Sealand in ruins after blaze

A FORMER wartime fortress which is now a self-proclaimed independent state has been left devastated after a fierce blaze tore through the structure.

The so-called Principality of Sealand, seven miles off the coast of Felixstowe and Harwich, was evacuated at lunchtime yesterdayafter a generator caught fire.

Thames Coastguard, Harwich RNLI lifeboat, Felixstowe Coastguard rescue teams, firefighting tug Brightwell, the RAF rescue helicopter from Wattisham and 15 Suffolk based firefighters from the National Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG) were all called into action to tackle the blaze.

One man, believed to be a security guard, was airlifted from the scene and taken to Ipswich Hospital with smoke inhalation but no one else was on the Second World War gun emplacement.

Emergency services were first alerted to the drama just after midday when eyewitnesses noticed huge clouds of black smoke billowing out of the concrete structure, which is owned by self-styled King Roy Bates.

Notice to Mariners
NOTM 028/06 Exclusion zone declared

23 June 2006

The Bureau of Internal Affairs announces the creation of a 2-mile exclusion zone about the existing Fortress structure effective immediately. This is due to the need to ensure safety of shipping within Principality territorial waters following a fire in the generation facility at the Principality.

It is expected that an update to this NOTM will be available within the next 48 hours following evaluation of damage and risk assessment. Principality experts are assessing the incident at this time.

nice people, too. roy and joan, in particular, are a sweet old couple, and not at all crazy.

xp

gbx (skowly), Sunday, 25 June 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, so it's okay to open fire on anyone who gets too close, but when there's an emergency it's all tears and some poor bastards from England have to sort it out (with their own tax dollars too I assume).

Should've let them burn, those jerks.

S- (sgh), Monday, 26 June 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

FWIW I think they only opened fire at a group of people who tried to stage a takeover of the nation.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 26 June 2006 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

If you read up on the articles out there, the owners of Sealand really screwed over the data haven idea, no matter how sweet they are. Basically they didn't like the idea of no-strings data, refused to have agreements where they would really protect privacy, and slowly crowded out the dude who was doing the actual system work. Combine that with the fact that the bandwidth was extremely limited and that they pretty much "nationalized" the stuff it turned into a fiasco.

i know, i made a documentary about them (http://www.sealandfilm.com).

s: they didn't call the coast guard, a fisherman did. also, when they fired at people back in the late '60s, it was warning shots over the bow of a buoy tender. fired by prince regent michael, then 16, because the crew of the boat were leering at his topless sunbathing sister. i spoke with one of the crew at a bar in harwich about two years ago and he didn't seem too bent out of shape about it.

havenco was very much a fiasco, in part because sealand "nationalized" it and also because it wasn't much of an idea in the first place (ie - no legal legs to stand on).

gbx (skowly), Monday, 26 June 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed, didn't know that someone had made a film! Congratulations, I hope I get the chance to see it at some point.

still need to work out some kind of distribution deal with someone ANYONE, but it's tricky since neither myself nor my co-filmmaker are even remotely involved with the "industry." Film was made with an academic grant on a budget of under 10k. Turned out OK, tho!

gbx, email me in like a month

Ha ha, I wonder if it'll be advertised in Country Life next week, then. I'll keep an eye out.

a local kickball team asked the officials if they could be the national kickball team of sealand. i'm assuming nothing happened, but ha ha anyways.

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 12 January 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

i hope the pirate bay doesn't buy it. that will end in disaster and sadness for all.

ILX, DONATE NOW TO BUY SEALAND!

this is weird: i was trying to explain sealand to mrs F today, and we both agreed that it was an amazing story and someone should make a film of it. then i find this thread. gbx: keep us posted about what happens, won't you?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 13 January 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

oh hey guys.

the film is still available, though out of date, obviously. it really ought to be updated, given what's happened with sealand in the last year (the fire and now the sale).
