Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 21 April 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

John Hurt as Jesus in History of the World, Part 1. Hands down.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 21 April 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a secularly-raised Jew, so not particularly qualified here, but I'll mention Jesus of Montreal.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 21 April 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the Happy Jesus statue in Dogma.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Guys. Christian Bale. Jesus. It's great.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Explain to me why you would have any interest at all in Christian Bale tied down to something wooden and stripped to the waist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, let's be serious now.

I just found out yesterday that Jesus had a brother? God does my knowledge lack.

allison, Monday, 21 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know that. Like, Fred Christ or something?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus of Montréal

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

He had a few brothers, but James is the one who's been in the news cause of the ossuary found inscribed with "James, brother of Jesus." The traditional explanation used by people who want him to be an only child, or want to preserve the idea of Mary's perpetual virginity, is that they were half-siblings (Joseph's brood from an earlier marriage) or cousins.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Tep. James, that's who I read about.

allison, Monday, 21 April 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I read about that. There was nothing to prove that he was anything to do with that Jesus - it doesn't seem to have been that rare a name. However, the U&K question is, do we call him Jimmy Christ?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, there was a thing on either Discovery Channel or History Channel -- both of them showed a lot of Christianity-related programs this weekend -- about the ossuary, and the "brother of Jesus" part seems to have been written later than the rest, so it's probably not genuine. Jesus, Joseph ("son of Joseph" was written on it, too, in the older part of the inscription), and James were common enough names that it'd be like finding an undated tombstone that said "Jamie, Daughter of Tony and Janet," and deciding you'd found Jamie Lee Curtis's grave. Which would be weird cause she's not dead.

James is an interesting figure, though, and I think it's either Crossan or Funk who hypothesized that in Jesus's lifetime, James -- who seems to have been well-connected in Jerusalem -- was the more famous of the two. But I have a fever right now, so don't quote me on that.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and the Christ part wouldn't work, but if he was a Zealot, we could call him Jay-Z.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Which would be weird cause she's not dead.

And neither is Jesus! Hallelujah!

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The one from Larry Cohen's God Told Me Too is really creepy.
