i'll be 36 next week. thanx.

€rik, Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm even worse and wear trainers without laces or velcro - you just slip em on and they have a natural comfort fit - i'll still be wearing them when i'm 90 probably (hopefully)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, if only because my friend got married wearing a pair of red velcro sneakers. Check out the devil-sign action. Best wedding photo EVAH.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Sunday, 20 April 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

the impudence of being ernest's friend

€rik, Sunday, 20 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm afraid to say I've always found them dud. I can be very critical of sneakers and shoes, however, and find it best not to look at people's feet.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Confession: In high school I bought a pair, thinking: Comfy and convenient; I'll start a trend; I'll be making a statement; it's so uncool it'll be considered cool ... I'm no trail-blazer, though. I couldn't withstand the ridicule, and let them collect dust in the back of my closet after wearing them to only one day of school.

jewelly (jewelly), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The only shoe you'll ever need:

Others come and go, but the Chuck is forever.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

As someone who (used to) jog 5 miles in the morning, though, and who has tripped over shoelaces that came untied and fallen flat on her face on more than one occasion, and who has also struggled to UNtie laces that she double-knotted to avoid such hazards ... as one who is impatient to get out of her shoes the MOMENT she walks through the door at home and has ruined EXPENSIVE shoes by ripping them off repeatedly while they're still laced tight to her feet ... I must say I'm still enchanted by the idea of velcro tennis shoes, and wish the rest of the world would come to accept and embrace them.

jewelly (jewelly), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't imagine actually being *enchanted* with velcro sneakers.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean: Enchanted more by the idea of them than the reality, I guess.

Also I'm left-handed and my righty parents gave up trying to teach me to tie shoes like a normal person, so I still use the two-bunny-ears method and, when I think about it, I feel inferior and slow-witted because of it. To be honest, I never realized how emotional I could get about tennis shoes till this thread came along.

Actually I think I'm more enchanted by the idea of living on a Hawaiian island and dispensing with shoes altogether.

jewelly (jewelly), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Velcro sneakers are so obviously the only way to go. There's nothing inherently more interesting, visually speaking, about laces than velcro straps, and velcro is ridiculously convenient. And it makes that great ripping sound!

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 20 April 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I will never take another word Chris says seriously ever again.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 20 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mean. I happen to agree with Chris fully! Though I last had a pair back in 1985.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 April 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean, you and your lace fetish can go elsewhere. ;-)

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 20 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The shoes I wear the most right now are a pair of 3 velcro shoes (not sneakers, but shoes). Yet, I am still to lazy to unvelcro them to take them off.

Carey (Carey), Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

And if they would velcro the walls too, we could walk up them like Spiderman or something! Hurrah!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just gotten into velcro-closures recently, because I was getting obsessive about not having any unsightly twists in the laces of my lace-up shoes, which meant it was taking forever to put them on in the morning. (If this is unclear, check out the converse hi-tops pictured upthread and notice how nice and flat the laces are -- that takes time to achieve/maintain!)

Aesthetically, I think velcro-closures can look just as fine as lace-ups if they're well designed.

(Martin I don't think we're talking about velcro on the SOLES, although that could be fun...)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't see the point of these shoes if I don't get to climb walls.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a pair of velcro sneakers and they are grrreat. The only problem with velcro is that it wears out a bit after a while. Apart from that they're just lovely.

I have a digital watch, too, you future-hating bastards.

nabisco (nabisco), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have a velcro plastic wallet, which I love, but I feel like a complete dweeb sometimes when going to pay for things. Because there's that big rrrriiiiiippppp that just seems so rude and low brow. Sometimes when doing a businessy type of lunch or dinner I foget about the wallet and will try to get money out of it while it's still in my bag.

Carey (Carey), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Velcro sneakers=just for the elderly and retarded and people with no arms or head or legs.

Skottie, Sunday, 20 April 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a pair of velcro shoes, a couple of grey suede square-toes with a big bold swath of velcro action in place of a buckle. They were so awesome I got a pair of black leather dress shoes that are a lot like them. Eventually the gray suede ones wore out, which was a shame. The black dress ones I still wear once in a while, the way they're made you wouldn't really know they were velcro until I took them off.

I now have a pair of black suede hikers with 3x velcro strips each, they go up to the ankle and are nice for snowy weather. They look like black moon boots.

I also have two or three pairs of loafer-style shoes for when it's extra-lazy time. I hate laces if I can avoid them.

New Balance MW805VK

My next shoe purchase.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 20 April 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Skottie, why do the people with no legs need sneakers?

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I just unearthed my white velcro Stan Smiths from the closet today -- in anticipation of summer. Velcro was a little hotter about 3 years ago -- when Converse did their Japanese edition version -- but it's still good.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

shelltoes are all you need.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Velcro sneakers are lovely - the more old person-like the better. I want a pair badly, but I still have a leftover neurosis from 2nd grade when I was real obsessed with having them as tight as possible on my feet so I would constantly be ripping them open and tightening them. Once I thought that quiet-story-time would be a good time to do this, and when I was finished I noticed that everyone including the teacher was silently staring/scowling at me. It was very embarassing.
But I think I could get that shit under control today...

stolenbus (stolenbus), Monday, 21 April 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Skottie, why do the people with no legs need sneakers?

Exaaaaaaactly, Grasshopper...

Skottie, Monday, 21 April 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Velcro sneakers are almost always ugly and designed for - if not the old or stupid - the godamned lazy. If one ever visits the shoe department at his local Wal-Mart (where those, like I, without trust funds are sometimes forced to shop), he will notice that the velcro sneakers are always pushed the farthest back on the rack. Now, if FUCKIN' WAL-MART is embarrassed to sell the product, then you know something is wrong.

gery forbes (gery), Monday, 21 April 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Stop being incensed by my convenience.

Stop hating Wal-Mart.

Stop hating the future.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 21 April 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Velcro was invented by the Swiss and used by NASA, so it can never be anything except right-on and fashionable. It's technology you name your cats after, not that stupid Nike technology for technology's sake stuff which is hopelessly uncool.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 21 April 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with nabisco.
no one should be that outraged by velcro shoes.
i think they're cute.

stolenbus (stolenbus), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

as a parent of an impatient child, velco = genius

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "you future-hating bastards"!!! i love the word bastards.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 27 December 2003 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

who has tripped over shoelaces that came untied and fallen flat on her face on more than one occasion

In my case I thought of velcro'd shoes as something for kids who are too little to be able to tie their own shoelaces. Until the day my shoelaces came untied, and tangled with the pedal of the exercise bike I was riding. I haven't bought a pair yet, but since then they seemed more logical.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 27 December 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Gosh I was just thinking about getting another pair of Velcro trainers. I had those Japanese velcro ones but they died, as all things must from time to time. Then again I also want some plimsolls. And some VANS! I might even buy some large trousers!!! And hang around Slam City Sk8z!

sk8r grrl, Saturday, 27 December 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Come to think of it, I think I am going to make 2004 (! shit!) a year where I don't wear Converse. Have they been sold out by Nike yet, pop pickers? I reckon it'll be Vans, Tigers and Woolworths plimsolls for me.

(Although admittedly yr bogstandard Converse is el cheapo so I will probably end up with a red pair of those anyway).

red shoes, Saturday, 27 December 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

laces are archaic

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 27 December 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I have velcro and laces on my shoes!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 December 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Let it be said that although I am coming down on the side of the plimsoll, for some reason I don't like the checkered ones available at the moment.

Of course the one to really go for is the Dunlop but not the velcro ones with fat laces WHAT WOULD THE MANICS SAY IF THEY SAW.

Aja you have the coolest shoes out of anyone! What colour are they!

who, Saturday, 27 December 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

White.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 December 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

They have to be. I wear them to school. We can only wear solid color shoes and the color must be black, white, or gray. No one wears gray though.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 December 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)
