this Tron cycles game is rocking my world - its quite a headfuck at first but you get used to it. i wanted to design a game very like this years ago but came to the conclusion it would be too tough cos of the viewpoint required - but they've just thought 'fuck it'. the trick is to look at the radar thing more than the dazzling 3D graphics i think.

3D Pong is a fantastic game - simple, obvious, but very tricky to master. Honestly, try it a few times - you'll lose heavily to start with, but the learning curve (well, how much you have to practice) is just about right.

JBR, I was very keen on that, until I got too good at it. When you get to the top rank level, at least on the two installations of it I have had, one of the missions can cause a crash. And when you get to (last time I played) about 160 million the basic mechanics go wrong and you can't shoot straight from the flippers at all. I suspect that the testing didn't get to that kind of level - it takes like five hours on one game to get to that kind of score.

JBR, my best twenty or thirty scores are all above the best 'world record' I've been able to find for Space Cadet, and you don't hit those problems until that kind of absurd score, so it may only be me who is aware of these bugs in the software.

well, you don't have be a 3D guru by any means (hell, I'm definitely not), but you do need some trigonometry and some basic knowledge of circular/spheroid functions or what not. Thing is, I dunno if there are too many books out there with a good example of this. Your best bet is to go to the Macromedia dev site, maybe ask a question on one of the forums there, or sniff for a good code example.

I understand now. Before I was just flying though the sky, bouncing on loads of things, getting a few thousand points then falling to the ground within a few seconds. Now I am getting a few hundred but I can see what is going on. I have abandoned it though, because I have not instantly mastered it.

My best is now about 227,000,000. I'd have miles higher scores if there weren't a couple of very serious bugs when you get into very high scores - first one when you finish a particular mission at the highest rank, which crashes the game, the other I've not pinned down what brings it on, but it generally appears somewhere between 150-200 million, and makes it unplayable - the flippers stop obeying basic laws of physics, and you can't aim the ball at all. I think I had to throw away anything from 20-40 extra balls on most of my highest scores.

I get to the 150 million region every week, takes three hours. Some people here complain that the game "crashes", flippers go bananas, "the laws of physics stop working"... Bullshit. It's all about the right attitude. Either you got it or you don't..
