mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 3 October 2004 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Cow Bomb Lake is so much better

zappi (joni), Sunday, 3 October 2004 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Most people pick scissors first. After that, it's all psychological.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 3 October 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Strange mystical powers.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 3 October 2004 19:25 (twenty years ago)

www.worldrps.com is a fabulous resource.

ricki spaghetti, Sunday, 3 October 2004 19:33 (twenty years ago)

That is a pretty funny site - I like this bit...

"Chaos Play
Proponents of the “Chaos School” of RPS try to select a throw randomly. An opponent cannot know what you do not know yourself. In theory, the only way to defeat a random throw is with another random throw – and then only thirty-three percent of the time. Critics of this strategy insist that there is no such thing as a random throw. Human beings will always use some impulse or inclination to choose a throw, and will therefore settle into unconscious but nonetheless predicable patterns. The Chaos School has been dwindling in recent years as tournament statistics show the greater effectiveness of other strategies."

But the 'Mystical' players are probably the most pretentious...

"“Mystical” Schools
Finally, it bears mentioning that there are also “Mystical Schools” of RPS. These instruct students to select their throw based on some inner force, higher power, or telepathic premonition. Such approaches vary so widely among themselves and results are so mixed (or mixed-up!) that there is no point in trying to catalogue or categorize them. Nevertheless, the well-trained RPS player will be aware that these schools exist and know their basic tenets."

Also, 'Cow Bomb Lake'? How could cow ever win? How could lake ever lose?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 3 October 2004 19:42 (twenty years ago)

I love the site, but their online trainer hasn't improved my game noticeably. You have to know your opponent.

ricki spaghetti, Sunday, 3 October 2004 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I hope they all have outfits to match their 'schools', with the chaos lot wearing devil horns and black, and the 'mystic' school dressed like monks. Gambit players either like Gambit from X-Men or boozy old men that hang out in bookies.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:08 (twenty years ago)

also, 'Cow Bomb Lake'? How could cow ever win? How could lake ever lose?

er, cow drinks lake, lake diffuses bomb. of course!

zappi (joni), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. I guess. Why not 'cow drowns in lake'?. It just seemed that neither a cow, nor a bomb (short of thermonuclear) could do much damage to a lake. But I guess that's off the point as long as there is an order.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:16 (twenty years ago)

it's one thirsty cow. and anyway just trying to do the handsigns is most of the entertainment anyway.

zappi (joni), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Chris is completely right, btw.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago)

We used to play this as "UFO-cow-bacteria". It went like this: UFO abducts cow. Bacteria infects UFO. Cow chews bacteria.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I believe you. I was just confused by these three objects. Got a handle on it now.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Another version was "laser gun - force shield - mutant power".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago)

cat - tinfoil - microwave

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I agree. Chris is correct, it is psychological. Rock is also a popular opener, though some back away because it appears too obvious, opting instead for scissors.

ricki spaghetti, Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:26 (twenty years ago)

I've won it several times like this: people often think their opponent is gonna pick scissors, because it's the most obvious one. So they pick rock. Knowing this, I pick paper.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Do you play just once, or several times in succession?

ricki spaghetti, Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Symplistic (shmuel), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago)

One reason scissors is most popular is because scissors is the most natural handshape to throw your hand into. Rock feels like you're not doing anything -- it's hardly a throw -- and paper takes too much work. Scissors feels best.

I used to play my brother at this all the time, and he rarely won a throw.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Actually use rocks

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Or scissors.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 4 October 2004 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Would the best strategy would be to randomly play each move as a person playing another strategy would?

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago)

My psychological game is mostly based around whether or not the person is likely to throw the same thing or not, to fake you out. It's split-second battles of reverse-reverse-reverse psychology.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm an empath, and I always tie. I've done it 20 or more times in a row.

briania (briania), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago)

What about playing "Dog Man Star" ?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago)

That takes much longer.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Rock Paper Scissors Spock Lizard!
