The 80s Sitcom Bread - Classic or Dud?

I say dud. It did Liverpool no favours.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Very dud, certainly.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder what ppl from Liverpool made of it? I'm not saying it invented the stereotype of Liverpudlians being dishonest and work-shy, but it certainly reinforced it. And it led to half the kids in my class at school using Joey Boswell's annoying greeting, "Greetings!"

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

incredibly dud, altho the 8 year old me says 'Classic', as it was my favourite programme for a while at around that age

still the idea of saying 'Greetings' Joey-style still makes me laugh as its just so stupid.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

did Bread really enforce the idea of dishonest/worshy Scousers tho? after all most of the family members were doing their best to make an honestish living.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 April 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I initially took this to be about the bread one would see in sitcoms that the actors made fake sandwiches from.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Carla Lane is shit w/ the possible exception of 'Butterflies'

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, I really want to hear your clever observations on the bread that actors made fake sandwiches from in 80s sitcoms.

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 20 April 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Bread was funnier than Butterflies, oh yes it was

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 April 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The theme tune was terrible. "Buh-buh-bread!"

Chriddof (Chriddof), Sunday, 20 April 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want to hear your clever observations

No you don't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes I do.

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 20 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The theme tune was terrible. "Buh-buh-bread!"

i always heard it as 'for the bread!'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 April 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It was fucking awful. End of story.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 21 April 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My job has recently brought me into uncommonly close contact with this show and it did confirm a few lingering impressions of the series, essentially that Vic McGuire (Jack) is the only one who understands the difference between TV comedy and panto, and that the third season is the 'best'.

I was struck for the first time though by horrid C*rla L*ne script mannerisms, like endless round-the-table accumulative repetition ("Jack was depressed because of xxx and Joey was depressed because of yyy and Aveline was depressed because of xxx AND yyy" [big laugh] or Adrian: "I can't do xxx because of yyy." Jack: "I can't do yyy because of xxx." Billy: "I don't even know what xxx is!" [screaming laughter]), some astonishingly poor support playing and just how much mileage was wrought from Grandad saying "piss off".

Interesting to note how many of the main cast seemed to be Mancunians clinging gamely to Scouse accents, while all the bit-part extras were genuine locals, instantly exposing the shoddy Wackisms of the stars as soon as they opened their mouths.

As a Merseysider who still lived in the area during the life of the show I don't recall people being particularly bothered by the scrounging, workshy stereotype (well, the letters page of The Daily Post was in uproar, but that doesn't count), but more by the grotesquely quirky daydreamer stereotype proffered alongside it. And the fact that it was another rubbish Liverpool sitcom, meaning, despite the 'legendary Scouse sense of humour', that Merseyside really ranks behind Surbiton, Wearside, Torquay and a Cumbrian prison.

The writer Carla Lne, a professional scouser who was also responsible for the Liver Birds and lots of other shite, got a kind of comeuppance on Brasseye I recall.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Carla Lane = #498 of Satan's Little Wizards.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

'Bread' was crummy.

The above is a pathetically lame attempt at humor which, had it appeared in a 'Bread' script, would still have improved it no end.

Fred Nerk, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Somehow I got throught the entire '80s living without seeing a single episode of Bread. Was it broadcast on the Holy Sabbath per chance?

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

two vague memories, which may be false:

their next door neighbour was played by rita tushingham

billy, the youngest brother with gelled, curly hair and large facial moles, had to be forcibly restrained from kicking his estranged wife's head in on many occasions, to riotous laughter from the audience.

True, in the last two series, I think.

billy, the youngest brother with gelled, curly hair and large facial moles, had to be forcibly restrained from kicking his estranged wife's head in on many occasions, to riotous laughter from the audience.

The Appalling Julie, played by the capable and near-sympathetic Caroline Milmoe in the first two seasons, was played by the simply awful H*lary Cr*wson later on, heightening the sense that they truly deserved each other and a suicide pact was the only solution.

The Little Known Fact About Bread that everyone actually knows is, of course, that Peter Howitt went on to write/direct Sliding Doors and Johnny English.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to like Caroline Milmoe in 'Hot Metal' (so-so ITV sitcom abt tabloid newspapers w/ Richard Wilson, written by David Renwick of 'Whoops! Apocalypse', 'One Foot in the Grave' and 'Jonathan Creek' 'fame'.)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I want's me pudding.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

at a time when all sitcoms were awful, "the liverbirds" probably seemed quite funny

(ps i wz like 12 so gimme a break)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(In Lane's defence, I think 'Butterflies' was really really good. NB: I probably have to watch it again to defend this.)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)
