Yuck absinthe.

Pernod! It's not just alcohol, it's punishment!

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 03:06 (twenty years ago)

BTW: I love a good martini. Love it. Drink 'em all night. As good as the best scotch, when made right. I like an olive or two, but a "dirty" martini with olive juice in it is for amateurs.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 03:25 (twenty years ago)

a vodka martini is a vodka martini.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:41 (twenty years ago)

As much as I want to love brown liquor, my new booze of choice is Grey Goose vodka. It's hard to beat for buzz and minimal hangover.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:45 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand Grey goose vodka.

1) It has a realy dull tatse
2) It's french and as good as the french reputation for many kinds of booze i just don't reckon the french have got a handle on the voska thing. It's on a par with the Rachmaninov or Tolstoy vodka you get in Lidl.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 08:01 (twenty years ago)

I only recently switched from Stoli, but isn't Vodka supposed to be dull tasting? I've also been drinking my housemate's 'Vigor' vodka which he brought back from Turkey - it's noticeably harsher...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 08:07 (twenty years ago)

It's not that I don't like vodka, it's just that there's generally something else to drink. Like whisky.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Stoi is a good standby but fairly uninteresting (much cheaper than goose anyway). Russki Standard, Flagman and Seven feet are good russians (all of which I've seen in UK supermarkets son't know about the us). All fairly rounded and full bodied. Finlandia is a good standby that's availible everywhere. SPutnk is a great mixing vodka, very similar to stoli but it has a better label.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 08:23 (twenty years ago)

Liqour is RUBBISH. It's just a watery parsley sauce. Anyone who orders liquor as opposed to lovely lovely GRAVY on their pie and mash is a peon (no offence to my great friend who does but she is American and cannot justifiably be expected to know the noble troof of pies + mash + gravy innit).

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 09:16 (twenty years ago)

Congeners are toxic byproducts of distillation and fermentation. These chemical impurities are the substances responsible for giving each drink its individual taste, color and aroma. Congeners do not cause drunkenness, but do add to your hangover.

Some spirits are higher in congeners than others. Red wine, brandies, and whiskies are usually higher than other types of alcohol. Each spirit has its own identifying congeners which give it a unique flavor. The liver must process these, so it is best to avoid mixing your spirits.

The distillation process has a direct relation to the amount of congeners found in your spirits. The pot still is generally used to produce high end brandies, malt whiskies, and dark rums for example. These are more flavorful as they contain more congeners. The Coffey still, developed in the early 19th century, is a continuous column still where most congeners are removed and almost pure ethanol is produced. This is also known as a neutral spirit. To reduce or eliminate remaining impurities this distilled alcohol can now be diluted, filtered through charcoal, and then rectified (redistilled). Many distillers now combine both methods of distillation to give the end product the best of both worlds.

In 1999, Jeffrey Wiese of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco and colleagues from the University of California, San Francisco, began investigating a series of studies on hangovers that began in 1965. In one experimental setting, 33 percent of patients who consumed 1.5 g/kg of body weight of bourbon experienced a severe hangover. However, only 3 percent of those who drank the same amount of vodka experienced the same.*

A rule of thumb is the clearer your spirit, the fewer congeners it has, and the less severe the hangover. Highly filtered vodkas generally contain the smallest amount. Another tip is in the price of your spirits. The cheaper it is, the less it has been processed to remove the impurities.

The main dish sold is pie and mash; a minced beef pie and mashed potato served with a generous helping of liquor (a type of parsley sauce). Liquor has a green colour which is derived from the parsley(not alcohol).

This is some for-fuck's-sake bullshit, jjj.

i always thought i didn't like rum either, but recently went to the fucking raddest tiki bar in sf called Smuggler's Cove. i thought tiki drinks were just totally sweet and nasty, but the bartender was great. i told him i usually drank whiskeys but i wanted to open my horizons and he made me a drink up on the spot w/rum. something he didnt even know what it was, but it was pretty great. he also steered me towards some more trad juice based tiki drinks that weren't too sweet and fucking fantastic. he was also a really nice guy and answered some of my noob home bartender questions and even steered me towards a really great tiki iphone app. totally recommended http://beachbumberry.com/tiki-app/

and the whole other thing w/rum and tiki bars is that you think the whole hawaiian shirts, pirate ship, lounge music theme is silly, but if you really think about it, so is prohibition stuff, dudes w/curly mustaches and vests or suspenders. it's all an act. disneylandish.

ok i made this:

1.5 oz death's door white whisky
.5 oz dolin blanc
.5 oz. benedictine
3 dashes orange bitters

it's interesting, and not half bad although something in the finish is off for me. benedictine is fairly difficult to mix with imo--i'd be curious to try this with all dolin, or with cointreau or maraschino or something else instead.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 19 March 2011 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

what's benedictine like? wiki calls it a medicinal aromatic herbal beverage. is it similar to like fernet or something? my new recent favorite purchase is allspice pimento dram. super spiced. wonderful for winter cocktails, but in every recipe i've followed i've had to cut it by at least half. it's super overpowering.

the lion's tail from here is outstanding, but i cut the pimento in half and the lime almost in half (the wife can't deal w/citrus all that well)
http://drinkboston.com/2008/05/21/i-say-pimento-you-say-allspice/

jaxon, Saturday, 19 March 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

totally agree w/you about allspice dram--it's a great flavor but it tends to sort of blow up your drinks.

benedictine is much sweeter than fernet and certainly doesn't have that menthol thing going, in fact it's not really bitter at all. its sweetness is kind of like honey and then there's a lot of herbal flavors in it as well.

benedictine, maraschino, allspice dram, etc. they all really jump out and you have to be careful. exception is green chartreuse--can never get enough of that stuff.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 19 March 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

I inadvertently went through my twenties crossing clear liquors off a list of things I'd never be able to drink again, but there's got to be one that's different from the gins and vodkas and moonshines and clear tequilas that I could actually order. What is Ouzo? Is it good? Also, I've only ever had spiced/dark rum as far as I know. What's white rum like?

ouzo is gross imo. i prefer dark rum to white - but maybe i just havent had good white rum

just sayin, Tuesday, 7 July 2015 03:34 (nine years ago)

Ouzo is similar to arak and many other rather raw near-eastern anise-flavored liquors. It is not mellow stuff. It is traditionally drunk with water added, which turns it a milky color. I can't say it is worth a special trip just to drink some, but if you are in Greece and some is offered to you, try it. You might like it.

Aimless, Tuesday, 7 July 2015 03:53 (nine years ago)

yea if you like anise you will like ouzo

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 7 July 2015 05:31 (nine years ago)

If you have ever had Pastis, it is pretty similar. Ouzo is really refreshing with ice and water. It has a bad rep because tourists tend to pound shots of it.
